How would you get water here?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious to see how others would approach this problem. This is my map as it currently stands (Cycle 53, accepting every dupe, fatalistic/miserable):

I have plentiful food and heat's no problem, but I'm completely out of water and have just gone below 3000 kg algae. I can continue to survive on algae for few more turns, but the map is the dryest I've ever seen and I need to find another source of water/oxygen before it runs out completely.

How would you approach this? Keep digging for steam geysers and hope I get lucky? Try and pipe water from that pool to the east (it's the only one I can reach without a slimelung outbreak)? Or just dig out a pile of clean ice and carry it into the base? There's lots of options, I'm just having trouble deciding which one to commit to.

For me I would go for the polluted water on top and convert it to water with a seive, Pray I find a steam or water geyser, and then go with that. If not I would use as much of the natural gas as i could to make polluted water.

I would also cut the bristle blossoms and try to live on mushrooms, blossoms are suicidal if you have a lack of water if you ask me.

The problem with that is that I'm playing with miserable immune systems and only have 2 exosuits at the moment, so I have to be careful where I tread lest slimelung takes the entire colony.

I've already started burning the natural gas, though. I do need another generator if I'm planning to make a dent in it.

I really like the circular design you’ve got going on.

Anyways what I think would be a good idea is to start digging up as much non ice materials out of your ice biome and then start pumping hot water (polluted water works too) on top of the ice. The resulting water can then be used for whatever you wish.

First and foremost check that bricked over geyser in the swamp just to the right of that vacillator on the right side.

Aside from that, I don't really see an option if you don't start turning every last puff of NatGas into P-H2O pronto.  You have to buy time while you first explore for, then harness some sort of water source.

My immediate solution would be to tap the polluted water lakes to the east using your exosuits. Get a pump and power there with a minimum of digging and start sieving that to deal with the immediate problem and buy time. I would probably try to melt the ice biome without digging up the ice (50% mass loss and water is scarce) afterwards to buy more time. With that time you could get some more exosuits built and try to explore for the geysers you need to sustain yourself as long as possible, or at least dig your way to the remaining polluted water lakes and set up pumps there in case you're unlucky.

Also, I can't quite tell from the picture but are you growing bristleblossoms without using a farm station? If so, you could halve your water usage for your bristleblossoms by starting to use that.

QQ. Why did you run out of water where did you use it?

Mostly research. The seed had barely any water to begin with.

You made quite a mess of that natural gas.

Yup. I'm usually a bit more careful about gases like that, but after one or two tiles got in I just stopped caring.

I'll filter it all out once the place is semi-sustainable.

Hey, that's a good idea. While the biome is still cold it could even be a good way to kill off the food poisoning germs in my sewage water by freezing it to ice.

I do yeah.

You can live off uncooked mealwood. Eventually you will need dusk caps too. I love the circular design. Though I imagine will Be hard to fit over 50 dups.

A) kill the bristle blossoms (60kg/dupe/cycle)

B) tap your eastern pW lake to sieve/electrolyzer.

C) setup a fertiliser synth/farm station/ngas generator

D) search for geyser before tapping into melting Ice.. sleet wheat are nice emergency food

I'm on My current playthrough accepting every dupe (not miserable) at cycle 152, working on oil & Magma to water for the last 2 weeks.

This. Imagine if it's a cool slush geyser? Can't you find a way to there without breaking slime? I can't really see on the picture but it seems you'll only have to dig few slime blocks before reaching it.

I do like the base design, but I just don't see how you could have used up that much water (or really even gotten that much dug out) in only 53 cycles.

Even given a dry map seed, that just seems like an accomplishment in resource usage.  By cycle 53, I'm normally only just starting to run a bit low on

the lakes in the starter biome and haven't even started tapping into PW pools or geysers.

See for yourself: the world seed is 99. This is how much water you get in that seed.

The bottom puddle is the one I'm feeding my berries from. The top two went to research, water basins, and a small amount went to fried mush during a brief famine when I couldn't keep up with how many dupes I was taking.

As for getting that much dug out, that's the advantage of taking all comers. Starting out with a +5 miner and setting her priorities appropriately helps too.

I would spam ice sculptures. 400kg ice melting into water wherever you like. Takes around 1 cycle for a sculpture to melt, thats by far the quickest solution.

This was exactly the approach I ended up taking while I built the infrastructure to start pumping from the east lake.

So now I have a water sieve and a trickle of clean water flowing back into the reservoir. Unfortunately, I had to suffer a cycle or two of non-functional wash basins, so all my food is poisoned now. I might try transferring it to a chlorine pocket and back.

Also, I found a cool steam geyser to the south west! ... and it's dormant, because of course it is.
