Favorite/Least favorite New Feature to ROG?

Recommended Posts

I am curious to know what are some of your favorite new mechanics and or features to the new DLC of DS, or your least favorite? I ask because I can't buy the DLC yet so I can't imagine the awesomeness of it. I have read about the new things but I have yet to experience them. I would like to know from other players their opinions.

Favourite: Cactus because I like the filler/sanity and the flowers are good, also Deciduous Forest cause I think it looks nice

I hate that the dragonfly sets everything on fire and the summer combustion, cause I like keeping the surroundings nice, i dont even pick up flowers and carrots ^.^

Favorite: The giants because the deerclops was sad when he was alone, and each seaons have a giant now so I'm happy to find new challenge and the new characters(Webber,Wigfrid)

Least: The wetness. Its really hard to move out from my camp .

Favorite is the new forest biome.  Has a unique feel and the world gen needed some more verity.  Wigfrid is also amazing.

Least is some of the little nerf tweaks to the structures. It's usually not hard to adapt, but sometimes they just creep up and nip at my ankles annoyingly.

I took about a 6 month break from the game and came back to so much content and a lot of it makes the game harder which I really like. Catcoons are fun and tumbleweeds make it possible to live in rocky areas.

Least favorite: Wetness, I like the concept but during spring it’s almost crippling. Since this change I consider spring harder than winter. I feel like I am doing something wrong. Also I really don’t like how quickly caged birds die.

Caged birds die  o_O

I like everything in RoG. I had stopped playing while they were adding content to the caves (I have no interest in spelunking), so it was fantastic to see that there was DLC for the overworld. Got right back into the game, loved all the new content, I believe it completes the experience.  I'm still playing everyday. It's too bad that (single player) DS is all done now.

The one thing I really dislike is how muffled-sounding summer is. I'd rather have to listen to the constant buzzing of bees and crickets and assorted insects than feel like my elderly ears have died on me.

It's only supposed to be muffled when you are overheating. Just a bug otherwise.

My favorite bit of RoG has gotta be Webber and Wigfrid.

It was only a matter of time once I started frequenting these boards that I got linked to see a roster for all the speculated/unimplemented characters for Don't Starve and I immediately fell in love with Webber's design from the start. Wx-78's was, and still is, a very close second, and I'd probably play more Wx-78 if I didn't feel he was so horrendously overpowered now unfortunately. Yeah, I know I don't have to eat the gears but... that's like asking me to not have 2 cape feathers and a blue yoshi, like asking me to not play my fiery win axe on turn 2, asking me to not quadra-magic-knights-of-the-round.

Anyway, can't tell you how long I waited hoping for Webber to be included into the game update after update only to see the basic game's development run it's course and out of time. Came this close to downloading a mod to get him in, but I decided against it on the chance that should Webber come to Don't Starve my expectations would be too drastically altered and I wouldn't be able to enjoy the official Webber so I shied away from it.

What can i say? I lucked out. I know a lot of other people are waiting for a character on said roster and maybe Klei will get to them, maybe they wont.

Wigfrid, on the other hand, was a character I had a mighty need for that I didn't know I had said mighty need for. Seriously, nearly every line out of her mouth is amazing. They're either super amusing to just plain funny. Also, I'm just really partial to the headcanon that Wigfrid's acting is so good that the reason why she draws power from fallen foes is because she's actually fooled the gods into thinking she's an actual valkyrie and has, sort of ironically, received the favor of said gods.

Seriously, they stole the show for me. They're both tied for my favorite characters, and I also really enjoy how both characters, from a game design perspective, actually turn the game on it's head a bit. No other character is solely dependent on meat based items nor is any other character have spiders as allies and friendly neutral mobs as enemies. It switches things up to say the least and I hope any new characters are balanced around switching up the gameplay like these 2 did.

Btw, the not-so subtle nod to Venom was a nice touch.

The only real complaints I have with either are just lines.

I really miss Wigfrid saying, "The tears of the gods fall upon me," especially considering it's replacement line which is just so forgettable. No really, I forgot it, it's a much weaker line IMO.

Also it's weird that Webber says, "Protect me tree!" and not "Protect us tree!" and it's also weird for Webber to say, "Our father herded goats," instead of "My father herded goats," considering how it's implied that Webber's unique condition is something that happened after birth, meaning Webber's other half probably has no biological relation to Webber's father, so it wouldn't be "our," but maybe that's just me.

My least favorite bit about RoG is summer.

Summer is just a huge letdown for me especially considering all the potential there. I love how nitre was included in the endothermic fire recipes, I love the idea of objects beginning to smolder and players having a chance to prevent a huge forest fire, I love the idea of the ice cube and how the dynamic it creates considering how fast it makes people become soaked, but the problem is that Summer doesn't do enough to differentiate itself from Spring or Fall. Not only that, but Winter really makes you feel like you're in a whole new world with how drastic the world looks different while summer doesn't. It's the other end of the spectrum but it doesn't look the part.

Not only that, but I'll never forget walking into my first winter and seeing a snowbird land on the ground. That really made me feel like I was stepping into something brand new. Hound attack? "Oh god! What are those white things chasing me?"

Summer? More of the same. You even have unique mobs during Winter like MacTusk and co and the pengulls. Summer? Again, lacking.

The base is there, Summer could be awesome, and yet it's not. It's really disappointing.

I don't mind Spring not being so different from fall because they're supposed to be a bit more lukewarm and middling, but not Summer. Summer should look, feel, and be just as different as Winter is from Spring and Fall. Make it neat, make it awesome. Give me incentive to leave the base instead of huddled between 3 to 4 ice fling-o-matics.

Favorites:

-Webber (I like how he looks, his low sanity, and the different approach you need to have when playing with him)

-Catcoons, but only when worn as a hat, especially if worn by Webber

-Giants (Dragonfly more than the others, because it is the most challenging of the giants)

-The 4 seasons (including their respective mechanics, i.e. wetness, overheating, and freezing)

-Weather in caves (most players hate it, I actually love it. Just makes the caves more challenging in general --> you need to bring extra items to counter weather --> less room for what you gather and more risks of being caught off guards with no armor. Cave camp are also now much more needed than before because of that, and I just like it)

Least favorites:

-Flowers turning evil during full moon (way too easy to get nightmare fuel)

-Glommer (another follower to manage and he doesn't do much, even as Webber you don't need his sanity aura)

-The Old bell (I hate the fact that to get this really powerful item, you need to kill the easiest to kill creature in the game, i.e. Glommer. Krapmus is not a problem either, even when there are 3 at the same time)

-Wigfrid (I like the concept, but I just think she is way too strong on her own right now, and for that reason I don't enjoy playing with her)
