BluesyBuesy
I really wish people wouldn't be so hostile to new players. We should be ambassadors for the game, bringing new people in with open arms. This is an indie game that will fizzle out if we're exclusive, tribalistic assholes to anyone who tries to join us. And if you really can't stand newbies that much, then just play on a private server. True, but attacking newbies who are not prepped is not only lame but could really further one's distaste for the game, don't you think? Better to fight when they are actually somewhat prepped for the fight; then it's also much more fun Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/68635-an-appeal-to-noobs/page/2/#findComment-790791 Share on other sites

Viru
Everyone starts out as a noob. When I first started playing DST (got beta keys) I was constantly dying to stupid things I did like eating raw red shrooms constantly. People helped me out here and there with giving me flint and twigs to build my axe, told me how to use the crockpot, general advice, and just being nice in general despite me leaving a trail of skeletons everywhere. I learned the basics eventually from people being nice to newbies, not from hostile people. Yes they're sometimes a pain in the ass or a prick, but hey we're all noobs at heart who did stupid things a lot to learn. Some people genuinely want to learn how to play the game and have fun. T^T I learned the most basic things from Markiplier playing it. The result? In my first play-through I died before winter even came. After that, I picked up the game by myself, taking advice from other people and.. actually I don't recall how I learnt to play the game, though a large part of it was experiencing losses and such myself. I remember when Dragonfly came to my base to burn it when I was a few hundred days in and in the end, I died to her. I nearly died to a Warg on the same world because I was not prepped well enough for the fight (1 armour, 1 weapon, trying to kite him) until I realized he would spawn hounds endlessly, which makes zero sense to me to this day, but at least I now know how to beat him. And it does not involve the same strategy as for the Spider queen. CaptainChaotica
Huh. That's similar to what I did--watched Jacksepticeye's old, ollllddd playthrough of Don't Starve ("Strange New Powers" hadn't come out yet, and he was trying to speak with an American accent, that's how far back this was)--and it taught me things like how darkness can kill you, winter comes at "about day 20" and is a big deal, crockpots are important and beefalo are your friends except for when they have red butts. Due to that, my very first run lasted 31, almost 32 days. (I also saw the Markiplier one, but that was AFTER I got the game myself and started playing it...I think.) Anyway. I very much agree with the everybody starts off as a noob thing. The problem isn't new players (although why somebody would leap straight into the multiplayer without playing the original even ONCE kinda baffles me). The problem is new players who WON'T LISTEN. The ones who don't know anything but _can_ learn, are the ones we want to keep. Also, servers with easier settings won't really help because if they don't know Don't Starve at all, _they don't know what that MEANS_. Like, they have no idea how dangerous winter and summer are, so a server with a long autumn won't necessarily attract them because _they don't know that's the easiest season_. They also don't know that hounds are a regular thing, that treeguards and giants hit WAY harder than normal monsters, that tallbirds will attack you on sight...lots of world-gen settings would mean nothing to them. Heck, I once played on a server where not only did a COMPLETE newbie show up, I mean, he knew _nothing_ about the game, but he had chosen, of all characters to play as, WES! Needless to say he needed to be led to base despite copious signs and player-made roads/lines of trees (I was the one who did the leading), then died all the time. But, how is a new player to know that that's the hardest character to play as if they're, well, new? (Although the line "has trouble staying alive" might've been a warning.) I heartily agree that one should at LEAST, at the VERY least, have played regular Don't Starve enough to know that at night, it is pitch black and you are likely to be eaten by a grue...but there's no way to enforce that. :/ The problem isn't noobs in general. It's the _willfully_ ignorant that are the problem. And unfortunately, you sometimes see those in EVERY situation, game or not. ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/68635-an-appeal-to-noobs/page/2/#findComment-791708 Share on other sites
JimmyJam
Just going to say that i don't think a lot of noobs are going to be here. Also you cant really tell people to not play the game just becasue they don't know what they are doing. Also also DST never tells the player its harder than DS so most people don't know its harder. For me the best way to play DST is in a closed server with people you know or know are good at the game. Noobs have been and always will be on open servers before DST and after DST! BeastNips
This is difficult because I assume (given that he suggested it) that the OP played Don't Starve before Together was released. Lots of us are in that position; we played Don't Starve and then migrated to Together once we discovered we could play our beloved game with our friends. We need to ask ourselves: Would we have played single-player if Together was already there? I'll be honest, although I like the occasional stint in Don't Starve, I'd hardly choose to play single-player over multiplayer now. I can't blame new players for wanting to do the same thing, even if they are an inconvenience. Also - and I know this is a tired argument - once you get so good at the game, sheperding newbs is an interesting, ever-changing challenge that the base game no longer gives. PanAzej
DST, like most multiplayer games, is the best when played with your friends. If you count that some random people will be nice to you, just because 'im new', you're new to the world/internet, aren't you? For every 1 guy that wants to learn, there's like 10 that will hug your fridge forever and take your stuff. And even more of them is happy to ruin your base, because isn't it fun to ruin the fun of others? Play with a friend, make your worlds easier at the start, use some easy-mode mods. If you're content with that, good for you! Need more challenge? Disable mods, or leave world settings unchanged. I mean, it's not an easy game, especially at start. Learn through gameplay, easy-mode/modded or not, you'll learn new stuff. You don't need to sit through hours of videos and read hundreds of wiki pages to not be a completely clueless player.
