Why is crafting system completely remover

Recommended Posts

I've been skeptical of the new crafting UI. After playing around with it for a little, the new UI *can* be more efficient/better than the existing one *if* you set it up to your optimal playstyle (customize your favorites & quick access column). While it is annoying that you will have to set this up each time you play a new world, if you play past winter, it should generally be worth it. I saw nothing wrong with the existing crafting methodology, and it will take a little time to get used to the new one. That said, I see this as something akin to the 2nd rework of wolfie at the beta release - it's something you can work with that will probably get some minor tweaks later.

As far as the "making it easier to add new future items", I'm a bit skeptical about this. New craftable items generally fall into 3 categories:

1. Inferior to items that already exist - no one will use it (ie. no one even will care where it is in the menu)

2. On par with items that already exist (ex. eye mask of terror) - some people will adopt it and use it, others will continue to be fine without even knowing that it exists

3. Superior to items that already exist (ex. wanda's clock) - high adoption rate, people will want to use it. But these items are incredibly rare because they will just serve to make the game even easier.

There is one important caveat. If there is new content introduced that introduces a completely new unique biome or mechanic (ex. thirst! [lol], space travel, scuba diving, etc.) there will understandably need to be a completely new set of items that do not fall in any of the categories mentioned prior. Is it possible? Who knows.

The new UI is great - a lot of people are just scared of change and the fears make them think its worse than it is.  This is a pretty common pattern when things change, but as someone who's used the new UI - I can't wait for it to arrive!!!!

All I’m wanting to find out is how it works using an Xbox Controller, the old UI was simple enough.. but let’s see if this new one has been adopted to the best of their capabilities to an Xbox Controller.

Personally I still want that Weapon Wheel for quick access to my favorites crafts, but I’ve also yet to try the new UI out as it’s not out of Beta yet: For all I know the way it works could actually end up being faster then the Weapon Wheel.

Guess I’ll see for myself in 2 & 1/2 days.

Hm, I haven't tried it on controller yet sry.  I believe they said you can move your character while navigating it, which was my biggest painpoint for console.  I'll have to try it though.

Well... maybe game was in general not good enough (boring or something else) and you would quit anyway? One thing is (almost) never a reason to quit game. Especially if your game wasn't on beta... But I am just guessing, it's your choice, if you really don't like it I cannot help you. u_u

Imo we needed an upgrade to crafting menu. Makes easier to find things, has favourite tab (that saves a lot of time) anf better works with mods (if they are updated...)

in my experience when games are force to do these type of changes, they are willing to lose some players if it means their new system is more intuitive and solve coding problems, the old menu was working when there were few recipes, but you can tell they had to work around it way too hard, and i believe the only reason the make things like pseudo science machine recipes and lunar altar stuff work only when you are around it, is because of the limitations, granted the idea is nice and make the items more important, but the reason remains

the new menu allow them to add as many recipes as they want without that much risk of it getting difficult to find what you need

many people might question "why not give us the option to use the old one as a setting?" because that would create more problems than what the new system is solving, they would have to code each new stuff twice just to ensure it also works with the old model, they have to take a bold statement and do the change even if it cost them some players i guess

This. It's obviously not "perfect"(But what is?) but I believe this new UI is better for players, the game and opens up new possibilities with crafting that the older system was holding back from.

there are some easy suggestions to make it a lot better like cutting down on search filter bloat and not putting the randomness of items in tabs because it sort of relates to it

I'm an Eye mask of terror addict. It's not on par, it's so much better than football helmet - saves two slots, saves resources. It's one of the best things they lately added to the game.

Yes, controller is very nice in the new UI. I rarely play with controller so navigating is a little iffy to me but this is honestly way better and faster.

ok thanks for sharing. glad someone likes it.

I really like klei’s choice to sort of “rip off the bandaid” (idk if that’s the right way to say it). It certainly is a big adjustment and will require some getting used to, but I assure you the change is for the better, even if you need to leave your comfort zone for a bit as you relearn it. Give it a few weeks and most people will regret complaining about the new UI and agree it’s better than the old one, I think.

I haven't left the beta branch since it started even though I mostly play on Klei servers which the beta branch lacks. I can't go back to the old UI!

When I first saw the picture they teased it with I was worried since it looked so big, but once I actually started using it it wasn't nearly as obtrusive as the picture made it seem. People really just need to try the new UI, and not dismiss it before it's even out.

ok.  i will try it again

you cant blame me for being sceptical , there's been a lot of hullulaboo around this update and i am just choosing where to go following this recent update.

Yeah, sorry buddy lol. Hang in there. I don't know why so many people are dog piling you in rude and condescending ways for having a very understandable response to this change. Long time players probably have some button presses / mouse scrolls from the old UI unconsciously ingrained into them, and this change will be a difficult thing to adjust to. Is it really that offensive to request an option for the classic UI? I don't think so. Just a shred of empathy from most people in this thread could have went a long way in them understanding your issue here. Like I said, don't really see a reason for it not being an option. If its some kind of code issue, fair enough, I guess, but still your problem with the update here is valid.

This answers most of my concerns really lol
if you have been playing the game since strange new powers you have lots of things ingrained in muscle memory.
you know where to click and how far specific items are.
When moving around most things are only crafted once.  or twice  when walking around its just maybe fight stuff or light early game.
I havent touched it yet since most mods don't work in beta and im playing uncomprimsing mode atm for streaming

One more day (atm of current post) till this new Crafting UI will be out on live servers - and only then we'll see the initial impact it has on player-base in full magnitude. I expect Steam forums, and especially the update's announcement there, to be another proverbial "dumpster fire". I won't be surprised if it will not be received in kind given what Discord discussions I've witnessed. Even after testing it in Beta for some time I for one still can't bring myself to fancying the revamp. My money's on future mods tweaking it either into a more old format (1 vertical line scroll-centric) or adding more than 9 slots (scroll-based too) for Quick-Access Favorite crafts menu.

while i do think it could be better it isn't something absolutely horrendous and from kleicord the reaction seems mostly positive

Mostly positive isn't a sure win when most statements include "...is ok/good, but...". Another interesting aspect I picked upon: how different are regulars on these KLei forums and "official" discord vs random discords and Steam comments/discussions. Probably is not a coincidence here have aggregated especially fans with quite the propensity for apologetic judgments, while in run-of-the-mill chats expressed assessments are far from flattering in general. Food for thoughts.

while i get the concerns over muscle memory, and i think it would be reasonable if this was a physics change in a platformer or something... i promise you that a crafting menu that looks good and works well is going to feel much MUCH better than a wonky one that youve memorized where to scroll to in to get to bundling wraps. it only took me like 20 (in-game) days of playtime and im already at the point where i cant go back to the old UI because the new one is just so convenient and nice (especially for modded gameplay!! i can actually find new items now)

I don't think anyone is going to actually make a mod of old style.  The quick crafts are the genius front end that makes the full interface that could potentially obstruct the screen work.  Anyone who needs to have certain crafts at their fingertips can, the old system is actually a step backwards from these.  Sure the quick craft spots are limited, but how many times do you *need* to craft 10+ different items on the fly in an instant?

The only room I could see for a mod is presets in case you don't want to start new worlds with the default list.

Debatable if it is even possible to make into a client mod

I'm no modder but mods can remove hud elements (remove map icon), add hud elements (combined status), add clickable hud elements which change in response to user input (geometric placement), and cause you to craft an item (some mod adds a hotkey to craft the latest item you crafted) so it should be possible.

Many (most?) beta testers like the new menu, but I’m not one of them.

it’s unfortunate that it’s very difficult for me to get familiar with the new menu and my crafting is now noticeably slower in general and feels more deliberate.

but I guess I’ll just have to give up and try to adapt.
