Urgent problem happened! HELP PLEASE

Recommended Posts

Hello to everyone! I have an urgent problem. I forgot my DST server was on without pause. And I lost my 2324 days game server. How can i get it back? The game automatically created a new world. I don't know how I forgot. HELP PLEASE. is there a way to save my game? it just happened today.

sorry but unless you did a backup copy you cant recover it...

maybe with a program like recuva you could recover the folder

i really hope klei adds something for this becuase i always fear this everytime i pause and do alt+tab

i recommend you to create a folder in a safe place or in a online store service like google drive with your wolds and save them everytime you finish you play season or every few days atleast

Assuming you mean your same world cluster regenerated (death timer reaching 0 or any other reason we could think of), then I'm sorry but certainly this is lost for real. :(

This scenario is usually why I would recommand players to make their world in endless, that change about nothing to the game experience but  assures you to not loose a world for a tiny mistake. So there's that and be sure to make backups of your worlds every now and then to avoid any technical problems nobody is safe from them. You only need to copy paste your different world folders that you can access directly in game, this will certainly prevent this from happening again.

Thanks everyone for the advice. So there is no exact solution. because I didn't get any backup.

Did it delete the old one because she recreated the world? I'm in shock right now. All my accumulated items are gone. I've been playing this server for 2 years. :!:

So what should I back up?? I dont know how...

if you play on console there is a folder icon near your saved worlds, click on it and it will lead to your documents foldee--->klei----->dontstarvetogether---->folder with a weird a long number as name. Inside you will see folders with "cluster_[number]", each cluster folder is a world, just copy the desired world folder in a save place. If something happens you will only need to copy the copied folder back to saved worlds folder

what i do is copy the folder in my desktop and google drive and rename them with the name of the character im using in that world

sorry if isnt clear, i could share screenshots when i go back home if you didnt understood it

I constantly make backups of my worlds, but I guess most of us find this out the hard way

I've never experienced anything like this before.

THANK YOU! I'm playing on the computer, but it seems clear, I'll try.

But in endless the experience is easier and sometimes teaches new players in a wrong way. Correct if am i wrong, but there you have endless resources, things spawns, you can choose whatever character just die and you loose everytime the map (annoying as hell).

From my 35 people who i teached the game, i tried with 3 and the results were bad. They weren't scared or precocious, they weren't encourage to experiment or try to advance in the game. I only use endless to experiment in the game, like boss fights, A.I or mechanics. I don't think that should be the way of teaching for new players, but anyone can play as they want in the end. I just trust the good old death and fear of loosing the world.

the only difference is that you can revive in the portal (thing that you arent forced to use), plants respawn arround the portal (so you can decorate with more plants), there isnt a countdown when all players are death (this makes losing the world impossible but nothing stops you to delete a world if you enjoy pemadeath) and ghost doesnt drain sanity (only noticeable with more than 1 player obv). So is the perfect choice for megabasing because not all the people can edit the world adding more shards to loot bushes and saplins and there is no countdown for the moments when im so dumb to die of darkness because i didnt click properly the pause buttom xD

the thing about losing the map and choosing other character when you die is from wilderness mode

Oh, okay i confused it then. Yup i can clearly see why it's used for megabase.

Same reason I was fairly inactive on dst in 2021 until Wanda released. World deletion is funny, makes you quit a game you'd love.

Absolutely! This was the only game I played constantly and lovingly. Now starting a new world sounds ridiculous.

Anyway, if I start with it, I always play by backing up.

Everything was going great until now. I'm still wondering how did I forget that. I had that stupidity today :(

And I'm still waiting for someone to say this is fixable.

sadly a lot of people have asked for the same fix but i never see anybody coming with a solution, the best you can do is move on or try to use Recuva to try recover the old world file but i wouldnt have faith about it

Is there a workshop mod like "No perma death" for DST? It's my favorite mod for DS, perma death is NOT fun after you lose a 100+ day world to something stupid ;-;

also sorry OP but your world is literally removed from your computer. You *might* be able to recover it with some special file recovery programs, but if you've been doing stuff on your computer since losing your world the data may have been overwritten.

you can play on endless servers is mostly the same

also in DS there were always the option of making backups in case something goes wrong. With how buggy it is i will be so triggered if i lose a world because of a bug xD

I just tried recura. it didn't work. I will continue on my way now.

In this way, I shorten my play-time by entering public servers without building a new world.

Thank you everyone. I guess that's it.

If there was a solution, it would be a Christmas miracle for me.

On a few occasions I have had some luck recovering data using PhotoRec (it's a free and open source file recovery program). If the stars align (let's be optimistic) it might be able to find those text files (saved world) that were deleted from the file system (in case you haven't been using that drive excessively, because then the sectors where the data was written gets overwritten for real, eventually).

If the program can find the relevant files from the saved world I would proceed to use some program with an in-files string search and try to puzzle together the files so the game can load them again. It's a long shot and requires some manual fiddling but the procedure is not overly complicated and in theory I guess it could work.

If you instructions how to do it we could try. The best thing you can do meanwhile is not to use said drive where the files from the saved world were located (hopefully not on the same partition as the file system, because a lot of reading and writing happens on such partition).

Maybe @CarlZalph has others suggestions.

*if you want

**hopefully not the same drive as the operating system

PS. Sorry for the typos.

I tried other programs but the files are overwritten because the world was rebuilt.

I've officially given up. Thank you again.

Unfortunately not, file recovery from a drive is a hit or miss action and can take a lot of time to do with no results.

An alternative going forward is to use a backup solution that automatically backs up your world save to something like a cloud service or another folder, preferably with revisioning so you could theoretically go "back in time" to the start of the world.  But this is system dependent.
