Oxygen Not Included [Animated Short] - Anything for a Laugh

Recommended Posts

Hey Everybody!

Just for fun, we thought we would release this animated short for you all!

Thank you so much for all the feedback and support during the launch of Oxygen Not Included: Spaced Out!

We're headed out for a break and we'll see you in the new year with more updates and fun stuff.

Have a safe and happy holiday out there everybody!

Is it just me or do anyone else find it in extremely bad taste to portray someone that very clearly suffers from severe sociotropy combined with self-destructive personality disorder as an object of entertainment?

Not the first thing i thought about while watching this. For sure those disorders are serious stuff but i just saw a duplicant being self destructive due to the nature of them being kinda silly. This Ari just took it to the extreme. I was more concerned that after she fell through the airlock everybody was like "oh well".

Hahaha, excellent! Thanks!

Naa, it is Dupes. So no problem.

OMG, did Klei looked into my psychiatry suggestion post and implemented in this animated short? Depression as a new disease - [Oxygen Not Included] - Suggestions and Feedback - Klei Entertainment Forums I see a stressed dupe showing self-harming behaviors, acting abnormally by doing random things and even suicide by hanging over, just as I proposed. The resemblance is astonishing.

i think this is a bad and borderline reductive-by-addition way to look at it.

The short is admittedly indeed about little Ari displaying extreme sociotropy and partaking in incredibly self destructive measures to maintain what they believe their social status to be, but i do not think that you are outside of the realm of understanding that the reason why it is as extreme as it is, is because of the nature of the slapstick cartoon humor that it features. Note how Ari fares just fine right after the screen transitions away from them in every single incident short of the very last one, I would consider it relatively harmless dark humor at most. As much as I think cartoons can absolutely delve into issues like the ones you've mentioned, I think it's also possible for them Not to do that as well.

Really nice short! :butterfly: Its always fun to see the way ONI colonies are interpreted in 3d for the backgrounds of these shorts. I really enjoy how the ceiling transitions from sandstone to what i believe to be insulation as the duplicants draw closer to the surface, and the airflow tiles lining the ceiling.

I call it fun! Also look at the framerate! AMAZING!

Enjoyed the skit and found it to be both creative and funny. I hope that we get many more and many more updates for years to come as well.

A side note, their sounds are very reminiscent of the instrument used to create the original Star Trek series. I forget the name of it, but I am betting you could duplicate the duplicates' voices with it.

It is a Theremin, I believe.

Yes! That is it. Very interesting instrument of sorts. Named after the inventor, I believe. The Duplicates use a vocal sound that is very similar to the Theremin. I hope we get a singing Duplicate one day!
