Taking Root, the first content update of the new From Beyond story arc is coming next week, Thursday April 27th at 10am pacific time.

New Features

  • Rifts spewing lunar energy will begin to open in the world, either by defeating the Celestial Champion or by server settings.
  • The first creatures to spew forth are very interested in gardening.
  • New and powerful equipment can be crafted from these extra-planar thralls, with the right crafting station.

A quick note.
As discussed in the most recent roadmap, the new arc is focused on both endgame and early game content. Taking Root is the first major update in this arc and is mainly focused on the entry point of this new end game content.

While we attempt to make sure that every major update is fun on its own (including this one), I wanted to address that this particular update won't be immediately apparent how much it will affect the overall game right away.

While Taking Root introduces some new items, abilities and creatures, the full depth of how this will all play out can not be seen immediately. This means that the balance of these items are focused around upcoming content and not necessarily intended to be direct upgrades to existing content. Since the end game portion of From Beyond is being split into 3 parts, the balance is being designed with that upcoming content in mind.

That doesn't mean we don't want bug reports and feedback, just that you should keep in mind that you don't have the whole picture yet, but it's still good for us to know your thoughts.

Thanks to everybody for all the feedback and bug reports during the beta period. We're still working and reading so keep it coming!

DS10!
We'll also be celebrating 10 years of Don't Starve with some special discounts and surprises for everybody so don't miss it!

We also have a new animated short, some bug fixes and balance changes, and a new streaming item "The Nouveau Club" as well.

See you next Thursday!

Wait, when exactly is the 10 year anniversary of Dont Starve? Dang I can’t believe I’ve been playing this franchise that long. the next game update should be Midsummers Cawnival Though.. right?

(it’s always late May or June)

A thousand thanks for acknowledging everything that's been getting said about the Beta. That alone calms my nerves quite a bit.

That being said, I don't think anyone was doubting that the new content wouldn't be balanced around the upcoming content. Nearly every complaint there is has been about how the new content is completely inconsequential to the content that's already in the game.

Planar damage/defense is a big change that will affect a lot of characters negatively that have their preferred choice of weapons whether it be alarming clock, slingshot, shield of terror, beefalo or anything else and future content having increased resistance towards these damage sources.

Also it is will be very confusing to anyone that doesn't consume information outside of the game to figure these things out.

I don't think that planar danage/defense is doomed to be a fail but it will require a lot of work for it to fit in the game.

Maybe you should of held off on posting that "planar damage is a mistake" topic for a little longer :wilsoalmostangelic:

I would rather prefer the full From Beyond at once.

Yeah the “trust me bro” balancing philosophy is kinda lame in my opinion but whatever. I guess we just gotta hope that it won’t end up botched like the ocean lol.

I think this would be preferable, the community would be able to give better feedback if we can see the full picture. If that isn't possible, I do think that if klei developers just released all their plans for the full update, it would make players less apprehensive and we would be able to understand the reasoning behind the new mechanics and give better response.

I'd say "don't get cocky", but, well

*looks at your PFP*

Bit late for that.

Is the Celestial Champion officially the Alter Guardian now? Is there a reason for the different name?

It's the prefab name (the name as its referred to in the code).

Alter's Guardian is the Celestial Champion

I think I've heard of it but I'm not sure what it is. I'm still a noob to DST anyways so it might be something that I haven't seen yet. If it locks endgame stuff... It must be pretty hard!:wilson_curious:

So you would rather not have any game updates until they are done with the entire arc??? I'm confused, that could be an entire years worth of work

I certainly would. Terraria's been doing those kinds of updates for quite some time as well and nobody seemed to mind. (Besides the very impatient ones.)

major update is fun on it's own

I'm so sorry to be that guy (but apparently it gets me enough to still point it out...) but "fun on it is own" should be "fun on its own". :-?

HYPE! New story arc starting, though!
