The most a modder can do I think is suggest visiting their Ko-Fi or other such service in the description of the mod if someone REALLY liked the experience. Locking anything in mods behind a paywall should not be acceptable.

Are we talking Bethesda style or shoving it behind a Patreon like a lot of Sims modders do? Either way I ain't paying for things I can code myself.

Even worse, it's in-game purchase. You can review it on my last thread

The game is Klei's, why should they make a profit by adapting it themselves? What about Klei? Isn't that how piracy gets paid for cracking software? Incredibly still dare to charge in the official below? More face?

If it is allowed this time, will someone make a mod: for example, axe? Make an axe mod with the same material as the official one, and then bring your own skin, and then charge for it. Then you can hide the making of the original axe. So klei has no profit, who will maintain and update it for us? With the thieves? Do they deserve it?

tip: using formal phrases may reduce the misunderstandings caused by translation

This issue was discussed earlier this year. I only listed some worrying facts in that thread. In this thread, I would like to say some personal positions on this issue.

The mod myth words has been selling character skin using the built-in QR code of the game for more than one year. My opinion is consistent with @HowlVoid. This mod uses DST's function API for coding, and uses a character model completely consistent with DST to draw its characters, using these things for profit is a kind of theft. And one of the main creators of this mod @DST_LSJ, once had a criminal record of unpacking official art materials for sale.

There is a huge difference between paying for content and donating for the author's hard work.

But what worries me more is the future of these payment behaviors. If one day the mod author does not carry out subsequent updates due to his personal reasons or other reasons, it will crash every time DST is updated. By then, who will be responsible for these paid players if the author quits the game and doesn't update the mod anymore?

More seriously, in the CN community, some people already think that it is reasonable to charge for the built-in QR code in mod, and make verbal attacks on those who raise objections. In those communities that Klei can't manage, this is a war, which seriously pollutes the community environment and makes the experience of normal people very poor.

Spoiler

Klei has their own rules for mod authors, but in my opinion, this rule does not work, at least in this issue.

I dont mean to ruin the holidays of that majestic pipe man and his colleagues, but I hope Klei can seriously consider how to deal with this matter. In this community, everything seems to be running normally and everyone is very friendly, but in other communities, verbal abuse has become a weapon of defending the modder who are making profit. I am a little disappointed with Klei's current strategy, for sure i think it's an urgent business to handle.

Paywalled mods? Good god, no.

Donations are fine for people who wanna support mod makers, but don't lock any content behind a paywall. That's just grimey, and definitely against some rules. I'm sure this is already on Klei's radar and hope they'll deal with it how they feel is fair.

Having people pay you for mods to a game you don't own is pretty much stealing.

No matter how good your mods is you're riding on the hard work of the developers who built the foundation of that game and you are exploiting that. Then you are pocketing that money all to yourself and not compensating for that foundation, so yeah stealing.

No gray area there, just pure theft.

Donations are a different matter, people are then showing appreciation and not paying for the content.

i will play devils lawyer role.

If a lot of players like p2w servers or mods with purchable content also benefits klei since there will be players that only have fun in these kind of servers/using this mods

but yeah is stealing since you are using others work and taking advantage of the popularity of the game to gain money. Also klei have waste money on publicity and promotions to increase the player base which is something this mod creators didnt need to do, so they are gaining audience for free

and p2w things are at the moral level of selling drugs,  promoting slot machines, etc since are based in the same psycological principle ( you gain "resources" you brain gives you a "reward" since you have more odds of surviving if you acumulate resources (for that people develop diogenes)) so it takes advantage of people who needs help since their rewarding system is a mess

in conclunsion, it might be good for klei bussiness to dont mind these kind of stuff but the morality of the p2w content creators is at the same nasty pit than phone games creators, tobacco and alcohol bussiness, etc

edit: and as other pointed, there is nothing wrong for asking for donation or other money imputs because there is a lot of work behind and, if with money they cn be focused into releasing more content, that benefits everyone

I do believe that people should be able to be compensated for their work and value added to a product. That's how you incentivize people to keep doing what they do; it's why quality creations continue to exist.
Don't Starve wouldn't be continuing without at least some profit, because...people happen to need money to live.

And everything created is based upon the influences within our lives, so singular ownership of ideas is...complicated, to begin with.

That said, people should spend and participate responsibly.
Support what you want to see grow.
Don't support what you don't like.
If a project seems sus, feel free to keep your distance.

Personally, I prefer donations, but they're rarely reliable, and a lot of people even see that as too much...
And nothing provides incentive quite like not being able to participate without paying up.

...take anything I say on the subject with a grain of salt, though.
I love remixes and meme culture and mods, and I see copyright law as it stands as a broken, horribly outdated blight upon the very concept of creation that needs to be burned to the ground before we can really come up with something better.

Modder's are not held to the same standards as professional developers are, so I don't believe we deserve the freedom to have the same monetization rights and abilities either.

This. While I can understand that someone who puts extensive work into their own skin-artwork might want payment like any other artist, I think it is inappropriate, if not straight up leeching, to make money of another studio's game. I can kiiiind of understand it for skin artwork, but I think, those transactions would be better handled on another platform and if you're charging money not for your drawings, but for additional mechanics to an already existing game, that's a nope. Modders reserve great respect and can totally ask for donations, but the basic understanding of modding should be, that it should be freely accessible for everyone who owns the game, if you put your mod onto the Steam Workshop. Charging money should be a rather individual transaction for personal requests like custom skins or map designs.

Didn’t you just make a thread like this where Joe posted what their plan was? Also, I don’t think this is really something Klei cares about what we think. This is really more of a business discussion

that is just more like a perfunctory. actually there are so many players in CN are concerned with it. due to language they can't share their ideas in real time here. so that is why i wrote a thread again.

we just do not want to see any QR code for receiving money in SHOW ME or any popular mods in future.

in-game purchase mode is NOT donation, that is so ridiculous and offensive.

@JoeW sorry to bother you again, well I think there are some good feedbacks could help you in this thread:D2022 roadmap is a good time to say something about mod in-gamepurchase, CN players are eagling to know the  result. Whatever, thank you for your hard works.
