Wurt Likes Honey

Recommended Posts

Today I came to talk about something that I imagine is not popular and that may not please many Wurt players. Something that has been bothering me for a while now is the lack of meatless ways of healing during winter: Butterflies stop appearing, bees stop producing honey, blue mushrooms can no longer be grown in their beds and berries don't grow. .
The only form of healing he has in battle is the famous cultivation of potatoes, but it's kind of unfair that Wurt only has that form available while other characters with dietary restrictions have access to pierogue and surf and turf, all winter long.
So my idea is to make the merm king also supply honey to wurt in exchange for his fish, this makes sense since we know that Wurt in the story likes sweets and the merm king giving honey would make a reference to that.

that is how downsides work

you can also store birchnut seeds in a fridge, they last very long if arent cooked, to make trail mix in winter

you can haevest and chop blue mushrooms in the caves

you can craft salves

you have merm followers that reduces the damage you take by making the fights shorter

In all honestly just harvesting your honey before winter would be 1000% more efficient than giving away some fish that takes more time to get and would be quite useful in cooking for other players.

Also banana bush in winter :skull:

Theoretically Wurt players will give the fish to the merm king with honey or without honey, so I don't think it's up to someone who hasn't caught the fish to decide what should be done with it, don't you think?

Since banana bushes grow during winter and all you need is one banana and three ice for 30 hp healing when ice is plentiful you should be fine

I agree, but banana bushes are not such a trivial thing to get and whether or not meat recipes are very easy to make, so much so that Wigfrid, who only eats meat recipes, has the best recipes for sanity, hunger and life in the world. game, with the exception of royal jelly which is not something the wurt player can get before spring (my record was the 37th) nor mass produce.

You can still grow em in caves...

Also you can make healing salves, tents and gather blue mushrooms in caves.

I think you misunderstood, tents are good, but you can't enter a tent while you're in the middle of boss fights. And I've already considered growing mushrooms in caves, but it proves to be unfeasible as it forces the player to set up bases in the cave to keep the pieces loaded, but I'd love for that to be an option.

Your opinion is probably the fairest on this topic, you're right when you say that this is a disadvantage, because other than that I can't imagine another flaw that wurt could have. For me it could go on like this if other characters in the game weren't unbalancedly unfair, having healing, teleporting, high damage, even before the first winter... you get the idea...

My reply was already stated: be creative, there are many more ways to heal in DST.

Of all the opinions yours was the one that I didn't care about the least, because the objective of the game is to give possible possibilities of different ways to survive and the purpose of this topic is just to create one more, because this is by no means a problem for me . I already did dragon fruit crops on the 12th, because I usually find the moon island on the 6th and kill some transformed salamanders that will drop the fruit I give the bird. I've done mosquito and spider farms for healing and I've done giant monoculture potato plantations before winter, which is something very easy to do since I can usually do the merm king on the 13th.

You have clearly not interacted with Wurt mains.

They are like vegans telling you they are vegan. They will shower you in vegetarian trivia.

At the end of the day good Wurt players are just more creative than us, and we cannot admit it.

Yes probably not, I have 1000 hours of playtime with the doll, but I think I'm missing that, I apologize.

If she paired with Ms. Wicker, they can easily kill bee queen before first winter via tentacle trap. Easy and cheap heal

Yours is a little specific, but it has two problems, that to follow this wurt strategy will depend on another person and it is not possible to kill the queen bee directly, since it takes 20 days to come back to life.

Tents and healing salves exist....

True, they exist, but I don't see anyone going to solar chiefs with tents and ointments.

Guess what, Wormwood can't heal from any meal. Improvise, adapt, overcome.

True and I think this is unfair, I even made another topic about Wormwood and dressings.

For all:

And guys I don't know what you guys have in mind, but just suggest adding honey to the merm king exchanges. This is by no means the end of the world, but it does create the possibility of dressing up in winter, not just for Wurt but for Wormwood. And it makes sense why the merm king of the thing to Wurt that he knows she likes, an example being toys (Wurt is a child). Giving honey, being that in the story and in the animation wurt likes sweets, doesn't that make sense?

I mean it’s not bad, but it would sort of encourage wurt players to never craft bee boxes.
As it was stated above in other replies, it’s also somewhat of an overkill, besides all the healing options available (for me it’s mostly harvesting natural blue shrooms or growing them in a cave) once I get 20 warrior merms built I have way more jellybeans that I can ever use too, and I can get to that number in about a year of work, so you spend just one or maybe 2 winters without them really.

well, having that perks before winter for that character is fair since only veterana can achieve that, if that character is op then wurt is simply free win

Trade bottles with Pearl if you need a honey source in winter I guess ? Make senses at least for her as she has bees and they do produce, but the merms have nothing to do any honey... they're not gonna invent it just because the little kid of the village ate a lollipop one day. If you suggested something like to improve the king trade from his "village" surroundings (aka bee box = honey, and maybe a few other things), well that would sound more inviting and thoughtful of a suggestion but this is just meh in the state you describe it so that's more what I think the others contested so far.

No, not really. I mean by this merm king doesn't look like someone who likes honey and doesn't look like owner of apiary (I dont get the seeds as well... maybe he spits them from food...). But there might be other things that might more fit "sea" trades like small chance for whole bull kelp (which would make another way to renew these), salt and cutter shell caps (personally I am never encouraged to fight these, while you can bring army of merms on boat to sea, its still kind of space issue).

Even when I tried to play as Wurt in 2019 and once more in 2020 (before RWYS (less grindy crops), banana bushes (convenient bananas), crossover with Terraria (frozen banana daikiri) and before Waterlogged (figatoni, buff to oars) were introduced) never had I any problems with healing (in any season), and at that time I had something around 1500 hours in DST (+ not that much experience compared to average veteran, I had troubles rushing stuff and killing Bee Queen in those days). I didn't appreciate character, but that is another story, and healing had nothing to do with that.

In 2019 I found butterfly wings and butter muffins be enough for my daily healing needs for all seasons, and I never found myself in need to use blue caps (I still don't share that worship of raw blue caps when there are much better healing options). For winter I just stored in ice box some butterfly wings/butter muffins (latter has decent spoilage time, and that was enough to last through default-length winter), so basically I never really lost non-winter healing options due to getting maximum out of spoilage mechanic (I just cooked wings into muffins right before they spoil). Occasional healing from roasted (juicy) berries and fist full of jam, as well as roasted carrots helped too.

In that same 2019 for bossfights I discovered the virtue of trail mix, and a bit later (with bundle wraps aid) I completely changed my opinion about flower salad - from "meh, spoils too fast and is inconvenient to get" to "best healing rate for intensive tanking, convenient to mass-produce healing food if production is planned well". What did it have to do with winter? Storing uncooked birchnuts for winter and picking berries from bushes only when I need them ensured I had trail mix available even in winter, planning boss fights for summer/early autumn was the way I got maximum out of flower salad, and bundling trail mix/flower salad once I had bundle wrap recipe ensured I didn't have to worry about healing anymore even in winter.

That being said, there are also jellybeans, but due to personal reasons I despise jellybeans now and had no respect for them in the past, even though I'm aware of their usefullness and even though in the past I took much more damage from daily activities, as well as didn't tame beefalos (which take melee damage instead of player and heal over time naturally). I learned the game in a way to not count on boss loot to survive, and I don't like farming otherwise epic bosses, but I admit that with established merm army jellybeans can take care of all healing needs of player; it is like that now and was like that in the past, and Wurt has more options than majority of other characters when it comes to farming Bee Queen (merm army).

I didn't even have to rely on honey for healing, even in first winter, although one can get more than enough by clearing killer bee biome or rushing some bee boxes + harvesting them several times before winter. By they way, value of honey from healing comes either from crock pot dishes - honey ham and honey nuggets, - or from eating it raw if there is essentially unlimited supply of it. Wurt can't use honey ham/nuggets to restore hp anyway, and making honey unlimited by trading with merm king just feels wrong, especially if that would be available in first winter (for lore and balance reasons). Otherwise if merm king gave too few honey to be viable option, there is no need to implement this feature from balance point of view, and it's anti-thematic anyway.

Now - in 2022 - Wurt got several new options for both daily healing and bossfights. RWYS crops, mushrooms (natural and from planters in the caves) and banana bushes were already mentioned, but I would like to note even more options. One could rush lunar island for stone fruit bushes (rushing lunar island and sailing in general became less resource demanding after Waterlogged's buff to oars), and even though typically players (especially Wurt players) eat stone fruits to restore hunger points, a lot of them consumed in cooked form restore decent amount of hp, much like honey or lichen (low spoilage time can be mitigated by mining the thing only on demand instead of doing it in advance). One can also bring lunar trees from lunar island, which can be chopped any time (including winter) for moon moth wings and butter muffins. One can go to the caves (in late autumn) and farm some bananas in old-fashioned way - by killing monkeys and/or harvesting unpicked banana trees, - and then storing them for banana daikiri/banana pop much like burchnuts for trail mix. Finally, one could grow knobby tree nuts into giant trees and use figs for figatoni: even though spoilage time is quite low (6 days), it doesn't matter if player uses it right away to heal at base + all ingredients can be harvested completely fresh right before cooking, so that's 3 days to use it outside of base (although realistically it's not an option for 1st winter, at least on default settings with autumn start). Moreover, things like bundle wraps and insulated pack are very helpful as well (although latter one is also for 2nd winter, unless one is lucky with Klaus). And of couse one can use historically older options mentioned earlier.

Imagine being able to heal by sleeping.

On a serious note, what meatless healing dish would honey even provide? Preparation is key - pierogi-enjoyers also nees veggies for it in Winter. Stash birchnuts for trailmix. Grow winter veggies like potato, garlic and asparagus and make creamy puree and asparagus soup.

Butter Muffins are your friend as Wurt early game. Burn some trees, smash some pig houses, collect some twigs. Set up a pair of crock pots. It's a recipe that lasts a long time, gives 50 hunger to Wurt and 20 healing. The butterflies can also be eaten raw for 8 health and are quite easy to kill when you get used to it.

Roasted Carrots heal for 3. It's fairly easy to accumulate a stack of them in the caves. Smash rabbit hutches, and craft a fur roll. Three full heals on demand. Don't forget you can always sleep in the caves at any time of day.

Kill spiders and smash spider nests until you have 6 silk. A tent will take care your healing needs for a while, especially when the beta comes out and buffs tent usage. Save the glands, and craft healing salves. A torch and some grass or twigs provides the ashes.

There's also the obvious farming. Wurt really enjoys dragon fruit. Until you accumulate enough of those, the tomato/potato combo will handle all your healing needs. Make sure to cook and eat pomegranates and eggplants since they provide 20 health, but are otherwise inferior.

All of these except butterflies are available in winter, and like mentioned before, butter muffins will last throughout winter in an ice box.

Wurt has some downsides that are most apparent early game. She's basically a vegetarian Wilson for the most part. But once you overcome these obstacles, she becomes one of the strongest survivors.

You should really consider non-food healing items. For one, bat bat is honestly quite incredible, each one restoring 510 hp without the bother of spoilage.

Bat wings can farm themselves if you place a bunny hutch next to an open sinkhole.

Chester abuse!
