Do you have sensory sensitivities to some of the sounds in DST?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm a ND player with extreme misophonia, and I wanted to reach out to anyone else out there with sensory issues who may be affected by some of the repetitive noises in DST. A few years ago, I got to a point where I couldn't handle listening to the "dink" sound that plays every time you pick something up, so I made a mod called Sweet Silence to silence it. Now it silences most of the crafting and crafting machine sounds, like the "ching" sound that plays whenever you approach a machine, the sound that plays when you finish crafting something, the idle sounds the crafting machines make, the bell sound that plays when you have enough mats for a recipe, and all of the clicking sounds in the UI.

If you have sensory issues, particularly sound sensitivity, this is a huge QOL improvement. As much as I love Don't Starve/DST, those sounds made me absolutely miserable. So if you're like me, look for Sweet Silence in the workshop.

There's also another mod called Idea Testing that silences some other things like flies buzzing on manure, rabbits screaming, and stuff like that. Also really great.

Hope this helps someone out there!

I do ! And I've done pretty much exactly the same to deal with my conditions. But I keep asking for more audio settings for the game as some really annoy me (to say the very least) as sometimes I forget to enable my mods, UI ones can be highly repetitive and loud, same goes for some creatures ones, but well, if you want to mute / lower these with current configuration, you loose pretty much the whole audio of the game, that's messed up. If I couldn't have that kind of mod I think I simply couldn't play this game with headsets.

DST should take example of some games like Minecraft and Satisfactory, to mention only the ones I play but there's others, these are games who have many audio settings, for the players, the environments, creatures, ui, music and more.

This is what I was talking about just recently after the last major update! The sound of Lavoproof net skin! And Lucy, a little. If someone can make me a mod to turn them off (or explain how I can do it myself), I will be infinitely grateful! In the case of the net, either return the base sound, or use the sound that was there before bugfix. The one used for the frog net. I think it can be configured locally and probably it isn't strictly prohibited, since it doesn't give me a skin that I don't own? It's just the sound?

Insanity noises give me headaches and the insanity filter doesn't help either. Cave noises too I do not vibe with.

The insanity noises and filter mods are easy to find and cave noises I can at least tolerate.

I believe Idea Testing can turn those off for ya

Same, I have to mute the instant I disconnect because the main menu music is really upsetting. But I like the in game music, so I just mute when I'm on the main menu.

the only sound that i realy hate is wendy talkin, that hight pitch is ear destroying

I wish I was better at making mods so I could make a settings menu the way that Idea Testing has so that people can choose to disable virtually any sound in the game. As it is I'm working with a very old mod made by Cheerio for Don't Starve single player. Maybe one day I'll try expanding on Idea Testing.

I've been desensitized to sounds through sheer repetition though some I am very fond of, only one that annoys me is Wolfgang when he shrinks.

I'm jealous.. it just gets worse for me the more times I hear something.

I also don't have any condition that I'm aware of, but a few of the sounds in the game bother me: the flies around manure when it's on the ground, which I eliminate by keeping it in a chest, and the squeak of the think tank when you're near it, which I minimize by building it a short distance away from my camp so that it's not squeaking constantly. The endless drone of the florid postern also bothers me enough that I never build my camp near it.

That said, these sounds don't bother me in short bursts, so I wouldn't want to remove them from the game entirely. It's only when they're constantly in my camp that they start to irritate me.

The sound fx when something gets hammered, it feels uncomfortably loud and forces me to lower the volume before I start hammering structures. I do wish it was quiet back like in DS.

If I was a real mod maker, I would be happy to make a fully fleshed out mod that would allow people to disable or change the volume of individual sounds. Alas, all I can do is mute them entirely.

GARDENING MUSIC GARDENING MUSIC GARDENING MUSIC

The complaints make me think they should probably ask the composer to make four or five alternatives and maybe a six secret track so gardening can be least annoying in gameplay?

It's not terribly hard to re-map sounds... Anyone who would like to try it, look up Cheerio's sound mod tutorial. You can use whatever sounds you want.

Though idk if music is on the list bc there's a separate menu setting for it.

It's more of the fact I've had it drown out boss music simply because I walked on the damn plot.  I've had it play for an ENTIRE DAY because I picked 3 carrots.  It's a looping or priority issue.

This is another sound mod tutorial that's really easy to follow.
