Your first challenge: Survive the Lag O__O

ok i'll try, its realy hard to survive especially if you join in the middle of the game and its winter season xD

Heh.  That was pretty much MY first challenge in this game...(the lag part, I mean.)

As for the original post...basically everything Arlesienne and PanAzej said.  That's what I meant, but they worded it better.  An overpowerful character would not only ruin it for the other people, but if you were allowed any mod in general...well, some of them don't work well with other mods, and would crash things. I also agree with Arlesienne on wanting balanced and lore-friendly mods. That means, stuff that fits the tone and style of the game as it was originally made.

The only modded character I have on my server is Winnie, who is (a) based off of existing Klei character art and (b) written and programmed in such a way that she fits into the game.  In fact, I played through a session's worth as her myself first to make sure it worked before I decided to allow it in the game.  (If anything, she's a bit HARDER to play than some others...she's a strict vegetarian, and that can get really difficult in the winter.)  I also figured we could use another girl character.  : )

And yeah, really the solution is to make your own server and put whatever mods you want on that.  I mean, maybe play on some public ones and make some friends first, so you have somebody who would show up on your server once you get it going.  I myself have made ALL my Steam friends on DST.  It happens almost every single time I join a public server, including my first time playing ever--we have a lot of adventures, we talk to each other, we build a base together, fight hounds, etc. and then afterwards or during, somebody is like "Can I add you on Steam?"  Pretty much every time.

All it takes, really, is being a cooperative player.  I have...I forget how many, but a bunch of Steam friends by now.  They're from all over the world and keep all different hours, so it's hard to get very many of them together at once.  But there's usually SOMEbody up and willing to play with me on my server.

Yes, it is. Just wait for an hour and the server should reset. >90% of the players don't survive winter and with only 10% left, resetting the server becomes very likely.

You can use Willow and burn trees to survive while gathering items to make a Science Machine to make a pair of Earmuffs. After that it gets a bit easier.

People look at how well you're doing and stuff, if you're good at survival some might consider playing with you/adding on Steam ;P

I don't talk that much while playing, unless I want to leave soon and need to leave my items on somebody... Or I've found somebody worth playing with. Then I talk :V

uhh lol that's not what I see.

I'm sorry, but I cannot help but disagree. Just how can you have an opinion of someone, that strong to add, if the only discussion you have ever joined in here is this thread? The comment on @Cheerio's example of equippables doesn't count for obvious reasons. I would rather you refrained from such strong statements, especially since @CaptainChaotica has a reason to feel offended now.

well I would love to join your servers guys :)  and make friends there instead xD

Then you should check the announcements of people looking for other players here: http://forums.kleientertainment.com/forum/80-dont-starve-together-server-bulletin/ or here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/322330/discussions/3/

Well, I won't speak for @PanAzej, but I don't think I worded it better. Your point was perfectly understandable, to be honest, though I understand it's a subjective matter. Generally, I just believe I, as the host who shares their machine so that others, usually with an inferior bandwidth and specs, can play an enjoyable game, deserve as little as control over what mods are used.

Indeed. Installing mods, now, with Steam Workshop, is in 99% cases just a matter of hitting that big SUBSCRIBE button and then enabling them as the host. And people will come.

Bear in mind though that - from my experiences at least - servers with anime and/or overwpowered characters from mass culture tend to attract griefers; I recall a time when my regular asked to try out some... what's the name... Annie? I don't know, the lass had a creepy bear and even creepier set of pink clothes. With frills. Tough stuff. We quickly had to undo the change as the server was flooded with Annies killing anyone through those bear zombies. My regular was the first to apologise and suggest removing the mod. The same happened when another regular wanted to see exactly what this Saitama guy can do. Lenny spent about ten minutes in the game, nuking everything in sight (including chester ), then stated it's boring. And boring, it is. The whole point of using my friend's mod is the fact Cougher's a fragile speedster, with stats worse than the ones Wes has, and on top of that, a complete lack of protection against rain, cold and heat (he takes much more damage from bad weather, and quicker). I love Willow, and WX, and Wes, out of the vanilla options, but they no longer offer enough of a challenge now.

Yes, you can use @star's Disable Characters Mod (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=522365312), but the fact you need to configure it with KU IDs and prefab names of each character, for every person you want capable of using the restricted character, every time his mod is updated... well, I'm too old for this. It's an awesome mod, but not too easy of a solution.

Is it still so bad since I switched them to the amazon C4 instances? Shouldn't be, there's _so much_ spare CPU right now. Well, shouldn't be any lag other than the latency your internet connection adds....

Also, on topic, there are technical reasons why character mods are server restricted. You could, for example, write a character mod that instantly deletes everything in the world when it joins. Probably for the best if the server admin has to manually enable that one. :p

Ye gods hath speaketh :wesballoonbonanza:!

Okay. I'm glad I just got here now that the waters have calmed. Think of it like this. If you allow Client mods to allow Charcter mods this will disregard the only possible way to prevent any sort of cheating. If your Admin, kicking people only goes so far. Hell. Everyone in your server could be "Cool Op Guy V.69" with no model and just 1000 stats each. Point is simple. This idea shouldn't go into effect. Ever. Everrrrrrrrrrrrr. If you wanna play specific characters on a server, host or ask your friends.

Have a good one and try not to starve.

Another sensible post.
