What's the purpose of hatching a smallbird?

Recommended Posts

So, me and my friend were recently playing on a world together. On our way to kill a MacTusk we came across a tallbird egg and decided to steal it. We brought it to our base and I was contemplating what to do with it. I started hatching it, and then put it in a chest (since winter would be a bad time to hatch it). So now I have a hatching tallbird egg sitting in my chest and I don't really know what to do with it. My past attempts at hatching one have all failed. The first time I didn't know that pigs would eat the egg, so one just driveby ate the egg and walked away. The other times its either been freezing or overheating, and when I finally did hatch one it died. So i'd just like some help. What's the point of hatching a tallbird egg? I know it turns into a smallish tallbird that can fight for you, but is it really worth the time and missing out on a tasty tallbird omelette?

Eh, the purpose of hatching the Smallbird is to have, in my opinion, an ally that isn't really worth it. They need to be fed often (When they start chirping relentlessly, Berries preferably.) and will grow up into Tallbirds, turning on you. The best next option is to throw that sucker into a Crock Pot and dig in! Bacon and Eggs, baby!

And the fact that they turn on you makes it all COMPLETELY pointless!  I wish Klei'd fix that...if you have to go to so much work, it should be worth _something_ at the end.  As it is, it seems like such a half-baked, unfinished feature.  Why allow you to raise them at all if you can't domesticate them?

Yes, there are mods for this.  There's "The Tallbird Mod", which is more complicated than I want.  And then there's the old "Domesticate Tallbirds" one for singleplayer, which is the one I _really_ want, but it seems to have vanished off the face of the Earth.

Still, come on, guys.  Why'd you put PART of this mechanic in there and not finish it?  If you raise the thing since birth, it should still see you as "mommy" and should NOT attack you.  (Maybe stay away from you for a while in its "rebellious" Teenbird stage, but that's it.)  It only makes sense.  If you factor in how bloody hard it is to get it to that stage at all (I have yet to NOT loose a smallbird to spiders, myself) it's nowhere near overpowered.

(Interestingly, Maxwell calls them "a failed experiment"--is THIS part of why?)

it's like having your own pet but only it is a annoying pet because of all the whinning

You have to feed to keep it alive and to support all the crying

Better make it as a challenge and gather 3 eggs and kill them after they hatch

you shouldn't be able to domesticate tallbirds, since domestication requires many generations and changes on the genetic level.

you can tame them, however. In singleplayer you could use the smallbird to hunt regular birds, by ordering it to attack them (they wouldn't fly away), and the teenbird will help you in combat, to some extent.

Is that your artwork?  As usual, I am amazed at just HOW insanely good some of the fanart for this game is...

I have _never_ had that many tallbird eggs at once.  Wow.

Last but not least on the off-topic-athon, I just now noticed your signature quote.  That's one of my favourite Discworld lines, I go around saying it all the time!  (I have weird conversations.  : P)

ANYway, back _on_ topic, wouldn't it be cool to have a badass Tallbird by your side, even if only until it gets killed?  Ah well.

(And by "domesticate", I don't mean as in, like with cattle or whatever.  I mean have the ONE still remain loyal to you as an individual 'cos it's imprinted on you.  Actual domestication like you mean would require raising several generations, yes.  The mod is CALLED "Domesticate Tallbirds" but what they really mean is, "don't have this one particular bird I raised from an egg attack me when it grows up, please".)

Nope I'm bad at art XP

it doesn't hurt to give it a try sure raise 12 tallbirds eggs why not?

You can always take the smallbird back to the father and watch him kill his own son.

Another good (but harder strategy) is to raise your teenbird, help him kill his own father and watch him eat the corpse.

Seems legit.

Well, kill, yes.  Eat, no.  Several times I've come by a tallbird nest in the spring that had a sad little morsel next to it.  And I'm like, "Well obviously something happened, but it wasn't the nearby spiders that killed the baby 'cos they would've eaten it!"

...I have no idea. Glitch?  Starvation?  Lightning?  Dunno.  But tallbirds are vegetarian, so...

(Also I assume grown-up Tallbirds are female, since, well, they lay eggs. Some of them may identify as male, but since I don't speak Giant Monster Bird, there's no way to know.)

Tallbirds kill their own kids because their IA forces them attack any creature that isn't another tallbird. Teenbirds can eat meat for some reason. Ironically they're not "Monster" creatures either they drop normal meat. I guess every bird in the game is female then? Just make sure that either the mom or daughter watch the other one die.

It actually appears like Tallbirds do not require mating at all, seeing as tentacles have genitals so the DS world does obey to these rules, and the tallbirds don't even have anything like it. Which makes sense, they're a stitched expriement of Maxwell.

Also how dare you call them giant monster birds? They're clearly TALL Monster Birds. Shame on you.

I just realized Tallbirds are Beefalo Domestication before it was cool. Heh.

Before it actually sorta worked, you mean?  Pretty much.

Teenbirds and Smallbirds work.

Sure, they and tamed beefalos are pretty useless, but cute. So exactly like domesticated beefs.

Frankly, I think small/teenbirds would be fine if the smallbird phase was shorter and the teenbirds required a little less food per day. Teenbirds are faster and hit harder than pigs, don't lose their marbles at dusk, and are easier/more cost effective to heal. If it didn't take so long for them to become teenbirds, those 18 days until they become adults might be worthwhile provided you have the excess resources for it.

Hatch a lot of them and kill them to farm Krampus faster.

Or you can order it to kill rabbits if you're bored.

Otherwise it's not worth it. It needs to be fed constantly, when grown up it's a teeny tiny bit stronger Pigman that doesn't kite (so it basically dies way faster).

And at the end it will start attacking you, so you'll need to kill it. It won't even make a new nest and killing it will grant you regular 2 meats.

So, it's just straight up useless.

Yall make me sick. I'm staying out of this one.

Although, I will admit, tallbirds are horribly broken as-is at the moment.

  • Smallbirds will die if you look at them funny. (pretty much everything in the game 1 shots them, and they are pure face-tankers. It'd be best if they could know what battles to fight and what to run away from...)
  •
  • Teenbirds auto-target tallbirds, even if they aren't hungry. (When they get hungry they will openly attack their teenbird and smallbird brethren to eat them, which is alright, I guess. But why tallbirds when they aren't even hungry?)
  •
  • Tallbirds will automagically attack their own kind if it wasn't raised by them and them alone, meaning if there's a tallfort there's going to be a bloodbath, or if you walk nearby with a pet smallbird the tallbird will actively seek to kill it (Also, reloading the server reloads the smallbirds state, so the tallbird will THEN kill it's own young, which makes the effectiveness of tallbirds actually hatching their young to -29000%)
  •
  • The nests aren't renewable (Nestless tallbirds should make more nests, seeing as the young ones die so commonly and considering someone would actively have to burn their nest down in the first place it doesn't seem overpowered at all)
  •
  • To prove how sadistic Klei is towards tallbirds, it's better to eat a tallbird egg when it's hatching than cooked or raw (Can't this at least lower sanity? Considering you're eating an unborn baby?)
  •
  • Incredibly reliable and easy to make meat farm (It's a bit overpowered. And even though I never do this, I know that they are really good to farm. In fact, the last time I accidentally hit a tallbird, I actually had to put the game aside because I was legitimately feeling queasy and couldn't think straight)

Seriously, Klei? You added this feature just to hate on it yourselves? It's hardly fair, and awfully sadistically evil.
