Dealing with the Deerclops with a new player

Recommended Posts

Hello!

Me and a friend of mine picked up DST because she has a wooden PC and we want something we can play together. I haven't played in a long time and she was never an experienced player to begin with, so when the Deerclops turned up on day 30, especially the Winter's Feast variant with it's lazors, we got promptly rekt and had all our stuff smashed up.

I'm really tempted to turn him off, but I feel like he's there for a reason, he's supposed to be a milestone challenge and beating him would surely be a great feeling.

She plays Wendy, I'm gonna swap to Wigfrid (was Wolfgang before). She's not used to kiting and the Deerclops is a pain to kite anyways (especially the variant with the lazer eyes), so I was thinking Marble Suit's, Battle Helmets, Battle Spears/Tentacle Spikes, honey poultices and just berzerk him from 2 sides with Abigail. Would that work?

Anything else we could deploy on day 30?

Anything else we could do other than fighting him?

making sure u have walking cane before deerclops spawns makes the fight much easier.

u could also install the Health Adjust mod and put player count to 1 so giants have the same hp as in solo Dont Starve. so u could solo deerclops without ur friend needing to jump in.

when deerclops uses his lazer dont run away in a straight line u cant outrun it u have to side step it. he'll lazer a few times then use his usual ice attack. the windups r pretty slow so u should be able dodge correctly according to the attack. attack twice then run. though if u play wig im sure u could just sit there and tank. especially as big wolf. 2 football helmets and 2 log suits should do the trick

Go to the caves and stay there until spring, food is a bit scarce there, options include spiders, rabbit people, and mushrooms. There's a very high chance there will be enough "rain" to completely wipe out your sanity.

Another option is to plant a ton of pine trees in a specific place beforehand, stay there when deerclops spawns the night of the 30th, and hope deerclops spawns a few treeguards. It's not the most reliable option.

You can also get his attention (one smack if necessary) and lead him far away from the base, then ditch him with a cave entrance/wormhole/walking cane.

The "stop kiting" video the last person posted was in single player where he has a lot less HP and armor stacks, so yeah, don't try that. XD But it -is- a pretty good show that in single player... yeah, armor stacking does all the work for you

I dunno, my usual approach for giants is to know more or less when they're coming and just _be_ far away from base when they show up, so they don't spawn near my stuff.  Then I generally just run off and ditch 'em!  : P  Or, even if you ARE gonna fight them, you _still_ want them away from base, especially Deerclops.  Just...not being home on the night of the 30th is a good idea in general.  (Even Mama Goose will destroy _part_ of your base to make her nest, if you base too close to a spawning point.  I found this out the hard way.)

Leading them into other dangerous things optional.  I do that if they're _there_, otherwise nah.  Just ditch.  In the wilderness.  I should mention that I often play alone and am BAD at the combat part of Don't Starve, so...your mileage may vary.

Heck, sometimes they can even end up being helpful if you do that--for example, the Bearger doesn't despawn when the seasons change...he just goes to sleep.  So, on one world, I had a Bearger peacefully living in the birch forest for SEVERAL YEARS (in-game ones, of course) and whenever I happened to be near there when hounds attacked, he'd kill them for me!  (thumbs up)  Beargers are _awesome_ for getting rid of hounds.  So are treeguards, until the packs get REALLY big, at least.

I also use the Spring Giant as my unwilling bodyguard/hound-killer all spring, too.  Giants have nice drops, yeah, but...sometimes it's advantageous to leave 'em alive.  And hey!  You're using what you already have and being efficient!  :D

...Notorious

I think the "safest" method to deal with him without actually killing him that I do is:

On Deerclops night, exit camp (make sure no one is near). Make sure to have a firecamp pre-built. Make sure to bring some grass and logs to make more fires, also bring some winter hats, logsuits, and a thermal stone (and maybe some food too, like a 1-2 meatball). When the Deerclops starts to follow you, just run to any big spider nest far from base (make sure he follows you, he can aggro onto you just for being close to him). Eventually he will start to fight the spiders. Once he starts fighting the spiders, you just leave. Never come back to that spot. And he will stay there for the rest of winter and you can go back to your base.

If you want to take him head-on, make preparations in armor, food, weapons and a light source, and leave base to some open area and set up a campfire (not a firepit - because it's a structure, it can actually be destroyed by Deerclops' attack unlike the campfire) in order to wait out til he shows up and also vitally to keep you from freezing so long as you fight like right on top of it.

So long as you play it right, you should be totally fine, even without kiting. Should anything go awry though, just rollback and try again - it could be a good way to learn and practice kiting, especially in preparation for other bosses or swarms or just tougher enemies.

Otherwise.. Like many others have suggested you can lead them to a variety of places to help you clear out some area and let nature do your dirty work - especially so for things like a Tallbird set piece, spider queen set piece, tentacle set piece, or that ugly field of angry bees outside an oasis. Limitless options, really.

hmmm for two people with marble suits and battle helmets it should be doable!

just to go into a little more detail (though most have already been said by atkvin above)

you need a campfire, not a firepit, because the deerclops can't destroy campfires
the winter's feast variant, however, can destroy campfires with its laser attack, which is why i positioned wes in a way such that the laser attack won't his the campfire

obviously the video was just an example of a best-case, your deerclops fights won't start out like that
the deerclops could arrive at night or your gear may be across the map, like any situation in this game, it's best to get prepared

i don't think honey poultice is really great, most players use food to heal
it heals a good chunk, stacks up to 40, and never spoils, but i find it to be too expensive for its purpose
its healing animation (takes a full second) is also slower compared to the eating animation

examples of healing food:

meats (longer eating animation, but usually cheaper):
pierogi, fishsticks, jerky, bacon and eggs, etc

easily available but heals very little, so better for healing outside of fights:
honey, butterfly wings, etc

quick eating animation and heals a lot:
gears (wx only), trail mix, blue cap, dragonpie (requires farms), etc

i still think that tanking the deerclops is the best advice for new players, because it's the safest and fastest way of dealing with the deerclops, reasons below:

  • it costs very little, you need only a few early-game items (campfire, log suit, hambat, few healing items)
  • it doesn't take much to prepare, the items needed are easily available and you can get them in a few minutes
  • it takes minimal skill, you just run to the deerclops and hold down F, that's all you need to do
  • killing the deerclops as quickly as you can minimises risks
deerclops has no chance of destroying any buildings and you're a lot less likely to freeze
  • this minimises exposure to deerclops's insanity aura (-400/min)
staying around the deerclops for a long while will make you insane
  • leading the deerclops away takes a lot more time and risks more temperature and sanity loss
  • leading the deerclops to fight other mobs is ironically more dangerous than just killing him
you take even more time, risk insanity and freezing even more, and risk being attacked by even more mobs
keep in mind that you're taking all of these risks just because you didn't want to hold down your F key
  • the deerclops eye is a nice drop that you won't get if you abandon the deerclops, blow him up, or feed him to hungry mobs
it lets you craft the eyebrella, which is very useful for spring, conveniently the next season after winter
  • if it's still not obvious, the deerclops fight is extremely trivial but rewarding, i don't see the point of making this more complicated than it should be

this has been established as the safest way to deal with deerclops for years now: https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/63424-stop-kiting-deerclops/

as for other seasonal bosses, the Goose is hilariously easy to kite and players generally keep the bearger alive

I do always get her to chop trees for me, because once you get used to her pathing she is great at it and doesn’t pulverize any of the logs the way Bearger does when charging. It is slightly more time consuming, but not much and very productive in my experience. Plus you don’t have to wait til fall to get help with chopping wood! She will usually spawn and kill a couple of treeguards for me too, so another tedious task taken care of. Still I almost always end up tanking her while standing on a campfire to finish her off. Gotta get that eye.

In defense of kiting the giant to other mobs: No matter what tryharders say, this is the Don’t Starve way and often really fun for new players. There’s very little in the game you can’t get another mob to kill for you, and there’s a reason for that. For a really good show, kite her into Dragonfly.
