Main continent making it hard to traverse the entire ocean

Recommended Posts

Good evening. I love the ocean very much! I love almost all of the content it has. But something that occasionally gets in the way of my enjoyment of it is that the way that the map generates nowadays, it is fairly common for the main continent to be made in such a way that there is a tiny little canal to get from what is essentially two different oceans.

This is what I mean...! The worldgen is a bit modified in this generation, but this kind of thing still happens without any modification.

My main gameplay on the ocean tends to be sailing/paddling from treasure to treasure, so having such little leeway with which to traverse the two sides of the ocean can kind of suck, and having two different boats for each side of the world is a bit sad too. I'd like it if the world couldn't generate in such a way that the main continent is so close to the edge of the world, maybe  the ocean would be made bigger in such a scenario?

Id be fine with just a simple way to move boats from place to place.

Maybe a structure that can be built on docks. Pays a few rations and you can teleport from dock to dock around your world.

The tiny passages are annoying but because it takes so long to sail around the main continent that usually means I just end up making multiple empty boats.

You know what would be also awesome?

Sailing to the edge of the world would pop you out at the opposite side.

Like so for example:

Of course your boat would be heavily damaged from that "warp" and in need of repairs as if you would normally hit the the Ocean border.

It would make exploring ocean a lot less tedious.

Hopefully Klei takes into consideration this and introduces something similar to the fog or bermuda triangles from shipwreck

Fog would be very fitting! Klei, WE NEED this. It will make the ocean content much less teidious! Epecially with how the world generates like OP explains.

I can't see how the electric isololies would work however.

You should be able to go off the edge of the map you zee your character sail off far away from the main land and saying a qoute, then you see a loading screen showing you the survivors little adventure off the mainland, similar to world gen loading screen without the shadow hand, after some time the survivor would come back and say one of 5 qoute depending on how the trip goes ( horrible, bad, fine, good, great ) with some resouce missing or gain and some stats change depending on how the trip goes and maybe they even got souvenir trinket that can only be obtain by going off the edge, pig king will give more gold to these trinkets, this would be the perfect oppotunity for some new trinkets since we haven't had those thing in a while.

Because the New World was mostly bugs, dense forests and was highly cracked with water streams and small lakes, the European explorers were forced to use the ways of the natives to go deeper into the land. In between bodies of water, they used to portage their gears and canoe; trecherous but the only way around at the time.

Keyword there was "portage" :P . I would love to see small canoe boats you can portage from one small end to another (suspicious marble style). No shenenigans, no sail, just you, your backpack with bundled food and a nice white oar made of driftwood. You go back to the shore to have a campfire, you live off the land.

I really think there is a place for this in DST

I was thinking of something similar, though a bit more specific.

Basically the electric isosceles from shipwrecked, but player made. Maybe even involving gnarwail horns in some way in order to activate so it's not entirely "free" so to speak once its set up.

I got this!

The electric isosceles from Shipwrecked, but you have to draw it yourself and if it doesn't have two sides of the exact same length when you are done it destroys your boat and deletes all the items in it.

What if it has 3 sides of the same length

the new ocean content makes me like the archipielago mod much more, now that we have grass boats i see no reason for that not to be a reliable option and for the gaps between lands instead of rivers that barely fit a boat to be actual canals

I think the main problem here is that DST mainland still have old generation system more or less, and devs then didnt had an ocean content idea in mind.

Thats the problem, mainland generation should be reworked.

Ocean now actually are intresting to explore and play in it, too!

But again, no matter how good ocean become, you still, in fact, sailing in circle.  There is almost no free space! Well at least thats how I feel.

I really do wish we had archipelago or island based biomes in world setting - for those who find ocean content good, but not enough!

Even shipwrecked (a dlc seemingly based entirely on the ocean) was in fact NOT actually ocean content- the heart & core of shipwrecked actually involved sailing around from land biome to land biome to gather resources to repair/upgrade your boat and gather resources needed to survive like food, armor & weaponry.

In DST however, most of its ocean content takes place on the actual ocean itself, except for one or two small islands- Pearls Hermit Home, Lunar Island, & now Moon Quay Island.

would waste time and make it unfun, the point of going through the fog or whatever is to move to the other side of the map without losing much, so just durability at most, otherwise it would seem like you're being punished for trying to use the same boat all the time, which wouldn't be good for the ocean content as is. (would deter people from doing ocean content even if they don't plan to use the fog or the waves at the edge of the map)

I dream of Archipelago worldgen option to be implemented into the game.

For now mods will suffice i guess..

Could you link a mod to an archipelago or similar world gen option? I can't find any.

with this one you can disconect biomes from the mainland

I think the worldgen would do really well with some shallow river banks that you can both walk and row on. Even if your world doesn't have these super narrow passage ways, I still often think it's a shame you can only sail "around" it. And that for me already ruins the fun of sailing to a great degree. Would be lovely to just be able to sail through it in some spots.

I'd be down if we were be able to dig canals around the continent just for boats to pass. Then again, that'd make a new problem for mainlanders xd

That sounds like my kinda thing, screw mainlanders, we're splitting up this continent!
