Hi Klei! I have a question about the Privacy policy.

In the privacy policy you say that you collect data automatically one of these data points being

"Gameplay data and you interactions with other players inside the service"

What kind of gameplay data and player interaction data do you collect?

Things like what people crafted or what mobs they fought. All the gameplay analytics events collected are fully visible in the lua source for DS/DST if anyone would like to confirm precisely what is sent.

As you might imagine there are times when being able to see whether a particular item is getting crafted or whether everyone is dying to a particular boss might be useful in tuning. While we don't use analytics to tune everything, when we do have questions we don't think players want to wait a month or two for us to hand-craft a query and release a client that investigates only that, collect the data, and then make the change.

We use a special analytics ID rather than your KU for extra safety. We're not interested in tracking people or selling your info or anything like that - we just want to make the best games possible and this is one of the tools we use to help us do that.

Happy to answer any further questions if anyone has them - we think our approach respects users' privacy while still letting us make quantitative decisions about our games, so we'd like to assuage any fears people have.

  • Beefalo Domestication, stats like tendency, domestication, obedience are recorded. These stats seem to be recorded every time the beefalo is fed, attacked, goes feral, has its domestication value changed, does an attack while a player is mounted and so on
  • Everytime a construction project has stuff added to it(Merm king tapestry, Pearl's House, Lunar Siphonator, Celestial Portal)
  • Everytime you feed a goodies food item to critters(Apparently that locks their "trait" so it cant change, Did you know that? Because I sure as hell didnt! By trait I mean when it says Scrappy as a prefix and what not for the critter, depending on what the player does)
  • Everytime a critter gets a new dominant trait
  • Everytime a player catches something with a fishing rod, stats like the thing caught, if it is actually a fish(or if its a wobster, flotsam), the weight(if it has weight), and the catch time
  • Everytime a player prototypes a new item (Ding ding ding! I'd guess this data was used for the design of the cookbook changes in some way)
  • Everytime you join a new server/game
  • Everytime a "MOTD" is clicked(Those boxes with info you find on the main screen, on stuff like the discord server, new events, new forum posts)
  • Everytime a quick join game fails (Y'know, like how Forge and Gorge had, not in the game anymore)
  • Everytime the server name filter is toggled on or off
  • User commands and votes(Like /kick, /ban, /regenerate and /rollback

And that's all I could seem to find.

Stuff like the world day is also recorded as a stat with each of these events.

i would like to know how much wilsons already died? many years ago we celebrated the 1.000.000 dead wilson, i wonder how much growth that number

Do you have any plans of releasing/presenting such statistics to the public? Stats excite everyone and fun facts like "A MILLION WILSONS KILLED" can be pretty hype. I'd relish it if the announcement posts [or even loading screen tips] Included tidbits like 4 656 367 344 Spiders were vanquished. The global goals like during forge season 2 like "Grand Forge Boarior killed 6426 times, reach 10 000 to unlock new item" were really great too, they reinforce a community feeling. I'd enjoy it so much if compendium had funky global stats and goals reminiscient of that.

And besides it'd be nice to have some official stats rather than rely on the only fanmade tool for keeping stats that tend to break every update and require the active maintenance of one fan.

Yeah, we don't do a lot of moderation (can you imagine how many @JoeWs we'd need if we did???) but we have to do some and this section is to cover that. The old "your right to swing your fist ends at someone else's face" thing.

As someone who does stats here at Klei I can appreciate this. :wilson_celebrate: 

I definitely need to be careful about promising anything there as those kinds of analysis can take a decent amount of time away from other work and I'm WAY MORE excited about what my team is working on at the moment. But maybe if you're all very good :wilson_angelic: Joe will let me reward you with a teaser graph or something.

I remember communicating with the author of this. We love this sort of thing, and I always do my best to help people making cool stuff in my spare time.

The server admins have your chat history. So if you're on a Klei Pubic server that's us, if you're on someone else's server then they're the ones with your chat logs.

I'm lazy and busy so there's a lot of caveats here.

- DS single player steam only (no DST, no other platforms)

- Only a few years (since we cut over to the new DB)

 

146,800,385. That's a whole lotta "survivors"!

And for a little extra fun, here's the top 100 causes of death. Modders will recognize that "NIL" means something special in DS. :) That's a whopping 18,177,417 all by itself!

How many of these do you think you contributed? Somewhere in here is the first DST playtest where I got stuck on a peninsula full of nothing but bees and Jamie had to come save me, but I died trying to make a torch. :) (In those days DST was still reporting itself as DS).
