Controller Gameplay needs a QoL update

Recommended Posts

There are many interactions that are very difficult or just straight out impossible on controller due to how the controls work. While some features have gotten better over the years,  I feel like controller gameplay deserves a QoL update to adjust the issues. A major one being to be able to drop items in the ocean(like the growth formula starter) because this interaction is actually impossible.

Another thing that would be nice is a change on how teleportation (lazy explorer, wortox, etc) or how things are aimed (sea fishing rod, strident trident) because it makes some items/characters vastly better on keyboard then it does on controller. Being able to toggle where it goes on the screen would be great.

And lastly another issue that makes the game more tedious on controller is there is no sort of building mode. On pc there r mods such as geometric placement mods and you also don't have to worry about putting things in the wrong spot due to being able to click wherever however on controller you have to try and move the analog stick back and forth just to get your character in the perfect position on whatever structure you're trying to place.

I keep telling Klei all we need is a weapon/tool wheel and a toggle-able mouse.

Press down right stick for mouse and press down right stick for wheel (then just click "X" on ps controller for the tool/weapon and the wheel will go away).

Pressing both back button could also be an option for something. Or a back button + circle/square/triangle/X. There's a lot of options.

I've also suggested a setting on the menu that adjusts the distance for teleporting from self (in place), to short, far, very far (edge of screen). Place it below Wigfrid's funny words.

Also the the same button is used for un-locking a target and using an item for some god forsaken reason. You can still use the same buttons for un-locking and using something, but it should require the player to hold the button down for a period of time like 3 seconds or something. You could even add this as something toggle-able in the menu as well, to un-lock do you want single press, double press, hold for a short period, hold for a long period.

GG, EZ (Coding it in is a whole nother issue though).

About a year or so ago Klei announced they had hired a team of developers who’s entire “job” is to improve the quality of the game on Consoles, from my understanding, these people were not hired to come up with content ideas or assist in the development of Klei’s roadmap schedule plans- these people were (from what I believed anyway..) only supposed to improve the QoL of playing the game on PS/Xbox with a Controller.

Anyone who plays this game on console with a controller can tell you that the Old UI was more “Console Friendly” then the New UI which is painfully obviously designed with KB+Mouse controls in mind. & while I’ve managed to mostly “Adapt” to the new & much more tedious UI, it still feels I guess you can say “Slower…?” for console players.

Then there’s a lot of actual gameplay features that simply work poorly or aren’t even available on console at all- such as anything that involves Drag & Drop controls.. such as Drag & Drop meat to tame Gnarwail or Drag & Drop Wood to distract Cookie Cutters.

This could’ve easily been solved by adding a Virtual mouse to the game, however.. in general I HATE games that look like they are very clearly designed with the intent to use a mouse to scroll to do things like Navigate the main Menu screen or select your characters/perks (cough cough MULTIVERSUS!!** While MV is fun, it’s also frustrating AF to drag that little reticle over what I want to select when RB/LB or Analog Sticks would’ve done it faster.)

Console gamers pay a monthly subscription just to play our games/use online features- so why does it feel like we quite literally pay MORE for a Worse gaming experience then people on PC?

We deserve a QoL, we can't play character like Wortox at the fullest because of the controller limitation. Also mentioned pc has mod like geometric placement, i think we all console player want badly that feature, it's also easy to implement because it's already in game (walls placement).

Please Klei help us to enjoy the game better! You have to do that since playstation player cannot merge the accounts with other platforms.. <3 <3

Many games have controller support. I don't see why this game can be so console unfriendly sometimes. All I want is the geometric placement or able to set pickup priority (Picking up traps when I am trying to pick up loot. Means I not only have to reset them but place them again.)

This isn’t a thing anymore, now you get the loots out the trap without picking it up, and the trap auto resets itself. (Beta Hotfix) :)

Yeah, picking up stuff many times it's really frustrating, like when i want to pick kelps and i have other stuff near the river and it show only inspect

While I do hope that we get QoL updates for consoles, I don’t expect much anymore. It’s really frustrating at times, but I do enjoy playing DST for hours on end regardless.

The new-ish crafting tabs took a while for me to get used to. Now that I am, I don’t mind it even though it’s optimized for PC.

I dream of a day we get anything like geometric placement, but even something like a toggle on/off snap for building things (similar to wall/fence placement) would be nice.

Also, this thread made me think of a meme:

Not a console player in the slightest, but I would not be the least bit upset or bothered (for whatever petty reason) if one of the future game updates focused exclusively on improving console experience and ironing out some of the major issues there in place of an update "for everyone"

As stuff gets added in you'll always build on new issues, and sadly a large part of the issues are prioritized for the keyboard and mouse players. While I'm not so trusting of fanbases to assume no one would complain about a "one-sided" update, it would be for the best to explain its an attempt to get all versions of the game on-par with each other with a large focus on improving the console experience. You can always sprinkle in some fixes to old minor bugs that might have not been important enough to get to, but focus on a rehaul of console playstyle.

If I could ask for two things to improve my console experience it would be;

  • The ability to rebind actions / action buttons in the settings menu

Many issues I have with using a controller come from certain actions being bound to odd buttons. A good example would be the target locking feature on console platforms to aid in combat. Currently, (using Xbox as an example), the button to unlock from a target is (B) which is fine but blocks the ability to use Wortox's Soul Hop, Lazy Explorer, Weather Pain. Simply allowing us to swap this to the (A) button would be amazing as interacting with objects is a very rare occurrence (only time I can remember is on a gate).

  •  A setting to tie all structure placements to a grid.

Very simple, instead of having to use walls or the edge of the map to line ourselves up for structure placement allow us to toggle a grid (similar to walls but on a much smaller scale) within the settings to allow for easier alignment. The hardest part of building on console is trying to line up objects when you don't have a good angle and trying to place things at a fixed distance apart. A simple togglable grid could solve (or at the minimum help) this issue.

I'm a PC player who uses controller, and there are some areas where I just feel handicapped for not learning to play with keyboard+mouse but other times I'm just glad controller works the way it does.

But I think my biggest gripes are Sea Fishing Rod/Soul Hop cursour and Weather Pain targetting:

  • Sea Fishing Rod and Soul Hop target a fixed distance away from the player, which might not be desired when getting the most out of soul hop or trying to fish in a certain spot. Can't Soul Hop in place or go for max distance in one hop.
  • Weather Pain only targets stuff in melee range, defeating the point of using it. This is most prominent when trying to use it to clear Toadstool's trees or CC's crystals.

I could maybe live with Sea Fishing Rod being left unchanged, but Soul Hop and Weather Pain I feel are a priority, especially Weather Pain, PLEASE, I WANT TO DO TOADSTOOL OPTIMALLY!

I used to play with a controller on my pc to make controls easier on my hands, considering playing a keyboard game with joint issues isn't the easiest thing in the world. The way DST supports controllers, in its current state, is frustratingly difficult to use, and I ended up switching back to using a keyboard. Personally, I don't know how you would go about fixing this, as the game was obviously designed for keyboard play, but there should be some changes to how the controls are translated imo

This would only be putting tape on a problem instead of actually fixing the problem.

we don't have to just use a controller, I was only giving an idea for people who dont want to play with controllers, im not trying to replace controllers entirely-

Honestly some companies just design an entirely different version of the game for consoles, that way they don’t end up with features that work for one platform, while running into features that don’t work so well for others.

And if Klei has really hired a group of people whose only job is to improve the quality of the game on consoles- I would like to see that group of peoples efforts in improvements.

I don’t ask for much, but if you tell me you hired people to do a specific task I expect to eventually see the results of those peoples task.

They can maybe come up with creative ways to more quickly access your Quick Craft tabs for example, because scrolling to it and highlighting the area to switch tabs is a pain in the ass, it’s slow & it could be improved by doing something like “Hold Button/Tap Button” doing different things.

Like- Tap LT/RT to quickly to highlight the quick craft menu Tap it again to open the full craft menu, HOLD to Close/Exit, Tap LB/RB to cycle the crafting tabs quickly without needing to scroll to the arrows on the screen to change tabs. Meanwhile, you can change Map Rotation (what LB/RB currently does..) to a 2-3 second hold.

This is just an example: other things that would improve the game is areas where we need to drag, drop or aim anything.. which could be done by Holding Y (currently inspect for Xbox) and holding Y will pull up a virtual mouse arrow- (like damn Klei my Xbox has a built in Internet Explorer that uses this virtual mouse for point/click controls..) It would be lovely if I could do things like-

Drag meat to Gnarwail to tame him. Drag Wood to water to distract cookie cutters. Drag things I don’t want into the ocean so it’s lost to the sea forever and isn’t just thrown on the ground in my world to cause unnecessary lag/slowdown. Aim Weather pains, Wortox Soul Hops, Fishing Rod Casting and Water Balloons better.

You get the idea of how much better the console game would be if it just had that “Xbox Internet Safari” Virtual mouse arrow.

Using this as an excuse to bump: they likely meant tooth traps, not regular traps.

Hi, PC player and kb+m enjoyer there. While I sympathise problems of console players and controller users and wish them not to suffer, you sir are crossing the line with your claims. Why would I need to suffer as kb+m player if developers suddenly decided to design features around controller? Moreover, design around controller in general is a handicap in all games I've seen, everything that can be done with controller could be done with kb+m better or at the same level.

I really hate to the teeth grinding when game arrives to PC after being console-exclusive, but without any adapting of controls, especially if that is series of games like Dragon Age, where first 2 games were comfortable to play with kb+m (designed for it), and then 3rd one was just spit in the face for any kb+m fan of series since controls were simply copypasted and unadapted (over9000 buttons to just select target, attack it and pick loot; seriously?). This shouldn't happen with DST. Never. Gameplay shouldn't be handicapped because of input device, and this goes both for controller and kb+m.
