The image setup indicates that it was probably an item which would drop...implying that a player would have to slot it in to open the portal, ie end the match. My guess is that they decided against that because the last thing you want in a 6 player gamemode that's of a high energy in-and-out-of-matches-quickly style that promotes the use of public auto-matching...is a single item that some jerk can use to freeze everyone's win right when they beat the final boss. ...also, inventory storage/use may have been an issue given how Forge inventory works.
