This is bad game design.

I think it's funny. Count this as RNG if you are doing a speedrun, every speedrun has to cope with RNG. Other than that, it is game design I like, a quirk with no pratical functionality that makes the characters feel a little more alive and less "gamey"

No. The bs we have now nurtures addictive disorders because of the dopamine fluctuation of a extremely rudimentary and arbitrary task that requires 0 skill to get right or wrong.

You're gambling at that point and it's worse than having a predictable result for a mundane task.

Lul! Way to go, making from a measly mosquito some mighty horse.

Take this fossil forms' RNG as a minute practical joke, like some Moosling yoinking your Turkey Dinner from pot. "Haha, that rascal!" (*proceeds into murdering all geese on map*) Sure, if uber-efficiency is your ultimate goal, it wins the "REEE!" moment du jour; but in the end games are meant to be entertaining, comical even - more-so DST, known for its whimsical atmosphere.

I've got my own criticisms against speedrunning dst in the first place, but I believe that's a little bit irrelevant. I won't weigh in on that here, but it has more to do with procedural generation in general.

I'm not a speedrunner. I killed fuelweaver late in this run. REALLY late. Died in the first day of autumn year 2.

It's just extremely frustrating to have this persist as a mechanic. Especially in the context of a boss fight.

Again, it adds absolutely nothing to the game, no skill, no great triumph, no song to write about. This is the equivalent of finding hair in your meal at a restaurant. It does not belong.

I don't think false completions has a place in the atrium.

Spoiler

The most common mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States is West Nile virus (WNV). On average, there are 2,400 reported cases each year.  The largest WNV outbreak in the United States occurred in 2021 in Maricopa County, Arizona, sickening 1,715 people, including 125 deaths.

Dengue outbreaks occur in many countries around the world, including in the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Many of these countries are popular destinations for U.S. travelers. In 2019, the United States saw the highest number of travel-associated dengue cases since reporting began in 2010. Additionally, dengue is common in some areas of the United States, such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Another mosquito-borne disease that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas is chikungunya. In 2023, Paraguay experienced a significant outbreak of this mosquito-borne disease, which can cause long-term joint issues and poses a serious threat to young infants and older adults. More than 115,000 cases have been reported since the outbreak began. Travelers have been infected both in Paraguay and in other countries in the region where the outbreak has spread.

You should have chosen a different animal.

why does disliking the game wasting your time = speedrunning

this gets brought up in every single thread these days

I like the good/wrong assembly mechanic :)

The only point that could be annoying is to rebuild it from the base each time it's wrong, when you just don't have luck.

Maybe it could be, instead a rearrange option on the skeleton, that will pick a new random form. Instead of breaking it down, replant, and re-add fossils. ;)

Yeah. I do have hammers. It's unreal that you'd defend something that wastes your time for no reason. Name one good reason why this is good design.

With all the time you wasted complaining about the time you lost you could've hammered a hundred skeletons.

In a game that Klei heavily encourages base building and decorations, you of all people should know why you can construct these in the wrong formation. And if you DON’T know- here’s a probably 4/5 yrs ago photo of one of my bases.

As much as I do agree, I don't think it's too productive to just post the image with no further context. Just kinda leads to people thinking you mean the skeletons themselves and thus to avoidable arguments. Plus I think if this was posted in the feedback subforum it might catch the developers' attention more easily.

That being said, yes please this would be a great change imo. At minimum just having the right formation guaranteed in the atrium would already be pretty nice, but if they let us sweep between the skeletons like with the records they added that'd be pretty much perfect in my eyes. Could even be expanded beyond the fossils for certain things, that'd be neat.

I do think the skeleton being consistent to be the right one on the aitrium circle would be nice (especially since there already is a check for the skeleton to be close enough to the gate to summon the weaver). It’s not the worst thing ever to break and remake it, but it does get rather bothering when you fail that chance multiple times in a row. I could see it being a nice QOL.

i got them wrong many times too. but u can see it went wrong half way of assembling.
also i dont mind being wrong while waiting the cooldown time between locked nightmare cycle to calm cycle so i can go home with less annoyance. usually, assembling took less time than those cycle so i just /dance till the cave light went off.

Okay this is it. I'm making my patch notes:

  • Reassembled Fossil pieces no longer have a chance to be the wrong ones.
  • Now Fossil pieces are six different items: Fossil leg, Fossil arm, Fossil torso, Fossil horn, Fossil hand and Fossil head. To reassemble them, you need exactly two of each (expect torso and head).

HOTFIX change:

  • Placed fossils no longer accepts pieces that it already have.

i think a simple, easy solution would be to allow players to put the heart into wrong skeletons. This way people wont have the mild inconvenience of reassembling the skeleton a dozen times, but people who like the mechanic as a joke/decor can still have their thing.

Lmao what an entilted request.

Also I'm p sure that fossil fragments have a higher chance of making the correct skeleton when placed in the atrium anyways, so no reason to complain

Never in this post has there been a request. A request is not the same as saying how things should be. I did not ever say "Klei, can you please change this?"

It's not worth the time to campaign for this. This is just me pointing how how foolish this "feature" is.

It's not heroic to come to the aid of a company whose pockets you fill.

It's not a great evil to point out flaws. This game isn't perfect but it's one of my all time favorites.

"No reason to complain"

You're out of touch, I'm out of time.

insulting the op for criticizing a pointless mechanic + spreading misinformation, the one two punch I see
