Something in the Dark

Recommended Posts

So a while ago, my friend and I were playing on a Klei server and we were in the caves. We joined near the end of summer, and decided to duck down into the caves to wait the last few days out. I've been down there plenty of times before, but this time something was different. I was being Woodie (as usual), he was being either Wilson or Maxwell (I can't quite remember) and we heard something. It sounded BIG. Normally, I'd assume it was just something that I hadn't heard before. Like some kind of ambiance that was in DST but not DS. But then our characters said things. Woodie said "Oh geez. I hope you're ready 'Luc". I can't remember what my friend's character said. My point is that there was something down there to cause it. Our characters even had special dialogue, like when the giants show up. It sounded kind of like breathing, and it kept on getting closer. We decided to stay and see what it was, and it kept getting closer, and closer. But right as it reached the loudest point yet . . . it quit. Just like that. No sign of what caused it or why it quit. We both just kind of shrugged after waiting a while, and went back above ground. I have no idea what this was. However, after seeing the silhouette picture of the giant toadstool thingy, I wanted to ask: has anyone else experienced this? If so, even if you have seen the cause, please don't say what it is. When I first began playing DS, I didn't look anything up. I discovered it all by myself, and it was the most fun I have ever had in a video game in my entire life.

So, if you have heard something in the dark, please say so, and simply leave it at that. There are mysteries in Don't Starve. Beautiful, deadly mysteries, and I want to discover each and every one. If I can do so myself, rather than have the mysterious unknown be spoiled for me, then I will be all the happier.

Yes you heard something. I know what you heard.

I'll add some not-very-spoilery hints in a spoiler tag if I can figure out how to use one.

EDIT 2: Got it. A couple of hints below, ignore if you please! I don't directly say anything. Anything majorly relevant is censored.

Spoiler

I do believe you heard the coming of a [REDACTED] or two. [REDACTED] exist in both DST and single player DS (Well... maybe only RoG? I don't really play any single player runs without RoG on so I don't know if that changes anything).

I like living in caves, so I'm used to [REDACTED]. They're basically just the cave version of [REDACTED]. There are glaring differences, but the spawning is similar enough to draw the parallel.

You'll know what all the [REDACTED]s are about after you learn a bit. Just make a cave base and legit live down there for a while. And get your logsuits ready. You'll need them while you learn to fight. Dead serious.

Regarding Tanking (again, no major spoilers. Just adding on to the above poster):

Spoiler

Definitely don't tank. But until you know what you're doing, don't think you can survive without getting hit, and getting hit HARD. Even when you know the drill, accidents happen and can very, very easily be fatal. Prepare to be hit by a truck.

Oh. Just remembered another method of dealing with [REDACTED]s that I haven't used but worth a shot: the [REDACTED]! Unlike the previous mentioned method, meaning getting a [REDACTED], that involves sometimes a ton of luck, this method it's a bit of time consuming and requires some hard work to get all [REDACTED] required for like 5-6 [REDACTED], but the rest of the ingredients shouldn't be a problem as are in abundance anyway. After you dealt with [REDACTED]s you can pick the [REDACTED] and rebuild the [REDACTED] back for another use later on.

I often use first method, meaning a [REDACTED], to get [REDACTED] from [REDACTED]s as they are considered a [REDACTED] and are attacked right away. :)

PS: Thanks for the laugh @AlternateMew And hope i didn't spoil anything. :)

The toadstool was made to be a caves-giant... so this might be just a taste of what's coming... stay tuned...

Was this confirmed? Last I checked that was the popular theory, but just speculation AFAIK. Was it confirmed on a stream or something?

Well, thank you all for being able to tell me that I'm not crazy, yet still not spoiling it for me :p   Now I'll have to go back down and search for whatever the heck is lurking down there. I just hope it's not a giant bunnyman. I hate those things . . .

I'm not sure to think if this is a mystery story or a new thing .

Spoiler

Because there is something in the caves ... that acts like hounds and comes toward you (sometimes you can skip them if they spawn on the other side of the abyss near you) and you might just missed them .

But It's fair to point out -

I have heard some strange hmm breathing down there (or at least a sound like it) But never found the source . It was at one place not coming near me or going away ... Like a big monster . It was getting louder if I was going in one direction . It was just the sound without anything and could not find it . I noticed it a long long long time ago and though it just a bug . (there was no dialog of my or other characters)

A similar thing has happened to me, everytime i'm in a desert, i hear a weird noise, it's like an acordeon or something, it's completely random, i've been hearing this since the game was in beta, never knew what it was.

Those would be Tumbleweeds.

I'd point out that @TheTraditionalGentleman notes this happened a while ago, and if there's hints towards the thing in the current update silhouette in the game, I doubt they've been there for very long. Also checked the scripts for quotes, and the quote they mention is specifically for [REDACTED]. As for why they didn't bump into [REDACTED], [REDACTED] probably either spawned in the abyss (yes, they still do this sometimes) or got distracted by something else.
