What happened to Billy and Mumsy?

After the completion of Gorge Mumsy said she and Billy would follow us through the portal

But they never did so what exactly happened to them and can we see them as potential npc in the future like pearl?

They got the same treatment as Warbucks, it’s a thing that existed once.. but Klei denies ever happened now.

If I remember correctly, when examining the Mumsy tree ornament during Winter's Feast, Walter will specifically mention that he wonders where they went. 
So the canon answer is that they simply vanished.

I belive Ancient Gateway's story have been cut short by budget issues, and we skip a few things straight to Return of Them. Maybe one day Klei will come back and show us what happened after Gorge event.

Klei abandoned the gateway arc.

Which is really disappointing and also a shame considering that they could've easily tied Gorge's end with RoT's beginning.

It does sorta feel like the Portal arc was cut short, doesn't it? I don't know if it was, but It just kinda ended and we never saw them.
I do hope we get to see them eventually, I loved them a lot!

The way I see it is forge and gorge really happened, it's just that charlie sabotaged the next portal to bring the crew back to the default land

Maybe they were too slow and the portal closed on them after the survivors jumped through?

We see the portal closing during the forge trailer, so it's not like it's open forever after someone goes through.

Billy & Mumsy realized that the survivors would get hungry eventually and eat them some day, so they gave them the instructions on how to make the cookbook to create a diversion so that they could cancel their plans to follow behind.

I like to pretend Billy and Mumsy did the secret 3rd sanity event and caused the events of RoT to begin. I mean, surely something must have caused that piece of the moon to fall!

 I think its fair to say that they arent done with it, they just focused their efforts on other things (such as RoT) for the time being and while I love the events, actual content updates felt due

I mean- they also abandoned lunar horror mobs after only creating two of them, they then abruptly ended return of them content updates, and from what I have heard, Hamlet is a unfinished dlc expansion that was made “Just for Funsies”

Klei doesn’t have a great track record with NOT Abandoning content/ideas.

But if they get the entire character cast reworked (without also abandoning that) you can color me as delightfully surprised.

Would be great if they returned as playable characters.

Imagine a duo character that forced you to care for two stat bars or shared stats (if both get hit its double damage). Then if either character dies, they both die or it results in a very heavy penalty.

Billy can copy what ever action Mumsy does, resulting in double chopping (provided you give him an axe), double grass gathering, double rowing (if you give him an oar), etc.

Yes their names don't starve with a W but I think we can make an exception. Would be a very cute pair and a new mechanic to explore. Wendy/Maxwell/Willow is more of a summoned pet, its like rosalina and luma vs ice climbers.
