Don't Starve Together - So Interesting

Recommended Posts

Been playing for a couple of months alone up to 1,300+ days but I'm taking it very slow to enjoy it.

DST is amazing, watching the dynamics of a people all trying to survive in a hostile world.   I tried a marathon session this weekend which finally (unfortunately) ended when players voted to restart during summer, wanted to make it through a full cycle.

DST was fun. I played until 1.3k days but I stopped ever since the antlion update :(. I was in the middle of sandstorm, in the only dessert, with antlion and dragonfly at the same screen. The retrofit for this patch is bad :(. I just walk too slow in the sandstorm, and fed up trying to get the goggle :(.

Start a fresh world? I really dont want to give up the effort I put on current world. Besides, I literally forgotten how to survive on early days lol.

Find a savanna with beefalo and camp near there. Manure is very important for food reproduction.

exploring the mape is the most important 4 days for me is spent just exploring never set a fire down unless you have to or found the basic supplies or time is getting low for the seasons. Why manure is important I would rush hunting equiment first boomerang, log suit, spear then move onto farms after you get a fridge or drying racks set up for persevations if your able to gather a lot of manure and seeds two farm plots and mass crops can be produced

Why manure is important

Finding beefalo is most important to me. They stay on lands full of grass and spiders which gives me equal hunting ground. Savannas are also placed near forest lands so I can farm for twigs. Once I find a savanna, I can go rock and gold hunting.

Oh sry what I meant was why manure is important I find it not the most important thing its value does does go up in after the first winter or spring as it continuously grows

I find hunting most important early game for healing and sanity while crops have more value in spring with frequent rain of increased growth hot pumpkins and watermelon hats for summer and dragon pies if you happen to get one a farms potentail is only really optimal where you get a birdcage as this  growing certain crops easier

though everyone has certain play-styles and characters make difference and I by no case an optimal player or try to play the very best this is just my experience and knowledge.

Night owls are owls too   probably ._.

Going back to topic, I think everyone wanted to reset in summer cause it's too annoying for them. The overheating gets kind of frustrating and Antlion might as well destroy your base while most people don't even realize what's going on. (I had many people suddenly ask "Why is my screen shaking?" and before I could tell them to run it was too late so rip base)

Oh, exactly. Summer is already not fun; I haven't yet had multiple people on when the Antlion started getting pissy at me but I already KNOW that wouldn't go well.  Any time you need _everybody_ to evacuate camp at once, there's always someone who doesn't understand, or stays there just to stay there.  (Deerclops or fire hounds (before you have a fling-o-matic) being the other examples.)  Unless everyone there is a veteran, and that's not always guaranteed.

And for those with only one desert?  Whoo.  Sandstorm + Dragonfly is bad enough...how 'bout sandstorm + hound mounds?  They're more scattered around and even _harder_ to see than the lava pools.  You CANNOT kite when you're moving that slowly!  Trust me.  I've tried it. Thankfully it was a fairly early-days attack and I had a mostly-fresh logsuit...

I'm very lucky to have _two_ deserts in my world where  it got retrofitted in...but it was close.  They're seperated by just ONE thin little river.  And the area that they both branch off from happens to be the Bee Queen's meadow...  Even luckier that the oasis is right at the _entrance_ to the Antion's desert, but maaaan, it could've been in the middle of sand-blinding nowhere, rather than near a pretty meadow with a confused romping catcoon!

Spoiler

(SERIOUSLYISN'TTHATTHECUTESTTHINGEVEROMGLOOKATTHEKITTIES!  The catcoon doesn't live in the nearby meadow; actually his/her lair spawned IN the oasis (near the desert edge!)  Because birch trees. I love this game's logic sometimes.)

And for anybody wondering, I too am a total night owl.  I've got the weirdest sleep schedule ever.  I often, like Willow, keep my sanity up by staring at a fire all night, and by "fire" I mean "computer screen".  ;)

...Notorious

This is a mindset that a lot of new players get stuck in and then never improve because, hey, it works.

After you've gotten a beefalo hat, the only reason you should be visiting beefalo is for some emergency meat or if hounds pile up and outnumber you before you can kill them. Because honestly, after you realize hound attacks can be tanked even on day 100+, manure is way quicker to get from werepigs, and farmplots are a terrible food source... Beefalo are pretty much useless for anything but big walking base decoration.

I lead the hounds to the beefalo so they help out in that regard. I've only started playing back in December so yeah, I'm a new player. Currently filling a journal with info on what I've learned so far. Going to try bird hunting soon so I can make a birdcage and give eggs to the pigking.

Save eggs for bacon and eggs good hunger/health item give the pig king monster jerky or gravedigger trinkets

make sure you bait with a seed for a bird trap and the type of bird doesn't matter

If your patient after pengulls leave after winter ends use your nitre and the rotten eggs to make gunpowder really helps with the seasonal bosses and you have to love that boom

Beefs are one of the main ways people deal with hounds, since they're big and team up when one gets attacked. But you can take out hound attacks alone with just a fresh hambat, tentacle spike, or battle spear (you should probably wear some armor too though just in case).
Get close to one, then dodge the attack, and then hit them three times, repeat for each hound as they come. Make sure not to let them pile up because they're dangerous in a group.

And hey, welcome to the game! That journal idea sounds pretty cute, I wish I did something like that when I was still new, could've had little doodles of mobs and stuff :p

Instead of taking the time to dry the monster meat into jerky, you can just turn it into eggs and give that directly to the pig king.

And I personally keep my trinkets for base swag, but they're definitely a good way to get lots of gold quickly.

  1. I managed to kill a koalefant with the help of a pigman but I'm not ready to fight hounds one on one. Still very dependant on beefalo and bushhats to get by. Though I'll tryyour stratagies and write them in my journal.
  2. notes from the first day.pngSAM_2003.pngI write my notes in here.
