I Think New Characters Would Help DST

Recommended Posts

I look at Rainbow Six Siege: Operation White Noise and I realise how much Klei would benefit from having new characters.

At the moment, I just don't have any reason for returning to DST... but if there were new characters I'd come back in an instant. That's what Rainbow is doing.

I think that's why Rainbow Six Siege is so successful and continues to have such a huge player base so long after its release. They continue to release new characters, offering a new way of experiencing the game each time. Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in! It's almost like it makes the game new again every time.

And in terms of why Klei should do this (as in why it would be profitable), apart from sustaining the player base (which, I don't know about you guys, but for the last year servers have felt a bit dead): new characters would mean new skins, as well as new toys and merch.

That's just my take on it. I'm not a professional in this matter. I just thought it would be useful to show, as a consumer, why I'm returning to a multiplayer game like Rainbow and not DST.

And also, after the whole Winona disaster, I really need something to make up for that hype crash.

We literally just got a new character.

Short answer: Yeah, but not a good one though.

Long answer: I don't want to turn this into a Winona rant. There's enough posts already about how much people were disappointed with her.

However, t he reason Winona doesn't apply is because of this...

"offering a new way of experiencing the game each time"

Unlike the new characters from Rainbow, which bring a new mechanic to the game that makes us play differently, the new character from DST doesn't. All she does is offer small, arguably insignificant, conveniences: she can last a little longer at night without a torch and can craft things a little  faster. Emphasis on little.

In other words, the play stile between Winona and, let's say, Wilson are barely indistinguishable.

Whereas in Rainbow, playing a new character is like playing a new game. They each have their unique mechanics and play style, which is what previous characters from Don't Starve did very successfully...Until Winona of course.

And I worry, that the way that the community reacted so badly to her will put Klei off from making new characters. That's why I made this post.

my guy youre saying we need new characters but winonas a new character.

and sure you make the point that she brings nothing new to the table but simply put it, that's not true.

her faster crafting, while unnoticable at first, makes megabases so much faster to make.

duct tape literally replaces sewing kits for her, providing a way to manage clothing without the need for hound teeth. plus in my opinion the tape is better, as you have 40 charges with a max stack over 5 with a sewing kit.

I understand your point, but I still think these still amount to nothing more than very small conveniences.

While the duck tape is better and faster crafting can be useful...Is it really worth picking that over books that create tentacles or a character that can get a buff from lightning?

Yes, you can argue that it's useful for megabases, but I would argue it's more useful for those purposes to have a character with more health (more health means better at battles, means quicker access  to vital resources). I mean does the time you save crafting in a week (in game time) with Winona amount to more time that you would save  by tanking mobs with Wolfgang?

And it's not just about perks, it's about disadvantages as well...The challenges they provide is part of the fun of it. Winona doesn't have this and therefore she's not interesting to play at all.

Yes! More characters so we can get angry for it not meeting our expectations!

More 24 page threads about character balance!

Yes!

There's other games that meet the community's expectations (Rainbow for example), why can't Klei do the same?

The problem with this idea; "Oh, the new character was boring, the solution is MORE NEW CHARACTERS!". See how this might not go so well? Quality >> Quantity, in any case.

I'd rather get buffs to existing character than another new character, right now. Especially Winona, who's newness makes it feel more likely to maybe happen.

I agree with you, problem is it's been 3 year since DST's release and Willow and Woody still haven't been fixed, the later of which is unplayable.

With Winona it will probably be the same, so instead of asking for something that will never change, I feel like we should move on...

honestly 12 playable characters is not a big number for multiplayer game for 6 (or more) people. We obviously need more

Sure, new characters (like all new content) are welcomed.. in a way; or more. Depends. Mainly about purpose and balance.

But realistically speaking, as Klei stated already their plans for a couple of Forge-like future events that would introduce new mechanics and further the lore, new characters would be a low probability - more so even after how Winona was received (I for one still wish for an introductory video about her and her role in The Constant).

As for this thread I do really hope "more 24 pages about character balance" won't be the thing in here as well; is really annoying and without actual scope. Cheers!

But here's the thing, while new content is always welcomed...I think new characters are more helpful in terms of keeping the community alive, because let's be honest... How many players actually defeated the Fuelweaver...Or have even seen him, or even know about him?

That's not to say, we shouldn't be grateful that Klei hasn't forgotten about the hardcore players, but the truth is...Most players don't actually interact with this content because most of the stuff that DST has added are optional raid bosses, with ridiculous amount of health, that can only be killed with either well co-ordinated teams or incredible solo pros/masters, neither of which apply to the average player.

Winona is better in many aspects, but that's wrong topic

No she isn't.

avoiding charlie is borderline useless.

and so are her repair kits.

Double craft speed is barely of any use, and so is wilsons beard.

lol.. dude there are very cool mods in the workshop

I recomend mods by Neutral, Fidooop, Default, CheeseNuggets, Jasper and rezecib

They all care about their mods updating regularily and all of them have vanilla looking art style and feel.

Unfortunately custom character mods are a great way to tell people to not join your server.
