The game desperately needs more options to counter wildfires

Recommended Posts

I first considered opening this in suggestions boards but this is not a single suggestion, more like a meta discussion.

The game forces you to base in oasis or do ugly looking tricks with lureplants and flingos. Theres also the option to fish for worlds with ponds to strategically place big trees but it takes a very long time to find such a generation.

On top of that, flingos not only make the base ugly, they are a pain to fuel over and over.

Some suggestions i have are:

Drastically increase the tank of flingos so you can fuel them once per summer (i expected this in qol update).

Allow flingos to be disguised into other structures using the dust thing or some other way.

Allow for mooncaller staff to stop wildfires. This would make sense because it lowers temperature and things catch fire because they get too hot. This would also solve the abundance of mooncaller staves in the endgame.

Most important one: ALLOW FOR FIREPROOF SIGNS. Using scaled chests is a great way to use unpotected space but you cant set up your storage like that because signs burn. Either allow for some treatment on signs (goop or sonething rare) or allow moonstone signs or thulecite or something THAT DOES NOT BURN.

I hope others add some suggestions but please fix the summer headache.

Wouldn't it be a better game mechanic to add craftable leg-extenders for Tallbirds so that they would reach the sky and you could feed them asparagus and they would wee wee all over your base during the summer? Seriously, all the summer hate threads are getting old, plus none of the suggestions that keep getting presented sound neither interesting nor very fun.

I don’t think people understand that summer in the game is SUPPOSED to feel Miserable, even in Solo DS Summer had its own boss (Dragonfly) who now sits stationary in a Biome so people can build walls to exploit her fight.

Summer isn’t supposed to be fun in the sun when it comes to DST.. you are watching it get so hot that Rabbits Spontaneously combust into flames.. keep that in Mind.

Flingo-Matics suck… Klei should update the game so Endothermic Fires (when fully fueled) prevent things in their radius from going up in a blazing inferno. It makes sense that a fire designed for extreme cold would keep the area around it cold I have no idea why we even needed iceflingo or spittle fish pump.. Endo-fires should work just fine.

But summer as a season is just plain boring.. and it could use some new stuff.

Maybe lowering the cost of flingos, because two gears is expensive, and i'm a megabaser, so... It's annoying to build a metric ton of those things or move to the oasis and do nothing for 20 days

It's less about ways to counter them, it's more about them appearing out of your field of vision. I'll extinguish any starting fire with my bare hands, water can, ice staff, balloon, or luxury feather, unless it started after I already left the base. Or any other spot of interest, like my beloved lureplant farm that can no longer be planted as densely.

Gears are not an issue in long term worlds, the issue is that even in a 1k days world where you have stacks of everything snd access to everything you still have your hands tied behind your back when it comes to basing.

Or you could just base near water, or in a bridge between two biomes that always has a small gap with much land between. I feel like the tree, watering can, or heck, even the ice staff are all very good ways to combat smoldering, if you don't turn it off.

Can we talk about how much Water Balloons on Xbox Series X suck? I crafted these things the other day (just because it’s an item I’ve never crafted and wanted to finally see what it does) they are awful and I absolutely HATE them.

The distance of how far you can throw them is shorter then Wortox can Soul Hop Or the player can cast a fishing rod.

Both of those on an Console controller EQUALLY SUCK.

I feel like Klei designs a good bit of this game with KB+Mouse in mind first and controllers as an Afterthought. But that really is a SHAME because there are Other games that consider controller input better.

Take for example Water Balloons or Fishing Rod Casting, those are locked at a pre-Determined distance and you need to position your character JUST RIGHT for where the reticule is over what your intending to hit- Klei… I love you guys with all my heart, but this is beyond stupid.

I feel like I should be able to hold the throw/cast button down to adjust the distance at which I will throw the Balloon/Cast the Rod.

Because of how highly inefficient water balloons are with a controller I have now just resorted to Watering Can- I would rather burn myself alive in a fire getting close enough to put it out then to play “try to match the locked on the ground circle up with whatever you want to aim at”

This wouldn’t be a problem if I had at least SOME control over how far/close I cast/throw.

Please go play Mario Party 1-6… Thats how casting on a console controller should work.

And I am quite baffled as to why it remains to be headache inducing in DST when it shouldn’t have to be- And begging for KB & Mouse Support BECAUSE the way it works on a console controller shouldn’t be the only answer.

You said you hired a team specifically just for improving the console versions of the game- Put that team to use..

If Water Balloons are meant to be a valid way to counter wildfires… then Make them suck a whole lot less…

Thank You.:wickerbottomthanks:

Fortunately for us, Klei has a bunch of professional developers on hand. They came up with a much better farming system than anyone could suggest, I'm sure they can do the same with summer.

You need to stop thinking with ponds and start thinking with rivers.

(But yeah Wildfires need to die in a fire. See how they like that.)

Thats a lot of prestihatinators... Can I see what that looks like upclose?

Rivers force you to develop in a line or a couple of lines and its very annoying to hop boats.

Lakes or islands you can surround with trees allow for a base that you can use as usual. Or supplement with one flingo and get a big area

As a matter of fact i would totally do ocean bases or megabases if they would provide a way to upgrade boats to platforms that would take up 4 tiles and can be interconnected so that you walk on them as you would on land.

There are other games like Raft i think where the boat is organically extended by platforms.

In my view this would be a great option to counter summer.

Really? Ever heard about ice staff, watering can, water balloons and tons of other stuff that can extinguish or prevent fires? Its allways easier to disable it in the menu rather than actually paying attention to the game (the smoldering and actual fire). You can also make a base under canopy of knobbly trees or if you are that bad in DST, go visit caves during summer. What will be next... keeping belly full is annoying, so let´s remove hunger?

If there's one thing I've learned from all these wildfire theads, it is that certain people's ability to draw absolutely nonsensical analogies between the railroading tedium of wildfires and mechanics that are actually challenging, but fair will never cease to amaze me.

I would rather want the game to let me know when a wildfire happens more clearly.

Maybe a character quote saying something is burning?

Only allow smoldering to happen on screen, not off screen?

I have seen someone on the forum suggest that a form of heat wave would happen, signaling something is about to smolder in your vicinity, and you have to find it before it burns.

There are quite a few ways to counter them, Ice Flingo, Water Can, Ice Staff, Water Balloon, Luxury Fan, Klaus' Ice Deer (xd), just that they can happen without you noticing, and you can't save things that are burnt to crisp.

We have lots of tools to fight wildfire. Only trouble is that it can happend very quiet/off-screen, away from player attention and burn not renewable resources in world where only option to renew them are either cheats, mods, rollback and regen of the world. Cawnival could have option to supply some of these items (like bushes), like winter feast has a chance to give panflute (and possibly something else but I dont remember it). Maybe a fire alarm could be a another solution?

absolutly, sometimes you cant even hear the smouldering noise until is late. I like the quote idea, for me was always helpful that mechanic

this should be a thing too, or atleast make us know that there is fire happening near
