Is forge and gorge canon?

Recommended Posts

Shipwrecked and Hamlet are canon. The best explanation for them at the moment is simply differing regions of the constant. Forge and Gorge are canon. The best explanation to my faulty memory, is that they are differing dimensions/worlds that exist linked via some "hub" entered through the ancient gateway down in the atrium. The "hub" part only really exists as a piece of a klei stream from long ago in which they divulged such lore from the mouth, but the ancient gateway bit exists easily accessible enough through this video. I don't see any reason to say that these two events aren't canon anymore, they just aren't really being explored by our cast of survivors at the moment. Maybe never again since it wasn't profitable enough, but, still.

Klei could always close the Gateway arc with a proper cinematic and the addition of Mumsy and BIlly to the Constant.

I've talked multiple times about how easily Gorge's end could be tied to RoT's beggining, that it's kind of funny and sad how much Klei missed that opportunity

It's still available, obviously. It's not written anywhere that the updates have to be released in a linear relation with the timeline.

I think the better question would be since Xbox & PlayStation barely got to experience these contents (or in Xboxes case not at all) Would trying to make those story plots/events Canon even be a worthwhile investment to Klei?

Personally I can careless about Billy/Mumsy or the Great Gnaw because that is content that there isn’t even any Compendium description, or in-game animated cinematic for.

But then again… Funny Monkey Island, Moon Quay Queen, Monkey Curse & Wagstaff Shenanigans just sort of exist.. So who am I to say Forge/Gorge aren’t canon to the games story?

HOWEVER… considering that during those respective events the cast of characters learned new abilities that they don’t currently have, I’m gonna assume it’s a “It Never Happened..” type of Scenario.

I actually got the proof Forge & Gorge are canon: Wickerbottom's quote for the sealed portal (the one in the archives) is "The design is reminiscent of the Gateways we've traversed through before". She can't be talking about the atrium's gateway or Maxwell's door since they look very different and she can't be referring to the portal Maxwell made for her in the short because she's including other survivors ("we've traversed"), this leaves out only the floor gateways of Forge & Gorge!

I think the plot goes like this: the survivors defeat FW and enter the gateway leading to Forge, then they end up in Gorge, then possibly visit other realms but end up circling back to The Costant and the events of RoT start happening.

I think the areas of SW & HAM are canon, but Wilson completed adventure mode before going there so his arrival to them is noncanon (introduced after adventure mode + never shown in alternative media + never referenced). I'd assume it's the same with the rest of the survivors released before them since they seem to have been rallied rather quickly, so only characters released with the DLC would have been there.

true we already have dimension shenanigans with the monkeys, could really just be explained the portal spit them out much later maybe somewhere on a gorge island in the ocean.

I really dislike this approach to it. The ocean shouldn't be just an area on the map where the devs can add 20 tile islands for new content. It should be filled with ocean-themed content or at the very least islands the size of the lunar one.

Anyway, here's how I think the devs should add Mumsy and Billy:

So the canon timeline right now: Forge, Gorge, back to the Constant and RoT begins for some reason. Bad.

Fix? Charlie was sucking up the gateway's power, most likely feeding the shadow power within herself. As the survivors and goats were flying through the black and white spirals of dst dimension travel, she forcefully removed her hand from the gateway and accidentally brought the survivors back to the Constant, but not the goats. Since, because of her, the shadows were more powerful now, the 'moon' had to step up and create the lunar islands. Meanwhile Mumsy and Billy traveled to another dimension, where they met... idk, maybe another sentient species with their own gateway. They traveled through multiple dimensions, picking up various items, blueprints etc along the way until they ended up in Wagstaff's dimesion-prison. With their silverware they helped Wagstaff finish a teleporter, which connected his dimension with the dst Constant. That's how the Goats ended up in the Constnat where they now have their own little setpiece somewhere in the dark forest, trading various gorge items and well as their dimesion-hopping souvenirs to survivors for resources.

I trust Klei to handle telling this via a cinematic.

This would properly conclude the Gateway arc, while also connecting it to RoT's beginning, explaining why the 'moon' created the lunar islands and showcasing how Wagstaff was able to connect to the main Constant, in an ironic fashion, of it being the result of Charlie's/Their plans. Klei could also have some fun in the 'Mumsy and Billy travel through dimensions' bit and showcase how vast the ds/t universe could be.

I see new stuff like the Unnatural Portal on Moon Quay Island spewing resources from another Dimension, & I wonder what would happen if we could “Jump into” that portal ourselves- Will it take us to a world where these resources originate from??

if Funny Monkey Island can exist because resources are spewing out of an unnatural portal, couldn’t Gorge/Forge content be spit out/be visited in the same way?

they followed us through the gateway in the gorge, they just didn't follow us into the constant. they probably went out someplace else in the hub, if we're going by old lore.

Sadly, the unnatural portal is specifically described to be one-way only. stuff can come out, not come in. Gorge/Forge content, could, maybe, in theory come into the constant, but we wouldnt be able to go there.

The hub is mentioned by Battlemaster Pugna who implies that is where the Nightmare Throne is located.

  • "Know this, Gatekeepers:"
  • "Once you are dead, we will activate the Gateway."
  • "We'll return to the hub and destroy the Throne."

oh, thank you for pointing that out!! I've always been so iffy about the hub thing since I thought it only existed through word of mouth. This gives me a decent amount of peace of mind.

If you get the goats, then piptna and Sammy are with them.I like the idea more that they took their friends with them and did not leave them to fend for themselves alone

Wanda admits she doesn't remember the events cause she wasn't released during them but neither was Wortox making him a blatant liar which I find really funny.

Warly's quote is "It's nice to be alive and safe", which suggests he was there too. Maybe Wortox was there and it's just that Wanda doesn't remember (wouldn't be the first time she forgets about something important).

Anyway, I hope they don't use it as an excuse to not release the forge skins for the missing characters. It's like my third favorite collection just bellow survivor and masquerade.

Ahaha yeah, I was saying that kinda jokingly, I thought it was a funny quote.
I imagine lorewise it's very possible they were there, but from a meta perspective it's fun to jab at them not being released during that time.

Additionally I doubt they'd use that as a cop-out for not giving them event skins, Warly got a Gorge/Victorian skin for example!
And Klei's not the type to leave a skinset unfinished, even if it does take them a while to finish them.

The way I always thought about it is that Shipwrecked and Hamlet canonically exist in the world of DST, but the Singleplayer experience of traveling through them is non-canon. Both Shipwrecked and Hamlet are important places that the shadow creatures attacked to steal resources from, similar to how they attacked the ancients in the constant.

I think the timeline is something like this:

Shipwrecked existed before most other areas, or it was one of the first places the Shadows destroyed. Pugna may possibly be from this time period, the Forge has a volcanic theme to it and the skins often reference the power of lava blessing them.

Much of its abyssal and aquatic themes were taken from Shipwrecked, possibly Dreadstone as well with the new Wilson refresh

The Shadows attack the ancients and destroy their civilization

Maxwell is placed on the throne

The main story of Singleplayer happens

DST ANR happens

The team defeats the Ancient Fuelweaver.

They access the ancient gateway, and go into the Forge and the Gorge, realizing that the history and stakes of what they went through are much bigger than they thought.

Given purpose, they search for a way to combat the shadows.

They find the Ancient Archives, and Arcane Knowledge is distilled into their brains

Using their new arcane knowledge and the power of lunar energy, they will eventually combine their efforts to create the Iron Hulks from Hamlet. Their purpose will be as a weapon of war against them. Take note that the robots will instinctively find shadow creatures and attack then, and activate specifically when the aporkalypse begins as if they wake up when they know they need to fight.

For some reason, they are going to lose this fight. Hamlet in Singleplayer shows that a great battle took place, but the shadows are still strong and the apocalypse is night. Perhaps Wilson will become the ancient herald during this time, idk.

Wanda, knowing this ahead of time, travels back to various points in time in the constant to hopefully guide the team into doing this right this time.
