RabbitsMurderer
Hey everyone, as you all may notice, my account here is very old (Created since 2013), I played the game since they had point for the science machine and biomes where huge circles separated by long roads, but I have to admit, I have been pirating the game all this time. I have had so many countless hours of fun that I never felt with any game, which made me guilty about this. this was the first time I feel like this about a game but this one offered me too much and I didn't give any in return... I know it was around 10$ back then but I couldn't buy it (3rd world problems, family had no online money transition method). But i wanted to buy the game, as soon as I found out that a 3rd party can buy the game for me with my cash money for a cheap price I bought the Mega Pack, it is the very first pirated game I buy and now I have it in my steam library. I also have the Don't Starve beta ribbon or whatever that is that I won't mind if it was removed from my account for this reason. I did participate then in the forums but I didn't really support the developers... That's it. DeputyDeath
Strangely touching. There's nothing wrong with pirating a game if there's a genuine reason for it (well, I say nothing...), but it's nice to hear that you finally managed to buy s copy! I don't really know how to say this without sounding patronising, but good on you! Xavven
It was much easier, morally speaking, to pirate when I was a kid and didn't have a job. But as I got older, I started to see how all the pieces fit together, how the economy and marketplace works, and how stealing makes it worse for everyone. Everything we buy in life, from shoes to gasoline, would be cheaper if A: people didn't steal and B: everyone selling their wares was ethical. And isn't it odd how we spend hundred or thousands on a good computer and then try to save a couple bucks here and there by pirating music or games? Anyway, good on you for coming clean. Let's be honest, if people could pirate a computer, they would definitely be doing that... Asparagus
*sigh* @__@ Well, @RabbitsMurderer has given me strength... Strangely I was asked just last night by @GiddyGuy why my account says that I only have double digits on the time played with my DS... to which, I admitted... The time before that, I had already been playing the game since before the caves addition... the first one I had DL'd was the April-20-2013 update... I spent so much time playing the game, that it was as if my every waking moment was spent playing the game... It was just so much fun... if I could estimate my play time, it would be about 2-3 years equivalent in hours... I am not kidding, I was addicted... Like rabbitmurderer, I live in a 3rd world country with my family where most transactions are done with cold hard cash and we didn't have access to online transactions... and so pirating was rampant... One day, I had trouble with an error in the caves where surfacing would cause the overworld to be in lights out mode... and that was the first time I posted in the forums... apparently it was already fixed and I just hand't downloaded the latest update... I felt so guilty about it too... here I was hobnobbing with Forum Royalty while I had a pirated version of Don't Starve... it felt like I was deceiving people... this kept going until DST started beta... I also had DST... but it was still pirated... Tunggle was a way I could play it with other people... and so the charade continued... at this point, I had felt so guilty that I was considering leaving the forums... but... but it was just so much fun here... I had decided that if I couldn't get a legal version of DS/DST, I would leave forever... but there was no way were getting a credit card anytime soon... some nights I was even kept awake... One day, I steeled myself and just up and asked @ThePreChewedTree if he had a spare key... he gave me one but... I couldn't use it. I was thankful nonetheless... I had only acquired the game after a generous forumer named @applebottom gifted my a copy... for that I am grateful... a while after that, I finally had a way to buy games... and the first game I wanted to buy was Invisible, Inc... it was (is) a great game... this does not redeem my actions but I would like to support Klei for all the joy they have given me... I sincerely apologize to Klei, and the forumers for my past actions and hope you can forgive me... Neu7ral
Sincerely I played DS in pirate versions, started to "it's not a rock" till Reign Of Giants I was playing on pirate version (cuz I had problems with steam dollars) Then I was able to buy it on offer with RoG included then, I was so excited when DST was going to be in closed beta I participated on the closed xD, but the copy came very very late :< BUT I ENJOYED LIKE A CHILD. Also, on shipwrecked, when the DLC appeared on steam, INSTABUY. But I had problems to play it because the DLC wasn't adding it. Serph
I also pirated DS before, that's why steam says i only have 9 hours in singleplayer. In my country taxes are absurd, with the currency difference applied, brand new video games cost around 4x their price on dollar, it's not something most folk can afford. I started lurking the forums and noticed that the community here is really nice and devs are very responsive to players. Normally i don't feel guilty about pirating, but this case was different. I wanted to make a forum account and play DST online but my self concious didn't let me. If anyone look at my steam library will see that i have 18 games. Team Fortress 2 is free and was the game that made me make a steam account. 14 of those i got for free during events (and i don't even play). 1 is a gift from a friend. And the last 2 Are Don't Starve and Don't Starve Together, the only games i ever bought on steam. WillowCrocker
I think it's touching that you liked the game so much that you bought it as soon as it was possible. To me, that's what really counts, and I'm sure the devs appreciate it just as much. LtShinySides
There's nothing that can't be forgiven. That being said, it's lucky that no demon showed up and broke your chests and looted your stuff. AnonymousKoala
My currency kinda sucks, so if there's a game I dont know if I'll like, I pirate it to see if I enjoy it. If I do and can afford it, I'll buy it eventually. Luckily when I picked DS up it was in a massive sale. My point is, I never saw anything wrong with pirating as long as its morally right, and if you can afford the game and enjoy it, you'll buy it. Flare2V
The first version of Don't Starve I played was pirated. Not ashamed to admit. The game was fantastic. Bought it later when it released on steam, purchased a few copies for stream giveaways. Worth every cent. emerphish
I didn't pirate Don't Starve (how do you all do that and still have a functioning computer its so sketchy), but I do have a story about it that I feel like fits in here. I first discovered the game when TheSyndicateProject posted one video of the game in early beta almost 4 years ago. I thought the game was cool, but I was unskilled in the art of online theft and had no money, being a middle schooler. Then a few of my friends got the game, then my best friend's mom was playing it, but I still couldn't buy it because you only find a quarter on the ground every so often. It took me until the update when caves were released to buy the game with every nickel I saved up. When I did get the game, my life was pretty messed up. Messed up enough that I won't talk about it because sad things are sad, and no one needs to be sad. However, this game was an escape. It was a difficult, uncompromising masterpiece of a game that I invested nearly 300 hours in using the family computer. It was something I could do, enjoy, then fail at and be happy that I got to do it again. The point is that this game meant (and still means) something special to me. I know it means something special to many of you as well. With that being said, the fact that you have all bought the game that you previously did not have the means to buy it, but wanted to and did. You still supported the developers. This game is a game worth having, even if it means temporarily compromising your morals. @Asparagus, I almost cried.
