Way to generate metal ores by using power

So the idea behind this since we have now the Power Plant room with Engineers boosting the buildings we will run out of metal at some point we could use a way to create ores like via concept of particle accelerator which would require large amount of power to create raw ore?

For example copper doesn't exist in other biomes than starting one

Particle accelerator creating large amounts of specific material sounds way too sci-fi even for ONI.

There are better ways:

  • Aluminum takes a ton of energy to process from ore to metal. There are very common aluminum compounds that are not considered ores due to how hard it is to extract elemental aluminum from them.
  • Magma contains iron and magnesium oxides. Rock crusher could extract small amounts of iron from igneous rock. A magma spout would make this renewable, but costly due to all the necessary cooling.
  • Sci-fi route: a plant described as bio-accumulating a specific metal could then be processed (using lots of energy) into ores. Could use some fantastic stats, like temperature range above boiling water, irrigation with liquid chlorine or petroleum, fertilization with regular fertilizer but tons of it.

I like the plant idea the most because its renewable and its a farming aspect too

I had the magma thing in mind myself, but maybe the plant idea can cover some holes that magma cant fill.

The idea a lot of people talked about at one point was just having the generator drop unrefined metal of whatever was used to make the microchip when it's buff ran out.  This makes it so you still have to re-refine it if you want to buff the generator again, but makes it sustainable.

What goes for power station, i don't understand why they don't make the "spare parts" into "lubricant" and change the input from refined metal to chlorine. Would be nice to have something to use the chlorine geyser for.

 

I'm just too lazy to make a chlorine filled storage area, just to make it germ free... Seems like a lot of hassle for no real gain.

IMO, tuning up machines should require a "microchip" only once and after that lubrication with a lubricant that is produced out of crude oil.

What could also work is something similar but not requiring another object, Use the metal to upgrade it, but the machine will require maintenance to continue to work. That way the player has to sacrifice some dupe time to keep the machine maintained.

That's a great idea. The machines "break down" and only the engineer responsible for this can fix up them (without the need for delivery of iron / copper / etc.), this would avoid large metal expenses, but would waste the time of the duplicates, negative side (which is good).

A little late response, but a plant to grow ’iron wood’ which has pretty meh properties, but can be turned into Refined metal. This crop will have really harsh growing conditions, will need a lot of fertilizer and a weird gimmick to it. It only grows in 60*c Hydrogen, but ironwood will smelt at 80*c or so... So the second you harvest then, they will smelt into an alloy you will need to cool down to proccess into usable metal. This seems the most ’ONI’ way if doing it in my opinion, and also gives a mechanical puzzle with the games current mechanics.

Could make it that it only grows using the following, Igneous rock (Since this is Lava and contains trace amounts of metals and minerals) as a fertilizer, Consumes Oil as its liquid, grows in 70+ Carbon Dioxide with a mass of 1kg or more and spawns naturally in the Oil Biome.

Since it is the only biome to contain an animal but no plant yet, and competes directly with the Slicksters so you have to choose which gets the CO2 as the slickster will eat it all. You also consume oil which is a valuable but renewable resource. So Consuming Oil(Renewable), Igneous Rock(Non-Renewable) to get Metal seems fair.
