Are you speaking of inventory management? I don't know how else to tell you this, but it feels much more natural and correct to move and use your mouse to select things, especially initially, than to memorize what inventory slots are what number and constantly keep track of that. I basically only ever use the 1 or 2 key and leave the rest up to my mouse.

with the exception of the first slot which is bound to my mouse and the next 2 slots which I can hit with my ring finger, moving my mouse cursor is just straight up faster than moving my hand from WASD all the way to the rightmost number keys so I have no reason to use them

What mouse do you use Guille? Does it have side buttons?

Most mice made within the past 20 years have side buttons :ghost:

HOW COME EVERY DST YOUTUBER NEVER USES NUM KEYS AND JUST USES THE MOUSE WHICH IS SLOWER AND LESS RESPONSIVE. From a confused angry dst player

How is the mouse slower and less responsive? It's faster and more responsive for 6-9, the only option for 10+, and about the same for 1-5.

This game doesn't really have anything else you need to click on so the numkeys offer no explicit advantage. It's personal preference. I use numkeys most of the time for 1-5 but never for 6-9.

Yes, you are right, it was a dumb question. But I'm still interested in how he maps his keybinds, if his mouse probably has two sidebuttons, why only one of them is used for an invetory slot? What about the other button, is it used for something?

steelseries rival 310 and yes side buttons are standard for every mouse nowadays lmao

I used middle button for inv 1 before but I changed it to mouse 4 like yesterday since I remembered there's support for that now, I don't use mouse 5 for anything yet but maybe I'll come up with something

Map or toggling the craft UI are good choices.

I don't think it's physically possible to play solely numpad. The last five slots of your inventory can ONLY be accessed using the mouse.

jinxed it

btw I'm now trying mouse 5 for the crafting menu and X/C to cycle through the new pinned tabs, seems very comfortable so I'll stick with it

I typically use 2 or 3 on the keyboard, but I have 5 buttons mapped to the first 5 inventory slots and use them a lot.  I think part of why many players don't is because the numbers bind to an inventory slot but NOT a specific item.

Lets say for example I have armor in 3 and I'm picking cactus.  I equip the armor, which drops my backpack, I pick the cactus, then grab my backpack and continue.  Now lets say do this pattern but my stack fills and the new cactus enters inventory slot 3 because it is the earliest empty slot.  Now when I pick up my backpack I've got to move it over so my armor can return to slot 3.  If I somehow overlook this (I am pretty blonde) I might just eat the cactus on accident when I try to equip the armor next time.

I'd really like a future qol update to include type bindings so you can say "button 1 is an axe" rather than "button 1 is inventory slot 1."  This way I can know I'm equipping an axe and not eating monster meat that I didn't notice I picked up...
