Anyone layout their base in advance?

They satisfy the wash station requirement for latrines, remove germs, and remove a host of germs.  How is that useless?

The fact a player would even have a germ host in the first place demonstrates a pretty severe lapse in base design.

And you are getting all of this at the (fairly extreme) cost of Dupe time.

So while they are not useless, they aren't really useful either.

since when did they remove host germs?

My bases are germ free long before I get showers installed so I can't confirm this, but the database says "Showers remove the "Grimy" effect and kill all germs present on Duplicant's skin."

Ok I did a quick test and made a latrine with 2 lavatories and 3 showers

When Liam who had some slimelung host germs used the lavatory he walked past the showers and didn't wash off the food poisoning germs he had on his skin

How is this useful?

"host germs" are germs inside the dupes body and can't be killed except by the dupe's own immune system

I do something similar at each new game, but with a different organization style. I build all rooms around a central shaft, with enough space for a ladder, firepole, and two ledges for air circulation vertically.

Each expansion always branches off this 4-wide shaft, and without expanding outside the starting biome, there is always enough room for 1-2 farms, 2-3 barracks, 1-2 mess halls, 1-2 latrines, 2-3 ranches, the main cool water reservoir, and other misc rooms.

I ALWAYS place my power generation, oxygen generation, liquid/gas processing, and refineries well outside the base, typically at least one abyssalite layer away.

Here's a screecap of my typical setup, from border to border of what I consider my "home base", with temperature controlled air, exosuit only exits, and still plenty of room for expansion, all still within the starting biome.

I do not see the point, It is much more efficient to adapt to each map. In addition, I really do not like to store rubbish in starting location. Bringing hot material into starting location unnecessary cause overheating. It is better to live them out and limit what you have inside.

The point of having a planned layout is it significantly reduces travel time for dupes between food, toilets, sleep, and storage. If all material is stored in the home base, there is FAR less travel time involved in moving between where the material was dug up and where it is needed. As for hot material, a single ice sculpture can cool 20 full storages of moderately hot material to comfortable temperatures, so long as it isn't volcano material.

When you have a plan, you can optimize space and have much more efficient duplicants, less oxygen needed for wasted space, and much easier control over disease from entrances with hand sanitizers and checkpoints.

This is how I usually plan my setup.  All rooms are 16x4 to get the max 64 tiles for rec room, latrine, med bay, and barracks.  Usually I only build one barracks room first as I can fit 8 cots in one then once I get plastic start building the other 5 rooms for a max of 18 dupes.  I like to keep the base air tight surrounded by insulator tiles

16x4 size is a good idea. I might try that instead of 12x4 (10x4 with walls) next game.

12x4 has something I like though. 2 12x4 rooms side by side with a ladder between and two empty tiles makes a 100 square room. Just subtract 4 and you get a size 96.

I probably did not describe that very well!

BTW, does that water at the bottom keep the base cool?
