Stop playing on unattended public servers. Just stop.

Recommended Posts

It's getting to the point where you guys are like sorta slow toddlers continuing to touch the hot stove, inexplicably expecting it won't burn you this time. Enough is enough already. I don't know why they haven't done something about this yet, and it sucks that they won't talk to you guys about it, but until they finally decide to do so, it's time to wise up. Host your own servers and arm yourselves with the knowledge to deal with the jerks, or find others who are and have themselves. You're just almost doing it to yourselves at this point, and it doesn't make any sense.

It sucks. You should be able to play on these servers without having to worry about losers who thrive on making others miserable, but at this point in time, you can't. You know you can't. So stop trying.

THANK. YOU. I have stopped playing DST at all because of the trolling problem - not the people trolling, I've never been trolled, but the people complaining about trolling who have ruined several aspects of the game. I know it's frustrating, but you can't expect everyone to bend around what you're doing. Trolls will exist REGARDLESS, and trying to fight it merely takes away a few of their tools.

I HATE that they changed willow to stop trolling. Trolls will find a way anyway, and rather than use complicated solutions that negatively affect people trying to play the game properly. Here's some ideas:

Don't play on public servers.

Play with people you trust not to troll.

Use server rollback

Don't play on public servers

There's always kicking and banning

Don't play on public servers

TLDR I'm salty because Klei nerfed a bunch of things because of griefing and salt becuse all the topic atre griefing topic on the froum and i asdasdas jsjdo dont want oansdasd and why veryone s topid cant just not plaay with frend on private server

sorry ill stop ranting now

Am not sure if you had read the more recent threads regarding the trolling, which is more than someone burning and destroying bases where you just roll your eyes (and roll back the world). It was about multiple users rendering the game unplayable, including servers with admin and roll back disabled. I have played in private servers and joined friends but the lag in itself can make it unplayable. When I first started playing I didn't have enough friends to play in a private server. Griefing has been around for eons and always will be, and it sucks aspects of the game were changed because of it. But yeah I am a bit angry to be told I should know better and to get over it. I have played about 300 hours now and have experienced most forms of griefing within the game. But this form of trolling concerned me enough to write about it. Also what if I said if you don't like the complaints stay off the forums and have private chat with your friends? If the forums were something you really enjoyed and someone continually blocked you from them you might be pretty annoyed too. Those who are new to the game don't really understand what is going on so they are going to complain. There are always going to be trolls, there are always going to be complaints. If people ignore these things I think Klei will only do things in response to what is being written about and reported as in Willows case.

Yes, I've read the more recent threads; on any given day it's something like half the new content on the board, so there wouldn't be a lot else to read if I didn't. I'm aware of the jerk using multiple accounts to vote-kick and reset, and pretty much all of the other shenanigans. None of these things are an issue on a server with a competent admin, because bans and console rollbacks are a thing. If they have publically open servers and have completely disabled rollbacks, that's a dumb move. And which is less playable? A game where kiting is a bit of a hassle, or a game where just as soon as you've gotten your base all up to snuff and you're waiting Winter out some jerks come along and reset it all to square one?

Didn't tell you to get over it; told you to stop touching the hot stove. If being given good advice makes you angry... sorry.

okay so the problem is that people play on public servers?  i mean world is going to get reset anyway if it goes for long enough a newer player could join in a harsher season die and reset it. case with survival  which most of the problems you stated is based on the survival game mode. That is why there are other modes that wouldn't cause for an earth shattering reset endless and wilderness for example.  Of course this still doesn't stop people from destroying your base but that is to be known now cant really get angry at them  cause that is what they want. you just gotta get past use your knowledge of the game and maybe get them killed or other things. But public isn't that bad just gotta mark good people and not be anywhere obvious.

I play on both, and for sure on public servers, other players, not all of them trolls, can be very annoying. But look at it as an opportunity to practice the game and also to practice the non attachment taught by Zen masters. The world WILL be reset in a day or less, so why get so invested in it?

On the other hand, public servers are a good place to make contact with good players if you don't know anyone personally who plays DST. So they're not worthless. You just have to recognize their limitations.

Why don't you ignore annoying forum topics ?

Also, that's victim blaming.

1. I didn't say anything about annoying topics.

2. I knew that was coming. I'm not telling people who have been sexually assaulted they shouldn't have worn sexy clothes. I'm telling people who presumably want to have a good time playing a video game to stop doing a thing where a good time will almost inevitably be ruined.

The only public server griefing that's currently so catastrophic that it renders the public servers nearly unplayable is the vote system.
Sadly, the lack of any dev response to one of the many topics on this issue doesn't look promising.

I personally play them anyway since all I'm doing then is farming for skins when I don't feel like playing my solo world. Can't touch my solo world. How's that for preventative measures? No one's gonna grief you if no one else is there. You'll never touch the hot stove if you never eat cooked food.

What if we removed the hot stove altogether and took a sledgehammer to it afterwards? Sure, it might be an expensive stove, but if you're a smart consumer, you should have held onto the receipt. I'll buy you a microwave afterwards and we could go out for sundaes, too.

If the hot stove turns out to be a sentient being that wishes destruction upon the world afterwards, we'll throw in a stick of dynamite and drop an anvil (or piano) on it just to be safe. I hate it when stoves try to destroy the world, don't you? Especially the hot ones.

Agree. And the griefers aren't the only ones who are trigger happy when it comes to the vote system.

Man, I'm just worried about what the head toaster could do to the lesser toasters. Rendering them to their base components and all.

What about my one thousand ton weight? What about my safe with another anvil in it? What about my portable black hole?! What about my bear traps?!?!?

Geeze Triple-D, you sure haven't checked off all your ACME boxes. Good thing I'm here!

I thought I understood, but now it appears that we have only ovens to blame...or something.

Yes griefing happens. yes people still like complaining thinking it changes something the more it is said.

No people will not stop playing on unattended servers, because they do make up 90% of all the servers.

I am started to be genuinely baffled by this issue - this recent cycle of griefing and the resulting ongoing complaints and complaints about complaints. This is my first experience of online gaming and an online community. Both Klei and Steam have rules and guidelines regarding the game that in my experience don't appear to be enforced. From what I have read changes were made in response to previous forms of griefing which don't appear to be particularly effective and have ultimately become a tool for griefing. Am interested to know more regarding how changes come about.

I think I had a natural response to the issue in making a complaint or report, only to be suggested nothing is going to happen so don't bother playing public servers or reporting. (am not referring to a specific comment on here). It doesn't make sense to me that hundreds of players would have to adapt their game play because of a select few who like causing disruption for their own amusement. It also seems that with the current voting system people will boot anyone off for any reason they deem fit. Yesterday a player arrived on the server hoping to join in, and being unable to type a response (due to running and trying not to die) they left saying "I guess Don't Starve Together has a bad community after all."

I feel its a pity that its come to a point for someone to feel that way about the game and the Don't Starve community. I would love to see it return to the point where people feel they can play on the public servers without hesitation and distrust. I love the people I have met on the public servers and its where I learnt how to survive the game. I love the aspect of working together. I would love to see that happen here, developers included. Constructive criticism sort of thing, instead of complaints. Buy hey thats my opinion and like my favourite saying goes "opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one" ;)

There was never a point when public servers were not full of distrust, but you had options like basing in remote areas, being picky about who you helped survive, weather pain and telelocator staff to combat the griefing. I used to take griefers as part of the challenge and that was okay because griefers had to work hard to grief me, they couldn't just step in and do it in 3 minutes, and I had tricky but legitimate ways of combating them.

But now the only way to combat them is to make multiple accounts yourself and try to outnumber the griefers.

If we look back at the example of ghosts being able to destroy structures by haunting (completely stupid) Klei only fixed it something like 8 months after the whole community realised it was an issue and made a bunch of threads about it etc. By the time Klei fixed it people had sort of gotten used to it, so I expect Klei WILL fix vote-kicking and world regeneration, but in another 5-6 months and only after people stop complaining about it.

Thank you for your reply regarding Klei (not sure if the caps were for my benefit) but I keep getting suggestions regarding combatting griefers that I haven't exactly asked for and the assumption I am not taking precautions. I already do and consider them part of the game. But the distrust I am talking about feels different from when I first started playing the game and the form of griefing much more disruptive. I don't think rendering servers unplayable is griefing but is something else entirely. I spend more time now trying to work around it and combat it than playing the game itself. And in my attempt to understand it and discuss it anywhere I have been met with exasperation and rudeness.  Like I said its MY experience of the game and am new to online gaming (but not the game itself) and don't know how I am expected to know all this. There is what I would love to see happen and then there is the reality, I know the difference. Starting to get that same sinking feeling writing on here. I no longer appreciate being given instructions about what I should have done/been doing.

"stop playing on unattended public servers, just stop."

If you don't want to be given instructions then why make a post instructing people to not do something? That's kind of hypocritical.

No one likes being told what to do, controlling someone though is different to helping them. No one on this forum would intentionally try and give you bad advice or instructions, if you don't appreciate being given instructions, then don't make posts which will result in said people given you responses that will give you instructions about what you should have done/been doing.

I'm not giving you instructions, I'm stating my opinion in a way that it will come off that way.

I still play Public Servers when the server I play w/ forum members isn't running, I don't want to play Don't Starve To-Get-Her alone, that got boring in the first 45 hours.
