Wolfgang feedback #789

I think the maximum health modifier Wimpy had was actually interesting.

Now that there's no reason to ever fight in Wimpy, unless you like losing extra health for no reason, the extra healing Wimpy provided will be missed.

There was never any reason to fight while wimpy.  You always got better results fighting while mighty and then healing in normal form.

They probably just meant there's no reason to be in wimpy ever now since wimpy once at least had that fringe benefit of healing more due to the scaling HP. But you're right, it's not like you could ever feasibly take advantage of that mid-fight (where you should already be mighty), it could really only come in useful on early game extended trips with limited supplies, like ruins rushing with blue mushrooms.

I see what Klei went for trying to design new Wolf with similarities and differences to Wanda, unlike Wanda's age instead tying all his power to mighty form and making wimpy be the undesirable punishment -- but alongside how getting mighty is uninteresting, it also makes his other forms really boring.

Just for demonstration, imagine how much less interesting Wanda herself would be if her shadow magic perk was tied to her young form too, and all her middle-aged and old forms were good for were punishing you for not managing/stocking her ageless watches well enough.. This is almost what Wolf is.

It's a slightly extreme comparison as Wolf won't straight-up die when wimpy, and Wanda's older form has more gameplay drawbacks like slower chopping -- but even Wolf's little utility perks like wearing piggyback and marble armor are negated if he even just slips into normal form.

ok, they nerfed wolfg max hp but i dont get what stopped them to reduce wimpy's hp to ~100 to keep that healing mechanic...

too much bad decissions... im afraid of wx rework, i was waiting it for years but now i dont know if i should expect something fun

I once asked if eating rot was a viable strat for pre-rework Wolfgang so that you could go wimpy and heal for more effect.  People said no since (according to them) the healing items themselves scale with Wolfgang’s HP.  So they have the same effect.

I don’t know if I said that I meant for DST and not DS.

Edit: looking back at my comment I think meant "be" not fight. There's no reason to be in Wimpy (now), as before you could still fight in it for a simple spider or pig, to reduce the strain on hunger and ride a beefalo (with piggyback no less).

Now I avoid fighting in Wimpy as often as possible, especially in the early game. Late game I use a beefalo and wimpy Wolfgang which is pretty funny to me as the DPS is greater than running off to work out for 10-8 seconds or two shot the spider on the beef.

Otherwise I'm wimpy out in the field and have to go to a corner to become mighty or rush back to my boat. (While the spiders eat all the loot).

This is the refresh where being Wimpy could have mattered as I'm in far more in it than old Wolfgang who could stay permanently normal without constant stopping.

Who designed this refresh srs?

WX literally has nothing, it's only up from here it would be almost impossible to mess that up

Your forgot they add lightning meter too.  tbh an overcharge meter would have been nice all this time...

There is a reason to be in wimpy now - its because working out every day is a waste of time.  Maintaining mighty is always as or more expensive than staying mighty, because nothing slows down mighty drain.  Only reason to get mighty is when you're fighting all day, otherwise just stay wimpy 24/7.

Yeah, my comment made no sense.

I meant to say I stay in Wimpy but I avoid fighting in Wimpy. I'm on a beef 24/7 and don't interact with the game as wimpy.

Basically stay in Wimpy but avoid doing anything as wimpy, if that makes sense.

I’m still questioning why Wimpy form even exists at all.. like the Wolfgang we see in his animated short is very well fit, So there has to be some lore related reason why Wimpy exists right??

Ironically I think if Wimpy form didn’t exist, significantly less people would be complaining about the rework.. But then again what do I know?

Personally I just wanted becoming mighty to require more effort (and now it does) but for there to be interesting unique ways of interacting with the game while mighty that made being Mighty “Fun” beyond just punching things harder.. and in its current form there doesn’t feel like enough “Fun” to being Mighty..

I would have loved to have seen stuff like being able to jump in front of a charging Beefalo/rook and pull it to the ground with its horn to prevent it from charging into someone Wolfgang wants to protect from harm.

But.. that’s not what we got & I am assuming Klei doesn’t want to go through the hassle of adding a bunch of new animations to him to make being mighty fun & unique, which is a shame because he really had a chance to have unique gameplay centered around being the large man with enough might to force a Beefalo to a halt.

While I am sad that this version of Wolfgang won’t be represented in DST- Maybe at least our feedback has given them inspiration for a better way of portraying him when it comes to a Dont Starve 2.

In old Wolfgang it made sense - if you eat well you get mighty, if you don't eat well you get wimpy as you starve to death.

In new Wolfgang it doesn't make sense, but its because they didn't really put any thought into this.  They had 2 goals:
1) Don't eat the fridge of food => Gyms and dumbbells
2) Take away speed => Now doesn't have speed.

With how gyms work, wimpy form doesn't make sense because its the default form.  IF you gained mighty from actually doing things, and weights / gym were just an instant up, then it would make sense b/c if you're inactive you get wimpy.  But it doesn't make sense that you can play super active and be wimpy all the time.

Wow, the number of unhappy people really did grow from last time.

Poll is looking kind of sexy, not gonna lie.

I think its because a lot of people voted "happy" but it was more like "I like the direction, still needs something though."  With Klei's clarity that they are doing nothing more, or at least nothing significant to Wolf these people can't say that anymore.  Also after more play they might be starting to realize how shallow working out is, and how much upkeep is adding up to stay might.  Most downsides are not too encroaching on standard play patterns and can be mitigated with only slightly altered play, or some set up.

One of the problems with Wolfgang's original kit I think many people overlooked is that even with food being "easy to get," it is still a never ending 2-3x hunger drain.  Even using items like milk hat and hunger vest don't "fix it," they just adjust it for certain situations.  Well changing to lifting weights and gyms didn't alter that part of Wolfgang at all.  You're constantly eating purple gems, being tethered to gyms and needing extra food.  The perks aren't enough to be worth it many times, and simply switching from Wolfgang to Wigfrid would give most players a more smooth experience and honestly save more time than his 2x did b/c she lacks all of the taxed time and resources in setting up / maintaining her perks.

Its not a surprise Wolfgang is dropping in player counts, from 4th place at refresh (mostly boosted from hype) down to 6th and almost 7th place.  It will be funny if he drops blow Wickerbottom.  I don't remember what his rank was before, but I don't imagine he'll hold that place in the end...

Constantly eating purple gems? Two gembells last for 22 days, dfly respawns every 20days, you can literally kill dfly every 20 days for a minimum of 2 purple gems and a max of 4 for a never ending supply of purple gems from first autumn.

And if its too annoying to kill bosses every 20days as wolfgang, why the flip play the 2x damage character in the first place? lol

The 2-3x hunger drain was the worst, as i said before, you spent so much time cooking/gathering food as old wolfgang it felt worse than using gembells for wasting time. If I wanted to spend all my time standing still waiting around crockpots I would just play Warly.... yeno the actual chef character.

Ps. Actually nice to see walter above wanda in the rankings, shame about wurt tho, she is the most underrated character in dst..with walter in 2nd place.

Yes, constantly eating purple gems.  I don't want to hit dfly every respawn lol, I usually hit it once near the start of the world, and again once more to put furnace somewhere else or start duping scales.  With all the other content to do, and ruins resets, I'm not wasting my time farming dfly on respawn lol.  And with all the uses of purple gems, I'm not wasting them on dumb bells.

Its stupid that you need to burn purple gem every 11 days to stay might, that's just silly.  No one else has such a cost, not even WX who eats gears.  A very very FEW may like it sure, if you say you like it I won't tell you you're wrong - but from a game play perspective I can almost guarantee you'll do more, faster, and with less hassle playing Wigfrid or Wanda instead.  Side by sided Wigfrid wins early game hands down now, and once you set up gyms you might as well have gotten AC and tear though game as Wanda without further upkeep.  Wolfgang doesn't offer any unique opportunity anymore, and ever increasing cost the longer you play him.

idk but if you say that you reset the ruins (not taking in count gems from hound waves) you get more than enough to gembells and to make all the telelocator staffs do you wish. You dont waste one gembell every 11 days because you will also use gyms

the rework has flaws but wasting 5 or 6 purple gems at most per year isnt one imo
