To me it only depends of other players, I'm usually the building / fighting guy so I don't really get to change while I have the cook, farmer and foraging players around. So if I don't need anything I'll just remain on my current pick for hundreds of day if needed, but the less players there are the more frequently I'll get to switch for world needs.

I'll usually pick one character to stick with for flavor and mechanics that I enjoy across gameplay, but I might switch if there's something specific I want to do that another character is particularly good at.
...which mostly just consists of swapping to Max if I'm playing another character and want to gather a ton of materials in a short amount of time. Less grind is nice when playing solo, and I like his flavor anyway.

If I ever plan to swap, I make a world specifically to be a world where I use swaps.  I've done this like twice ever and both times it was a failure lol

I'm just not good at swapping - also I don't really care much about exploiting character combo advantages.

I either start the world as Wanda or Wormwood then switch between the two when I feel like it.

If I'm switching to a character that isn't Wormwood or Wanda, then it's specifically to craft an item or structure to serve as decoration. Unless it's Winona because then it's for farming mobs.

I hate swapping, for myself of course, and I don't care if others do it. This is why I don't like it when characters get nerfed due to outside factors concerning other characters. For example, Wigfrid never got a damage buff song probably due to Warly; which is when a damage cap would be a nice implementation to the game (Nothing too severe, for example  .20 damage multipliers counting as the same "buff" for a song ang chilli seasoning).

The reason I dislike swapping is because I think each character tends to have an inclination to a certain play style. Introducing other characters to the mix will just slowly make the world bland and lose the unique touches that made the world/ file cater to that character. I also think it's cheating, BUT that's just my personal taste

I have an Xbox, my Xbox only allows me to have 5 game save slots- those 5 game save slots are each dedicated to a different playable character & when I want to play as someone else.. I will delete an entire world save and start over.

Why? Because I feel like if I pick Wes anything I build, do or survive against should be done AS WES…

This “Character Swap” thing didn’t become an option until DST.. people who played the original DS game are used to being STUCK with the character they choose Until Death.. So people who played & enjoyed the original DS game will probably be on the side of votes that they stick with who they pick.

The only time I’ve ever swapped characters is when I’ve toggled off all the challenging parts of the game and just want to goof off building character exclusive structures for a base or something to that effect.

Theres the Celestial portal… and then there’s also just starting the game in Wilderness Mode where when you Die it takes you back to the character select screen to pick a new character and Respawn into the same world again with any thing you’ve built or done still carrying over (yes kids you heard me.. if you enjoy character swap there’s a faster way then your portal to do it..)

When I play Wilderness Mode I play it in a unique way where I tell the life & death of each Survivor… when I die as Wendy I can’t play as Wendy anymore until I’ve gone through the rest of the character roster-

This is also why when I say I play as every character in the entire game from time to time I MEAN IT…

Ironically enough Rainbow Siege Extraction uses this same kind of gameplay set up when you die as X, X needs to be rescued before you can play as them again..

I had been playing like this for years before Extraction was ever even a thought in someone’s mind.. so it’s kinda cool to see that there’s an actual game that plays similarly to how i had been playing Wilderness Mode on DST.

It would be NICE if Klei would add an actual option to block out character choices when they die.. because sure I can do this in single player by myself, but I can’t force other people who join my world that I expect to play by the same rules- to actually play by the same rules.

But I suppose the TL:DR

Wilderness Mode > Celestial Portal any day of the Week.

Gears are plenty in the ruins.

No offense, I think everyone knows that, but, say you recently cleared all the ruins and died to shadow monkeys and then they later stole the stuff, FUELWEAVER HAS TO BE KILLED AGAIN :crushed:

or you go for tumble weeds, mine the clockwork pices during full moon or new moon, i think even sunken treasures give gears too

as far as i remember you could always change character via teleportato and adventure mode so was a thing since the beginning

You're welcome to your preference - but Wilderness mode clears any stored crafts, recipes, the explored map AND walls you off from any res options / ghost crafts.  It also gives you a random spawn location which could make it more difficult if you die in a bad season or have someone join you.

I'd hardly call it superior if your desire is to simply combine character benefits without needing other players.

And if you really wanna go far back, you could use the Tent to switch characters :}

Mike, character swapping has been a thing since 2012.

In fact, there's even a glitch in solo DS called "Speed Smuggling" that requires character swapping to work.

It takes advantage of the fact that you keep your speed stat when character swapping to transfer character-specific speeds to other characters, like Wilson with WX-78's overcharge speed for example.
