DST Beta Update (Phase 2) - October 9th

Welcome to the Thunderdome Phase 2!

That’s right, we’re in Phase 2 (Beta Registration Applicants) now. What does that really mean?

First off, it means we’re now handing out keys randomly to people that applied for the closed beta. The process is truly random and unbiased: if you’re reading this, it’s possible there are keys sitting in your inbox right now. Hell, even if you’re not reading this and you’ve never played Don’t Starve (but you applied for the closed beta), that’s possible. Because we don’t want to bite off more than we can chew, keys are going out in relatively small batches for now. But we’re ramping up distribution: the batches will get larger and larger as time goes on. We actually started Phase 2 yesterday; there are now enough people in the game that people can easily find servers to join and people to play with!

The first small wave of people that have been playing made a herculean effort in reporting bugs and helping us to shore up the build. While it’s still a beta and there will still be bugs, we’re now at a point where the game is stable and the majority of large gameplay issues have been fixed. A side effect of this, which is way more exciting to me personally: people are playing. I mean that in the figurative sense, not that they are literally operating their keyboards and mice in the game: they’re having fun! They’re playtesting, as opposed to just testing. As the game grows, we’re looking at feedback and people’s experiences and addressing issues as they become apparent.

We had a massive number of people apply for the beta, so us entering Phase 2 doesn’t mean that everyone that applied is getting in immediately. We send out keys on a daily basis between the hours of 10am and 5pm PST. So, between those hours, keep an eye on your inbox :)

Even though this is just an update about where we’re at, I can’t help but include a tiny taste of my usual Fireside Chat wordiness. For those interested:

I was watching a stream the other night and the streamer was talking about how he didn’t expect to enjoy Don’t Starve multiplayer, but he was surprised to find that he really enjoyed surviving with others around, building his base, greeting random people as they joined his server and escorting them safely through the cold winter landscape back to his base. His experience was not unique, either: I’m seeing more and more people talking about the fun they’re having playing Don’t Starve Together and how it’s been surprising in all kinds of ways. It’s Don’t Starve, but it’s not.

I can’t stress this enough: you’re together. It’s a simple phrase, but it has an enormous impact on the experience of playing Don’t Starve. The social nature of playing together and the discovery and emergent behaviors that go along with that have fundamentally changed the game. We didn’t change the core mechanics to achieve this: it’s just something that happens in a multiplayer game. And it’s very cool to watch. I’m extremely busy reacting to feedback and bug reports and planning for the future, but I hope to sit down and write a longer Fireside Chat before too long.

Fantastic! May fortune smile upon all who entered. I am happy that the Beta is bearing such fruits thus far (especially this is directed toward the comment in the spoiler tag)! I'd love to see more of this stuff at work, and eventually get playing myself! Anyway, onward, phase two!

I could have expected this... No key for me.

Can some generous soul show some mercy over dying person and share his/her key? I'd be very grateful.

Also I have feeling that I will be choosen at the end of beta testing...

Just a thought, When do you think Dst will be for mac? Just a random number, Like 3 months. I know, I've said this before, But it's weird having the Keys, and not being able to play.

Thanks for being such a swagtastic, Potato Cup eating, Person Seth!

Every time I have a alert for a new email I will be excited, then saddened to see that its not a key, but just a email from Amazon.

Yes but the real question is, when are you putting the Potato Cup in the game? Those 64 man servers you guys have, those are solely for the purpose of testing the Potato Cup, right?

I have not at this point gotten a key yet! Let the TRUE WAITING commence!

Actually I'd rather not wait and just have a key now
