Tips on how to be Courteous to Fellow Players

Recommended Posts

Agreed, sadly it sucks to see 2-3 Wilsons running around, however, if a full Wolfgang is around, lots of beard hair, lots of health, lots of effigies.

A Rule:

  • The Bees and the Birds: Tell players to leave the bee boxes alone, wait until a certain time to get the honey, and plz, let no one eat the bird in the cage.

Never just grab what's in the crockpot unless you cooked it yourself.  Always ask!

Corollaries to this rule:

--Cook your own food

--Try to gather food ingredients while you're out and about.  (Not necessarily the exact same ones you used, but gather _something_.)

--If you take the last jerky, hang up a new piece.

Always have logs, grass and twigs on you.  Other players cannot drop everything to come rescue you, especially if they're halfway across the world from. And it's a good idea to have those things anyway.

If other players have actually put up a sign with directions on it to camp, and you're capable of reading it, then _follow it_.  I've had people ask me what the sign says rather than freaking _click on it_ themselves, then say they "can't follow directions" and STILL ask to be escorted.  Really?  You don't understand "left" or "follow the trees"?!

I try to be nice to newbies, but GEEZ.  "I can't follow directions".  Yes you can, you just don't want to.

I'd like to pop in and say how useful these tips have been.  Not afraid to admit that I'm still a newbie and have a lot to learn in this game (especially when it comes to the best camp locations and what to/not to fight).  Sadly I am the type that dies A LOT even when I don't mean to (with the main reason being those Pigmen as Webber).  Because of that last fact, I'm too nervous about joining public servers as I wouldn't be much help and I also don't want to be completely useless on a team.  I know that I'm new and I shouldn't worry about that last point, but not everybody agrees with that mindset.

Anywho, thanks for this great topic!  I've taken notes on the do's and do not's of what to do.  Maybe I'll give a public server a shot one day!

Oh, I still kind of feel like a bit of a third-wheel idiot when I join large servers that have been going for a long time, too.  It's like...you already have all this stuff...exactly what can I do (that would actually be useful)?

So I basically just wander around gathering anything useful, the way I do when playing singleplayer, and hope that SOMEthing of that will turn out to be needed once I get back to camp.  : P

And I die sometimes too--usually to being way out in the world, away from anything helpful--when a HUGE wave of hounds shows up. Heh.

I know of a good tip I didn't learn of until later:

If you die and are stuck as a ghost for a while, don't go haunting everything.  A good majority of stuff have negative consequences to your hauntings (mainly turning pigs into werepigs, summoning Treeguards, turning flowers into evil flowers, etc.).  There are a few positive ones (like growing your farm's crops) but it might be best to not haunt anything...except for the Florid Postern if you're on an Endless mode server.

But that's all I got since a lot of other great tips have been said already.

It depends on who I am playing with. At some point, I just expect you to take the food if I prepare lots of food. Asking whether you can take it will just waste our time. Just take it and make sure you contribute is all I ask.

Sure, if we are low on food and there is only one crockpot with food, then that would be the appropriate time to ask.

That's pretty much what I meant--the last part.  If it's early in the game, you don't have many resources yet and multiple people are hungry, and you cook something for _you_ but someone else grabs it...HEY!  When things are plentiful later on, sure, you can be more casual about it.

That particular "rule" isn't based off of numerous of my own experiences or anything, noooo...

Oh, and the haunting thing--two words:

Fire.  Hounds. (In the middle of winter, when you just naturally assume it IS okay to fight hounds in camp!  MacTusks (and their hounds) EVERYWHERE + newbie + ghost = OH MY GOD WHY IS EVERYTHING BURNING.)

People grabbing your food is especially bad if you're one of the types that will wait until your hunger is below 15 before eating so that the rest of the team is okay.

I've never done this in practice since I normally base alone, but if you're a ghost and can be revived, you could ask if people if they want treeguards/werepigs/dark petals. Werepigs give beter loot than normal pigs, and the other two are magic ingredients if your team has a presto/shadow manipulator already. Even hounds can help farm red and blue gems you need.

Clearly don't unleash haunted things on the unprepared and unexpecting, but ghosts can be useful if they're under control. It never hurts to ask!

And dark petals would be probably the best one, since the evil flowers don't get up and walk around in your face/attack you directly.

Speaking of, anybody else have this weird thing I had once, where I got some evil flowers on the full moon, and then the bees pollinated them and they _spread_ everywhere?  I swear, it's like they were cross-breeding the evil and normal flowers.  After a while my base was surrounded with them no matter what the moon phase; it was weird.

Then again, that was also the year of the Summer of Death, so I might've been glitching all around.

When a Bee pollinates six flowers of the same kind in a row, the breed of flower it pollinated will be mapped to the Bee's memory and later reproduced if the Bee is off-screen and unable to pollinate other flowers in range. This only happens rarely.

Huh.  I knew it probably had some pattern in the coding, but I had no idea the specifics of how it worked.  Anyway, yeah.  The same year that saw the (possibly glitched) Summer of Death where I died 3 times in one day even WHILE using multiple heat precautions, also had poor Willow's base get overrun with evil flowers.  I mean they were EVERYWHERE.  It was kinda cool looking, but did mean I could barely go away from my firepit without my sanity dropping.

On the plus side--FREE NIGHTMARE FUEL FOR ALL!  : P

And don't tell anyone yo are op player who prepare to winter in autumn's day 10 in place to goo and kill dragonFly

And remember you can't help to all players.

More new comers take to base, then bigger is risk. Iff you see Willow then risk is bigger:D

Don't ask to many questions. If you see player wont answer than don't ask again, or you may start a conflict on empty place, with all following effects. (kick, ban, grief, reset )

And if you see and idiots (not helping, kicking ghosts who is not afk, base not for you"you are not welcome" giving names for coalelephants, conflicting about food) than its after you to chose. take hammer "'žanis:D" and torch.

Hey, what's wrong with naming animals?

Are you saying asking questions is bad?

Hammering and burning down someone's base, even if they're rude or you believe them to be idiotic, is definitely not Courteous behavior and should not be encouraged.

Do not dis the pet poop machine. The pet poop machine is good.

On that note, if there's a koalefant penned in or free-roaming near base without the tracker actively hunting it, leave the koalefant alone. They could be being kept around for other reasons. Poop, hound distraction, emergency-only food/vest, heck maybe even just for a no-maintenance pet.

If you didn't track it, don't kill it.

A side note, why this thread is still alive and threading? No more new ideas left I assume.

First of all, it's pinned.

And when someone does think of something, it doesn't hurt to have all the advice gathered in one place, rather than across fifty different threads that get lost to time.

As long as people have new ideas of how to act courteous, this thread will be here ready to welcome such ideas.

It's a great and helpful compilation, and is pinned for a reason :)
