-Variant
And so, they kept coming. Hi all, good morning/night. I've been absolutely loving the new farming, it's such an incredible breath of fresh air and probably one of my favorite updates in a long while, though I can't help but feel like it might be lacking a bit in the threat category. The Lord of the Fruit Flies (My favorite reference in this game to date.) is an awesome encounter but I feel like even as a threat he's lacking a bit, tending to your crops again isn't the hardest and as far I recall there's a want for weeds in some cases. While the balancing could be changed up I did want to present potential new threats, I won't get heavily into how they'd spawn and what all they'd really do as to leave wiggle room, however. Food for thought. Rats and Crows come to mind, I saw crows landing in my farm plots last night thinking they were up to something no-good but eventually found out they were harmless. I feel like this has potential! It'd be a nice use for the scarecrow at that, tying them back in to their real life counterpart. Rats were one of the oldest concepts for DS ever... Older than Wilson's current design, actually. I think this is as good a time as ever to give them another shot. Spoiler Rats are something I'd love to see in base game, they've been around for eons and I think they've got a good shot here. Thoughts on the matter? ADM
Maybe exclusively crows for the surface, rats in caves... Carrats on the Moon Island... wait, no, it's cannibalism ! At least the crops won't be safe anywhere, unless you make a proper secure field. But integrating threads without a nice feature behind isn't super fun so on a counterpart, we could imagine they fertilize the soil on their way, cause they uh... make a lot of . And yeah I liked the idea of integrating Scarecrows to the agriculture structures just like @Nickolai mentioned. Now I'm not sure of what the rats could be afraid of, maybe just actual mobs in general, I'd like to have a Rock Lobster or Bunnyman defending my crops against that sort of nuisances. Brubs
That's actually a very neat idea and an opportunity to make the Friendly Scarecrow more relevant in the game! Mike23Ua
I don’t think farms should be a get out of starvation free card, I would love it if crows, rats, rabbits and even Carrats or Pigmen/Bunnymen tried to eat your crops. Forcing players to have to tend to and guard their food source just as you would should an Angry Bearger decide it’s hungry & wants to spawn. Having all these mobs trying to get into and eat your crops would be more realistic to actual farmers having to keep foxes, (which Hamlet actually has its own variation of called Pog) Crows, Rabbits, and other pests out of. This would be a good reason for players to set up friendly scarecrows to frighten away crows and could maybe even be extend so much deeper if Klei wanted to dive into that concept. Bird Up
It would be nice if scarecrow were added to the farm mechanics some how. it could scare off pests like the crows and fruit fly Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/124191-crowsnrats/#findComment-1399009 Share on other sites
Zeklo
It really comes down to the specifics for me. Thematically it sounds awesome, but I don't want to bloat farming with an array of crazy threats. I suppose it could be like % chance that one threat is picked over the other, but that's a bit basic. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/124191-crowsnrats/#findComment-1399053 Share on other sites

UnknowX
Maybe lord of the fruit flies and it's minions could be pests for spring and summer, and Klei could add a new craft "pesticide" to avoid them from spawning at all. And in autumn and winter we could have rats. They could try to steal food items on crops, drying racks and food items in chests. There could be rat trap items to deal with them. Monkey Cups
An interesting idea, though probably not a popular one given half the complaints I've seen about the new farming is people not wanting to be tethered to the base. Adding things that eat your crops would encourage people to camp out on the farm all day.
