Whenever I hear about someone who enjoys math, I stare at them like "Are you insane?"

I have a friend that's soon getting his major in math.

I still can't understand how he likes to do what he does.

He tried to explain to me some of his major stuff but I just zoned out and understood zero of it.

Math is weird.

I mean, it can be kinda satisfying when you use it to solve an actual problem.  Like in code, for example; when you use division and variables to make a health bar, or trigonometry to set a circular path.  But in school, it's just pointless problem after pointless problem after pointless problem.  It's tedious as hell.

While we're on the subject of education, I actually don't plan on going to collage. My understanding of collage is that it's supposed to be a tool to get any extra education needed for a specific line of work. I, however, have no clue what I want to do, other than settle down and raise some kiddies. I don't want to spend four years sitting in a classroom and the rest of my life paying off debt for an education that I'll probably never use.

If I have to kill time until I figure out what I want to do, I'd rather just get a job. I'd be making money, getting job experience, and making it easier to get hired when I do find what I want to do (as by my understanding you're generally more likely to get hired if you've had previous jobs, as long as you don't have a bad record). Who knows, I may even end up finding what I want to do through just getting a job for it.

Of course, I'm not saying a collage education is useless. My older brother wants to go into game design, and he's taking collage courses to help him get there. I feel like so many people think that everyone needs to go to collage or they're never going to do anything with their lives. That's just not the case. Collage isn't for everyone, and after mulling it over, I don't think it's for me.

Well i did it this way.

First i actually got me a job and did that for like 4 years to finish up my training (in germany you first need to get a proper training to be a certified worker) however when i finished my training i didn't get a reasonable job in my company.

So instead i worked for another half year in 12 hour shifts till the new schoolyear begann and i could do the 11th and 12th class what i needed to go to College.

And now a bit later i'm doing College. The main advantage i see in a college education is that you'r more likely to get higher ranking jobs in a company for example when i'm done with my Bachlore for Automated Systems i will have very good chances to get a job because automated assembly lines are the future of the Industry and people like me are always looked for. However with something like a Master you can easily become a department manager in a company and with that the chances of a promotion are extremly good.

That being said i would never say you should do college right after school because it's a lot better when you looked a bit at the workmarket and found out what you want to do and if you like your Job a lot you might want to do College in that specific field to get better positions with that Job. Also at least here in Germany companies are a lot more willing to take people that got at least a bit of work experience compared to people that just came from college and never worked in shifts and stuff.

I'm probably not going to college either; it's way too expensive, and degrees are dropping in quality anyways.  I'll probably just throw career ideas out there and see what sticks.

Yeah, of course it's probably a bad idea.  Sue me.

Why so much hate on mathematics ;_; What did math(s) ever do to you?

As for collage, I dislike the ones where the original source of the material is still obvious at first glance. The art of mashup is to make bits of old textures into a new and different image.

When it comes to education, the most important thing is to couple it with unique "experiences" or uncommon certificates. Look at it from the employer's perspective: There's plenty of college students to choose from, naturally you'd prefer the few who have worked in your sector already or pursued interests related to your company's specialisation.

EDIT: Do you think "writing mods" counts as "related interests"?

Well i have nothing against Math as a basis however there are a lot of things that i really see no reason in needing for my live again Curve Discussions are something i will probably never need as an Engineer/Electrician cause i know for a fact that i never needed that during my trainee days.

While we're on the subject about education and future plans (also, I don't like math either), I am currently studying at Unitec for certificate in animal care and hope to get a job as a Zookeeper one day. For now, however, people say I should start small and go with vet assistant.

My dream is to become a YouTube animator and make MMD movies for some of my favorite games. Progress in this is rather slow though -_-

That's what I used to think, and it was one of the reasons I chose an engineering degree and avoided math.

Now, I'm realizing that my math classes have been some of my easiest, and the some of most esoteric math I've done (complex numbers,* the impulse "function,"** 2's complement representation***...) was in my engineering classes. Hm.

Spoiler

*e = -1, and all that.

**It's zero everywhere except at the origin, where it's undefined/infinity, and if you integrate it you get 1.

***A binary representation of negative numbers which allows you to just add them (not subtract) and get the right number. Super useful for computers.

What would an engineer use i for? You mean the Square Root of -1 kind of i, right? I thought that's only used to bypass impossible numbers until they can be removed using algebra.

Also, the stock market is still falling, so gold is still rising. Buy gold before it's too late! Also have this triangle badge!

I think i=(-1)1/2 is mostly used by electrical engineers. Sinusoidal signals are apparently pretty important there, and you can use i to manipulate sinusoids, thanks to Euler's formula: e = cos ϕ + i*sin ϕ. So, if you have a sum or product of sinusoids, you can convert that to something involving complex exponentials, simplify it, and then convert it back to something real. This is, in fact, easier than trying to memorize a bunch of trigonometric identities and then apply them.

I'll be one year away from being legally old enough to move out.

AND I STILL DON'T HAVE MY LEARNERS PERMIT

Lucky.

Actually, when I think about it, I don't think I got my licence until I was 17 or 18.

Why lucky? Usually people, older adults mostly, are surprised that I don't have my learners permit by now and tell me that I need to get on that. Which is actually part of why I haven't gotten one yet because part of me keeps going "YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO I'LL GET MY PERMIT WHEN I WANT TO"

Well, I guess it depends on if you like driving or not. I don't; so I consider it lucky if someone else doesn't have their license/permit but has other people drive them around.

Of course, that doesn't stop me from making fun of my college age cousin who still hasn't learned to drive and gets her younger sister to chauffeur her.
