Derpyderp
Hey everyone ,First post on this site. I decided to make an account to get more information about my current issue. Here's my story. I played on Wilson and was on day 81 I believe. I had the perfect world with enough supplies and gear, meaning that without the current predicament I'm in I would easily reach +200 days. Since I put a meat effigy in my base and I already owned 2 amulets I decided to play a bit more ballsy. So I went exploring. I reached a swamp and after crossing most of it I reached what looked like some sort of reeds farm. So with the brain of a simpleton I immediately ran towards it only to discover that the area was infested with tentacles. Now I've come across my fair share of tentacles (in don't starve ofcourse xD) but this is something that just blew my mind. I didn't come across 1 or 2 of them. There must've been over 20 tentacles cropped together in 20 square feet. I managed to run out of the field, but then I noticed that Chester had been victimized by the hordes of tentacles that would make Cthulu cowar in fear.I asserted the situation and noticed that one of the items Chester had dropped was my beekeeper hat. And being the idiot that I am I decided to go back and get it. I didn't even have time to pick it up and got stunlocked and died. And this meant that all my valuables had been scattered across this field of death. Luckily for me I had touched a touch stone not far from there. So I made my way past all the Merm, tentacles and spider queens to return to the reeds only to be destroyed by these vile creatures once again. And this time I revived all the way across the map back in my base.So first off all, has anyone ever come across one of these fields full of tentacles? And if is so, is there anything that could be done to get my items back? This made me ragequit and the only idea I've come up with since it happened is to go back in wearing the amulets for the sleep aoe and maybe use a one man band to distract the tentacles. I really want to get my items back as otherwise I would have to redo hours of playtime. :/Thanks for any advice in advance. gnarlytreeman
use gunpowder Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/15809-tentacle-fields/#findComment-147805 Share on other sites
A Potato Player
You might have to leave your items for a while. You could try setting up lots of spider eggs nearby and get the tentacles and spiders to fight it out. That would take days, however. Warden
I found the exact same field the other day, I was also tempted by it but I put on a log suit and football helmet before doing so. After getting thrashed and healing myself, I decided to make a couple of ice staffs (I had quite a few blue gems) and lured out a few tentacles so I could freeze them. You could also alternatively make a few bee mines to distract them for a bit while you grab your stuff and get the hell out of there. Orima-Kazooie
yeah the best ourse of action barring a ridiculous use of force that may or may not be available is to bring a ridiculous amount of decoys because the tentacle looks like an aoe effect but is targetedbring pigs, smallbirds, release as many bees as you can and plant spider eggs and swoop in and take stuff while they're distractedObviously that's an exaggeration but you get the point Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/15809-tentacle-fields/#findComment-147846 Share on other sites

Torak
#Welcome !Good luck with that, I'd try and use pigs/spiders to take them out. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/15809-tentacle-fields/#findComment-147911 Share on other sites
Palpetinus
You said you passed spider queens? Lead them over the tentacles. They MAY do something about your problem.Or - i don't even know if that works - be a little ballsy and plant pinecones near the tentacles. Once they're trees, BURN THEM ALL! Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/15809-tentacle-fields/#findComment-147915 Share on other sites
Doctor H. Derp
I ran across that setpiece too, and I knew it was too good to be true. I pensively got close, noticed the tentacles rippling and bulging just around the perimeter and I lol'd as I noped right on out of there.I like the idea of setting up spider eggs along them though. Boar Head
It's kind of a trap, making you go "Reeds!" and then you get mutilated, I almost fell for it in an Adventure game, you could try hiring some pigs, Spider Queens are a good option or you could just burn the reeds and the tentacles with them. cannajan
You'd need a huge pig army, there must be at least 30 (maybe 50) tentacles, I ran through them all on my world and didnt stop! maybe a few spider queens+ a few treeguards? tons of gunpowder?I love to know if someone manages to clear them all? Pink Photon
I saw the reeds and immediately started running, but Admiral Akbar sounded off in my head and I stopped before I was in range of the tentacles.I learned from having a single tentacle standing watch over all my loot that you can stand just out of striking range and auto-target them with a boomerang using spacebar. It's not the most efficient tactic, as it takes almost two whole boomerangs to kill one tentacle, but you can use that method to provide support for your pig army without putting yourself in any risk. Lik3aBlawk
i found an similar setpiece too a couple o' days ago it was a skeleton surrounded by tentacles i ran into it for it but my spider senses were ticklin see for yourself...http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/2162/2013042100006.jpgand it and i killed 2 tencles to get to the stuff i snapped the beefalo helmet before Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/15809-tentacle-fields/#findComment-148261 Share on other sites
asdfghjjkl
well, I would say use spiders, because I believe gunpowder destroys items. You could also make an ice staff, that would work.. idkk, get creative Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/15809-tentacle-fields/#findComment-148267 Share on other sites
cannajan
There are far too many for Ice staff or boomerang! I often get my first spike by kiting a single mob, one hit and out, repeat till dead and you dont get hit, but this set piece requires new tactics, seriously there are 30+ all in a small area, I wouldnt even want to attempt one at the edge of the pack they are so close together getting the loot would be too risky.Killing all the tentacles would be ok its the reeds I want and they will regrow. Dr. Derpenstein
Try waiting for winter and abusing Deerclops'es AOE damage. Afterwards, enjoy a beautiful reed farm. Aurum
I'm with you OP, I had the same horror of running into this trap. It's funny, I was exploring the swamp, finishing off exploring my whole map, when I came along a dead adventurer with a chest beside it. I open it, and find 4 blueprints inside it. I already knew those recipes (and two of them were the same) but it was a neat rare little treasure, and I happily took it. There was one corner of the swamp left, and I literally got this horrible feeling as I walked towards it. I put on my logsuit just in case, as saw 20ish reeds. Like an idiot, I run in, only to get swiped at by 4 or 5 of the buggers. I managed to make it to the edge of the trap before being killed; I got resurrected at my effigy, only to start freezing to death because of winter. Luckily I had pre-built a fire and not placed it (without it, I would've frozen to death). With 18 health and a bit of warmth, I hobbled home, restocked over a few days, and went back and picked all my death loot up. Lesson learned, Maxwell will pay. profile1blah
I think the best thing to do is to wait until deerclops comes and he'll destroy most of them or use treeguardians. . spencer320
Deerclops will take out a few before he's overpowered. Going thru this now. LOL. Led him to the trap. Watched from a small distance as the tentacles took him out. Tried to grab his drops, a couple at a time but got a little greedy and wanted to hurry before night fell. Bad idea. I resurrect not too far from there and try to grab some warm clothes but there was a few left over frogs from a rain like 2 springs before.... Now I'm resurrected quite a distance away, closer to my base but still far enough away to freeze before I get there. We'll see what happens. I lured a Bearger to a reed trap before and he does pretty well. I'd say he took out a quarter of them and ate the monster meat before he was full and went to hibernate. I'd say he took out a quarter of them and ate the monster meat before he was full and went to hibernate.Does Bearger's AOE attack destroy the reeds though? It's too bad I don't have a reed trap on my current map, since I have a Rock Lobster infestation.I bet only ten Rock Lobsters could take out the entire reed trap without much difficulty.Rock Lobsters are pretty much invincible, only the Ancient Guardian and Dragonfly seem to be able to kill them. Unless they hide in their shell, then they can tank anything. goldfish911
Try waiting for winter and abusing Deerclops'es AOE damage. Afterwards, enjoy a beautiful reed farm. (and your stuff) I tried that. I think Deerclops walked in the wrong way though, because the tentacles all killed him almost immediately. Then I tried getting his eyeball. In the corner of the tentacle-filled setpiece.I died. spiritcrusher77
It's a set piece, like that field of grass with several killer bee nests in it, or the chest that you open that makes Winter start early.
