My theory about February's QoL

So last year March's QoL update had Beefalo changes from YotB.

I think that the upcoming QoL update's main gig will be critters' changes. Mainly I hope that just like in YotCat critters will no longer beg for food and that we'll be able to park them somewhere and name them.

I like the idea behind making YotX events a sneeky preview of a QoL update, that way we at least get something worthwhile from them since... lets be honest- YotX events kinda suck. They get boring super quickly. I mean, this year's exceptional content has you walking around the map howering your cursor over every structure in a biome so that you can make a nursery. So exciting!

Anyway...

Marchs QoL was for World Gen and World Gen Settings, I don’t think it had anything to do with YoTB.

But with the current YoTCC event making Catcoon dens rummage-able and also Respawning new ones after so long if the existing ones are destroyed.. those are huge changes to the game already. (These won’t be removed after YOTCC ends either)

So I don’t think the February update is going to be for “Critters” JoeW teases that the changes these upcoming QoLs & 3 Setting the Stage updates will impact the way we play the game much more then previous QoLs.

To me that sounds like more world Gen/World Gen Settings but on a much grander scale then what we’ve had previously- such as being able to have truly randomized Seasons & times of Day.

We do have one HINT at what that updates about though “Craft UI” whatever the heck that even means…

Kinda hope not...  Worldgen is probably the most boring thing to update b/c it just changes what you can have each game.  It doesn't really add anything.  I don't think I'd really consider that a QOL improvement either.  QOL typically is going to take something that isn't working great for people, and improving its usability.  I find worldgen covers what its supposed to do in a good way, I don't think it could be improved much really.  At least, not in a meaningful way.

Even with the hint of craftui... I don't have any idea though...  We'll see.

"Craft" likely refers to the DST crafting system. "UI" likely refers to it's common acronym for "User Interface".

Therefore, I would infer it to mean a change in the quality of life of the user interface of the crafting system of Don't Starve Together.

While I agree that most of the effort seems like it’ll be going towards the whole “craft ui” situation, I don’t think critter changes are completely out of the picture. It’d be nice to give these furry strangers names of their own!

Is it going to be an entirely new UI? Is it going to be the ability to move things to the top without a mod? Is it going to be allowing the rearrangement or toggling of skins? Perhaps an entirely new interface for selecting skins?

So many possibilities.

Alright then.. when I select to play under Random Weather Seasons, and those Seasons aren’t actually Random.. then I’d say that’s taking a feature that isn’t working great for people and fixing its usability.

Please.. stop hating on World Gen.. there are some things Klei is well aware of that they could fix, tweak or improve here and with 6 updates coming this year specifically targeted at setting the stage for what’s coming next- There’s plenty of room to tackle this issue.

True that updating random season lengths and day / dusk / night to be randomized continuously rather than just at world gen would be a nice feature, it wouldn't be a QOL to really get excited about.  It just lacks broad appeal.  Something to do while you're under the hood if you want, but certainly not a reason to lift a card if ya know what I mean.

I’d honestly like a Search Bar so I can type in the name of something I want to craft or the first few letters of it, and then the game automatically starts showing craftables that are close to what I’m typing..

For example I type in Ice and it pulls up the Ice Fishing Rod.

Because let’s just be honest, scrolling through all these crafting tabs to find the thing you want to craft is annoying..

Which is why I rejoice when a character gets their own exclusive crafting Tab.

Wolfgangs Dumbells & Gym are all in one neat little Area,

Meanwhile Wendy’s Stuff: Abigail’s Flower, Sisturn, Ecto Potions are scattered all over the place..

Same for Wurt Florp.. Would love it if they both got the Wolfgang Treatment..

Its just easier to find and use your characters Exclusive crafts this way..

And anyone who’s ever played this game on PlayStation or Xbox can tell you scrolling the craft menus is a pain..

That is too complicated and in other words; unnecesary.

DST isnt like minecraft where there are 1127 items that you can get in creative mode.

and im not a console player but is really scrolling down more annoying than writing the item you would search? (ignorant PC player speaking)

The game already has firearms. Every time a Wormwood dares to have the audacity to enter my field of view while I have a red staff he gets firearms. And firehead, firebody, and firelegs.

That's pretty good - or maybe it can sort things you are holding materials for up top - so if you have pigskins, meats and ropes the football helmet and hambat will be top of the fight tab.  Drop those and grab nm fuel, paper and living logs and you'll see dark swords and night armor up top instead.

It's technically possible, but unlikely.

 

The thing with Beefalo is that they were bad. Objectively so. And YOTB made them not bad between letting you pick items while on them and adding the Beefalo bell.

 

Critters don't really have this problem. They could be less annoying, yes. And a nursery-like structure for them would be nice. But at the end of the day, they do exactly what they're supposed to do. They're cute, aesthetic critters that follow you around. Nothing more, nothing less.

 

Also, as Mike pointed out, the March QoL update didn't update beefalo, save for a small QoL change. It just made the changes introduced in YOTB permanent. And YOTC doesn't change critters. Sure, the kittens behave simlarly to critters. But they're ultimately seperate creatures with seperate purposes. 

I'm just glad for a new update :D

My school just started and coming up to see even a craft UI change would make me really happy. Hope they add more biomes now and make the bosses ACTUALLY matter. Also go back to their DS original roots. While I'm not a veteran or actually bought Dont Starve, they kind of seemed to drift from their original art style just a little bit, I still prefer the look of the older animations, the way u can see its hand drawn its just so perfect for me, though the newer ones are still perfectly fine. Also felt if they added the Lunar stuff back when DS was still being updated, it would be more scary, like the Celestial Champion realllllllllllllllllllllllly doesnt look intimidating, its just... a ball. But still I trust Klei so yeah, if they do what they do best I'd be happy :D

 

ALSO KLEI IF URE SEEING THIS PLEASEEEE ADD A LUNAR CLOCK FOR WANDA I WOULD BE SO FRICKING HAPPY EVEN IF ITS JUST A SKIN

that is not what a qol is supposed to bring but ok
