I like the single player style of the game, however, I am curious about multiplayer aspect, some of my friends who also have the game were more hyped about the news than I was when I told them about it, and demanded I play with them, hah!

This better be good. I'm sorry that it may not sound nice, but i never really thought that such a game should be multiplayer it doesn't fit with the whole loneliness theme it was meant to be. Plus the announcement of that whole "the way" thing just being a ad for multiplayer was a really big let down for me. I was expecting something A LOT more crazy or interesting.

Although it does seem like a multiplayer game. I thought about it and i think i'm gonna love this!!!

I really feel sorry for the players who suggested that multiplayer will be implemented and were attacked on these forums along with some quotes citing developers who said "No multiplayer". People cannot believe in everything developers say.

By the way, I can really see how happy can people who wanted multiplayer now be. I just hope players who like singleplayer would not be forced to play multiplayer. Although many people suggested that nobody will force you to play multiplayer, the reality is not so simple. I can imagine that "friends" will force many players to play multiplayer with them.

Jumping off of this post: Please, please don't make multi-player exclusive content that can't be accessed by single-players or have some single-player version offered.

I was very disappointed to see the email sporting the puzzle picture was just to announce multi-player.  One of the reasons I bought and enjoyed this game was that it was so well done as a single-player experience.  It was nice having the confidence that whatever was added would always be focused on that.  I've never cared much for multi-player, so I generally avoid games that have exclusive content for that mode.  There's nothing more annoying than wanting to use or do something, but not have the option to go solo.  I'd really hate to miss out on new craftables, recipes, biomes, etc. just because I prefer that style of play :(

The plan is that things that can be cross modes, will totally be added and tuned for both modes when logically and technically possible. We have zero plans or desire to segregate content that would be awesome to play in both single player and multiplayer.

TO KLEI CREW : GUYS I LOVE YOU !!!

you always have been close of your fans, always listened you community.

i remember the halloween contest you was always open and ready to help us.

video games industrie need more studio like you !!!

i dont find words to say how much i'm so happy by this announcement and how much i love you !!

it's gonna be so cool to be able to develop mods with friends and be able to test them together...

(i think at my bro Afro1967)

KLEI, I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOUUUUUUUUUU !!!!

I've never been interested in multiplayer Don't Starve. It just seemed to rob the game of its uniqueness. But after I tried local multiplayer through a mod, I found it to be okay, but I prefer singleplayer. I never thought Klei would listen to the players. Now, I'm actually excited. It's going exactly how I wanted it to. I had imagined a 2-4 player game, and here it is! All we need now is permanent death. Ban the player from the server on death. If someone leaves, new people can join. But if the game has 4 players, and one dies, the maximum limit of players decreases each time a player dies until only one player is left. When they die, the server can be restarted.

Seeing as how multi player addons for single player games tend to be very buggy, I'm unsure as to how this would turn out. Then again, this isn't a mod. As for the number of player per serve, I think 4 would be enough (all players being different characters). If your going to have more players per world, I would suggest making the AI more intelligent or doing what was done in diablo 2 where the mobs get tougher the more players that are in it

Will character mods work in multiplayer?

I think only if everyone has the same mod.

The plan is that things that can be cross modes, will totally be added and tuned for both modes when logically and technically possible. We have zero plans or desire to segregate content that would be awesome to play in both single player and multiplayer.

Thank you!  I know I'm in the minority in regards to generally disliking multi-player, so it is very nice to hear that the awesome stuff will be availabe for solo play as well =D

Eh, not a fan of multiplayer, usually. I'm not really sure that I'd like it for this game (I get apprehensive about multiplayer for any game, to be honest) , however....

....I am a fan of getting free content, and apparently multiplayer will be free for those of us that already bought the game? At bare minimum, if Klei is providing that content for free for those of us that own the standalone, then I feel like I can at least try it out and give it a chance to see what I'd think of it before deciding whether I think it's a good or bad thing for DS.

I know one or two people I might even play multiplayer within DS, the rare times I do mess around with MP in general.

And if I don't like it, I just won't play it. Seems like a plan to me.

Normally I don't frequent forums, but the multiplayer announcement drew me out of lurk-mode.

SO HAPPY

We asked about this at the PAX Indie Megabooth (after buying Invisible inc of course) and were dismayed when you said it wouldn't happen; so glad you lied to us lol. (we understand)

This literally made our day.

I do not get why people don't want the multiplayer added, I totally understand while making the game though and I always would rather the dev focus resources on single player, but as an aftercompletion expansion? BRING IT ON I want to game with my wife!

On that account, what is to keep me, as a player, from stealing another player's loot (for instance, a freshly slayed Deerclops) and putting it into my chest, which they cannot access? Assuming both player infighting and cross-accessible chests are disabled in the settings.

If I was hosting the server, I would ban your sorry "pig skin". :D

Anyway, you must enjoy other pvp or free for all games. I have been playing Nether lately, and  its terrible when someone kills me for no reason other than to kill me. I don't shoot first because I don't want to kill players like me, but is there any reason for someone instantly killing me for a bottled water and a melee weapon? I guess there is the experience points and kill tracking, but that seems a bit stupid when its my fun being sacrificed for a tally mark.

Trolling will bloom in this game as with every other MP; so I hope this starts off with lots of limitations, then loosens up in a way that wouldn't put trolling into full motion.

So yeah, server rules. I will most likely play privately with maybe a friend or two, and you can go free for all with your friends. We both are satisfied with this, no?

Fun story, I may have not even known when you talked to me at PAX haha. The new hires were quietly working on the prototype for some time as a grand experiment to see what was possible. While I was away with the PAX crew they hit the point where they decided to reveal it as working and Klie had the first office wide test of it. They emailed me while I was in Boston to let me know it was fun as heck and actually being looked at seriously.

We really look forward to the feedback and support for this. Don't Starve as it is right now would not be the same without the great community discussions.

Yes, however dead players should still be able to spectate.
