Hello :flustered: I'm looking to make this request ahead of time because of something us modders have noticed in the files which is super scary given how it's presented, I'd like to explain why and ask for revisiting the thing before yet another totally preventable obsolescence of modded characters happens - and currently happening btw (all modded character are crashing)

Quick version for a dev reading : Please auto-generate the icons of the emote wheel with SkinsPuppets
Now for the details.

It's really nice that much needed functionalities like what Geometric Placement offered (at least some of it) is brought to vanilla for players that couldn't be using mods. And it is looking like we're getting next an official Gesture Wheel ! The oldest mod I've been using since release :distracted:

Nice... except it's done wrong ? For a couple of reasons, mainly first, the game currently requires any played characters to have an emote atlas file such as the one under, featuring each vanilla emotes which we are going to have to generate manually :

emote_wurt.png.576c2bf59322146da333b3b0efc7ede3.png

As of now, it is essential for mods to have this file present for each of their characters, or the game crash. I can just assume this is a little negligence that will be sorted out later by including the shadow-post-it-guy unless the character emote file is present... but -

understanding we're meant to maintain our mods for players, and upgrade to this so mod characters don't get to misfit further, do you realize how massive and unpractical the task is to generate these files correctly ? And how about mod emotes ? It simply can't be a thing under these circumstances.

So it's asking for a favor, but really please rebuild this more akin to how Gesture Wheel did it ^
Never did a mod have to generate bulks of image to show their pretty characters posing and even show some new cool moves. If the mod got it right, you can to. And thanks, I still love modding your game !

Was trying to take a break from the forums, but I genuinely cannot stress how important this change is.

Changing it to auto-generate via the Skin Puppets would save SO MANY mods and artists SO MUCH hassle.
This not only saves modern day artists like myself the hassle of having to generate so many icons across so many published mods...
But it also saves literally every single existing modded characters that's since stopped development.

If it goes through as-is, every workshop character not actively being updated is just gone, flat out. Or, alternatively, if a fail-safe is put in place, those mods are stuck with placeholder icons when... they could've been generated on the fly, as the current Gesture Wheel mod does it.

Beyond the major issue outlined here, it also just doesn't make sense to create these images in such a tedious and (probably) more resource-intensive way, when a mod that came out probably 8 years ago does it in a simple and concise way that doesn't automatically make every modded character obsolete.

Deeply hopeful that we'll see some changes here, because this simply cannot go through as is.

Not only are old character mods going to break, but people who wish to make new characters will crash because everyone is still using the outdated Esctemplate sample character template. There's going to be a lot more people spamming the same crash in the modding forum, and getting those icons faithful to the vanilla poses will require people more experienced with spriter to make over 20 poses to put as a png as each emote, extending the tedious process of character creation. 80% of modders also do not know how to use spriter pass the initial character creation process and I feel there are going to be a lot more people struggling here.

the only possible issue i COULD see with them using the puppets is that some skins (wortox, wormwood) will clip through the top of the container very slightly but i genuinely dont think thats too big of a deal

Spoiler

(you can see this happening here with merrymaker, but it is waaay more obvious with snowfallen wortox, and im sure blooming wormwood

otherwise, i think this would just be a better way to go about it in general. i do think these versions of the icons have charm and are a lot more visually clear than some of the mod ones, but im pretty sure they could emulate them just fine

Only the modded emote wheel existed, until this beta that is

Okay, does the “new version” change the way the emote wheel works on Consoles too then???

it’s really stupid that betas only exist for PC players, the changes Klei make do not just effect PC they effect everyone..

And I still haven’t gotten used to how much more tedious it is to navigate the updated Craft UI compared to prior to its existence.

Dont change “consoles” emote wheel Klei, it literally works fine as Is.

using puppets will not change the emote wheel in mechanic. it would be an extremely minor visual change that would allow it to adapt to the current skins being used

we also havent gotten it yet, this is just assets we found - but im almost certain they have no plans on changing how it would actually feel to use for console players

Then again they don't have to put the character under the frame : ) or much more solutions can be explored like cropping models or other.

Also to add to this, not using image would have a lot more utility, we could have the emote pre-play on the buttons or such.

And I really, REALLY, sincerely hope this won't be made in a hostile fashion which will forbid us from easily making new emotes or such because I was actually hoping to make a few more, but the way it's presented atm is near impossible and has too many constrains when we account for mod characters. I really just hope this will be mod friendly and I sure bet we'll make cool things out of that.

I think even if they had done it with icons, they would have made a plug-in for the mod's characters to Pattern mistakes. But since they still have a lot to work on, I'm sure they'll do it right, they're quite competent at it, so I think it's worth just relaxing and waiting for them to add a "wheel of emotions":wilson_blush:

This will suck as it is, there is a large amount of mods that will break, including my own. A generic placeholder should be made at the very least. Optimally, placeholders could be generated automatically when the image is not present. I think this would save everyone a great deal of pain.
