What is the point of the game?

Recommended Posts

After a couple of weeks I was able to survive indefinitely when playing alone.   I could continue building ever more fantastic bases and acquiring the highest levels of materials but I don't see why this is required if I can survive already with what I have and the novelty value of acquisition isn't enticing enough.

Don't Starve Together makes it more interesting (and I haven't played with a group I know yet) but is it challenging in terms of survival or easy to live and another game of acquisition?   I entered about 15 open group games, they almost universally center around one base with everyone contributing (not always).   I keep it interesting coming in later and trying to establish my own base, it is that much more difficult when supplies are stripped by the other players.

I have an experimental idea that would require 3 players, it might have been done already but I haven't seen one yet out there.   it is a different approach to surviving as a "team".

How do all of you keep it interesting?   The competition mode in which players can attack each other, that seems appealing and I'll try that next.

I usually just play coop with a few friends on a private server. We've never fully defeated the game, so I've never had this problem.

Well, I'm pretty new so there is still a lot to learn.    Hmm, I'm reading about a lot of different challenging endings, is yours to defeat the Guardian?

Actually we've only recently even played with caves at all. We haven't really gone down there yet. One time we survived for over a year and killed bearger, but that is about as far as I have gotten. Usually we just stop playing for a while and eventually make a new server. Our goal is generally just to survive/prosper as long as possible.

Which is fine, to each his own but I can survive forever already by following a predictable and dull routine.

It's not appealing. Just make sure you grab the panflute before anyone else does. :^)

pvp in this game honestly sucks and is unbalanced in so many ways

This does happeb but might I suggest going out of the routine or doing adventure mode the game is limtless and has no clear direction or restriction so it is up to you to make your own Thats one main reason I play the weakest character cause he keeps me on my toes or when something goes wrong its a lot worse because I am him. For me that works for me @Silvercide post is a good to start or I suggest @BluesyBuesyj challeges in the video section of the forums. I've also heard that randomizing the seasons is really fun

I found that playing with more people makes the game harder to survive. As not everyone understand fully with all game mechanics, so I suggest you to try it with couple of friends, rather than just solo dst.

I have no problem at all to survive solo. But when I play with my friends, they just burn the base, lure fire hounds into base, taking berries without fertalizing, die to shadow creature, stand beside firepit during night, lure deerclops into base, over eat foods, don't even know how to kite and fight, killed by tentacle, die to darkness, and etc. And those are the things that make playing with friends so challenging. Good luck.

And ya I get it, you can actually just survive indefinitely without touching any boss, without going into caves/ruins, eating berries and honey to survive. I would say the fun of dst requires you to go find it yourself. What you need to do is unleash your creativity :)

wilderness server, random seasons, pvp enabled. i also like to tweak most of the naturally occurring food items to 'less'.

surviving alone is a breeze, it is people (randoms and friends) who do the most unpredictable things that make the game harder.

and as soon as the game feels too easy or like i am dominating it, i focus on whatever feels like it makes my life easier and tweak it. and i like to live in the caves non-stop. so there's that.

Try night only, starts season with winter, flint less, play wes.. have fun

Guardian is not a suitable challange for that. Bee Queen/Toadstool are, probably. The shadow pieces have a cool concept but their drops are meh and the fight is like a giant's fight(read: fancy mob) save for their special twist, and dragonfly is a joke.

Myself, I play(when I do at least) for the same reasons I did in singleplayer. Building good looking bases(which anr added more things you can do on this department), kill bosses(this part is more appealing in DST, tbh. More overall bosses and a couple of em are actually pretty fun to re-do. Let Queen Bee burn in hell though), raid ruins(in DST this part is so much worse, unless you regen the caves), etc.

funny you should say this as i just started a night only server today. season start is always random.

i also like to turn down flint because i usually end up with so much i am trying to force feed the moleworms just to get it out of my sight.

and random character choice. i always get a thrill of dread when i am waiting to see who i will be stuck with.

(really, just set everything to random. it is painful but fun.)

Have themed worlds.

Set clockworks to more.

Set butterflies, hound mounds, tallbirds and killerbees to more.

Test challenging mods.

Seek out a group of traditional roleplayers and see if you can handle a campaign AND survive (this one is my favourite and apparently it has much appeal given how now we get randoms asking about Project Rosebud).

Just like all game runners, make challenges for yourself! Like make a solo rush for killing toadstool, or rush for dragonfly kill. You can do it either solo or with friends. That keeps it fun!
Speaking of normal gameplay — I enjoy the early part. Exploring ruins almost naked, killing guardian, setting up a base... A lot of stuff to do and no time to lick your wounds!

Like the others suggested, do some challenges, I'm not sure if this is redundant, I only skimmed over, mais...

Five days to prepare and then you're in the caves for the rest of the game.

Start in the caves.

Solo the raid bosses, trophy hunt.

Host or join a wilderness PVP server and watch as primal instincts kick in as you all scurry to claim, gain and defend territory.

Lights out run, don't pick the obvious options, instead give Wolfgang, Webber, or Wes a shot.

Experiment with world options, turn down food, turn up hostile mobs, turn up giants, lengthen the seasons that give you the most trouble, etc.

Start in summer, winter or spring as opposed to the default autumn. Have fun struggling to cope with heatstroke, frostbite and rain as you struggle to scrounge up basic resources (ones that will wilt in summer and won't grow back in winter).

For added bonus on all of these, do it with friends.

Do it with friends who will die.

Do it with friends who will drain your sanity, haunt your pigs, and force you to drop your current task to revive them.

Hope this helped!

The point is to have fun. If you repeat same thing thousand times but it's still fun, you are doing right thing.

If playing is no longer fun I am guessing you need to try different characters, strategies or try to go for some interesting challenges.

Have you explored the caves, taken on bosses, and tried different characters? Have you tamed a beefalo? Have you tried surviving for a while without making so much as an alchemy engine?

I think for most people, it's these little things that keep it fun. But if you aren't having fun, maybe try another game.

I started DST, much, much better :).    Won't ever get tired of this.
