Character Difficulty Tierlist!

Recommended Posts

Reminder that this is only my opinion... and I admit I haven't played some of these characters, namely Wanda and Wurt, but I placed them based on what I know about them. Here is the preset I used incase you want to make your own!

Wolfgang stays where he is rework or not.

I feel like Warly deserves to be a bit higher. The crockpot only trait makes him very difficult to keep well fed, especially for players who don't have a diverse knowledge on dishes. You can try to spam meatballs or something but the lowering of hunger value makes it a greater resource sink. It also makes adventuring much more fatal if unprepared.

I think Wes, Wanda, Warly, Wormwood, and Maxwell have pretty noticeable downsides and the rest of the characters are around the same.

Edit: Oh wait but if character swapping is allowed then WX has the downside of losing gears when he swaps, which is a certified /cry moment.

Not necessarily difficult, but depending on her health shadow weapons deal more damage, with her signature weapon dealing 140 damage at 25% health or less. So to maximise that DPS you'll have to play a lot more risky.

(also I created that tierlist, small world we live in!)

Wanda is not THAT hard

I made an alignment chart instead, which I'll try to explain as best as I can. Also keep in mind I only play Wanda, Wickerbottom & Warly whoops.

Skill floor: How skilled you have to be in a character to survive through the game

Skill ceiling: How much skill is needed to perform your character at your best.

This means that bottom left is easy to play, easy to master. Bottom right is easy to pick up, hard to master. Top left is hard to pick up, easy to master and top right is hard to pick up, hard to master.

Spoiler

Wilson: Smack dab in the middle, probably don't have to explain why.

Willow: Pretty much in the middle as well, however I haven't really played a lot of Willow.

Wolfgang: Easy to pick up and excel at, (for now) doesn't have any deeper strategies to fighting bosses other than hitting them.

Wendy: Abigail gives you a lot of food you wouldn't otherwise get as a beginner, however maintaining Abigail later in the game asks more of you.

WX: Basically Wilson but afraid of the rain, very easy to survive with once the gears start pouring in.

Wickerbottom: No hard downsides, acquiring books & using them gives her quite a lot to learn.

Woody: Haven't played a ton of him, but managing his forms is a bit of a hassle.

Wes: Hard to play character with little to no reward, hence why he is the only one in the high skill floor - high skill ceiling category.

Maxwell: HP of 75 is a pain to deal with, even in the lategame. rewarding shadows to do your dirtywork however.

Wigfrid: You can basically keep yourself alive by killing everything in sight, songs add a higher skill ceiling than Wolfgang.

Webber & Wurt: Kind of hard to rank this way since they differ so much from the norm, Webber has a lot more starting off with Wurt rewarding more further in the game.

Winona: Basically Wilson except has more to get into with her catapults and such.

Warly: Maybe not necessarily a high skill foor, just hard to get used to. His spices and special recipes add so much to his character though

Wortox: Easy HP when killing any mob, no real advanced strats other than soul kiting.

Wormwood: Hard to restore HP compared to other characters, however keeping him in bloom is very rewarding.

Walter: Another odd one to rank, the damage sanity makes it harder for newer players to use him, and he has his slingshot which doesn't add a whole lot.

Wanda: Very easy to pick up, basically 12.5 health (or 5 years) for free every 2 minutes. But has by far the hardest to optimize playstyle with her age.

new can have trouble because of original wolfgangs hunger thing

Wormwood very inconvenient? More like very convenient.

Ooh~ I wanna make one

Skill tier lists are based entirely on personal preference, here’s a shocker for you: Wes is in my Top 4 Most played characters.
(Wendy, Wurt & Wormwood top 3)

Ever since the newer content updates such as Day 1 Beefalo mounts: I’ve had no problem playing as Wes.

I one time STARVED to death as Wigfrid because I was in a biome with no meat sources for miles in sight… and then I had myself an epic little facepalm moment, I had completely forgotten that any time during this no food anywhere in sight misfortune that I could’ve just fished in the Ocean I was walking past the entire time..

(because yeah I actually forgot deep sea fishing & a explorable ocean was a thing until I died.. treating the game like a Pre-Return of them update where I just ignored the ocean)

I starved because I had forgotten a feature of the game..

Just like I’ve managed to die eating Red Caps as Wendy because I had gotten used to eating them with no penalty as Wormwood.

Skill lists are biased of one’s own opinion and shouldn’t be treated as a means of deciding who you want to play as or try to learn.

the weapon makes every fight a lot more easier, a lot, but you have the most difficult hp bar to manage so there is a lot less room for mistakes like getting wet and start freezing, being stunlocked, etc can kill you

is really fun and, if someone get bored because of the weapon, there is always the choice of using dark sworks to be at melee

edit: that playing as elder, you can be at 75%hp and deal like 90 damage per hit with her weapon(with less atack speed)

4 hours ago, Well-met said:

About as hard as the rest of the characters I listed. The only way she can heal is with Ageless Watches which don't stack and take an inventory slot each. The heal is a pretty long animation and if she gets hit during it not only does she take damage from the attack, the heal is also cancelled but it still goes on cooldown. She can't heal while taking damage over time (hypothermia, hyperthermia, burning, starving) and in order to deal the most damage you're going to be sitting at around 20 health.

You do have to explain why. How is he harder to play and harder to master than literally anyone else? He doesn't do anything.

I actually think Willow is an ideal character if you need to babysit newer players. Craftable lighters are top tier stuff you can hand out to everyone and that also means you don't have to worry about light for a long time. Fire buff and cook speed are also beneficial if you need to keep a bunch of noobs alive. Willow can cook food on the go while gathering stuff for everyone, she can leave the sanity food to others because sanity from fire and a miniboss against nightmares in her pocket and if anyone can save your smoldering base or stop a forest fire from spreading, its her. I feel like because of her "fire go brrr" reputation, she isn't getting enough credit as a support character with a bunch of convenient traits.

I'm gonna take it a step further, I'm gonna tierlist tierlists.

A tier: Meneervis, solid tierlist and very easy to understand.

B tier:

C tier: Skelevar, I disagree with Wanda's, Willows, Walter's and Wickers placements.

D tier:

F tier: No one deserves f tier, except Webber.

Why are max and wurt so high on everyones list?

Max just has to remember to wear (preferably good) armor when in dangerous situations and hes just like a regular character with the only exception being that he has to eat his pierogi a lil sooner than the rest.

Max’ low hp is one thing but i have no idea why wurt is at the top. The biggest thing i can think of is gold scarcity. Everything else about her is normal/very managable imo. Her gameplay quirk is that she has a bigger emphasis on farms and sailing.

Maxwell only has to wear armor, have spare armor ready to equip, heal early wasting some of the heal, and not get combo'd. Wes only has to do the exact same thing as Maxwell. Wanda only has to do the exact same thing as Maxwell but with a slower heal animation. Wormwood only has to use spider glands, bat bats, and jellybeans. Warly only has to do the same things Wormwood does but also with the choice of healing with food at less efficiency if he isn't varying the types of food.

All the characters can work around their downsides for not too much effort. Most of the hard characters are hard for the same reason Maxwell is.

oh whoops! Yeah in that sense you're right. I just used him as basis, maybe in retrospect I would have to change his placement lol

23 hours ago, Well-met said:

I played her once and can say from my experience and opinion -

If you're terrible at managing health already, she's gonna be hell. Because you gotta manage your health IN a battle too and heads up, the thing here is, its like wormwood, eating food ain't gonna give you a year, Pal. You got that ageless clock? Oh it's on cooldown? Too bad you might die.

Also as the other person said, her granny form(closest to death) deals i think double damage with shadow weapons(Including the alarming clock), but it's a high risk high reward kinda thing when you fight something real strong. Would say she can ne hard to master, but with the least managing skills she wouldn't be a problem.

Also late game you can get alot of ageless clocks for easy age(health) restoration. If you can afford and not be scared of the ruins or something like me B).

wormwood is far more difficult than wurt snd more after rwys and the ability to grow giant healing veggies even im winter

my usual winters as Wurt are a cactus and mushroom diet, with the rare berry leftover. i would rather freeze to death than maintain a crop farm.

generally harder than what I do with wormwood.

Have to say that the most annoying part about max is that his shadow guys are so weak. They don't last particularly long and get frequently killed by tree guards and hounds (not sure if spiders can kill them too). Ok so no big deal, time to get some nightmare fuel. However, his sanity is always net positive so you do things that drop sanity a lot (like jumping in wormholes, green caps, etc) and you spawn 1 or 2 terrorbeaks. yay.

Bottom line is that most people think of max as the resource gatherer. However, once he uses up his initial nightmare fuel, he can't gather resources anymore and has to fight nightmare critters with the lowest hp in the game.

I'm confused on webber and Willow's placement Willow's downside doesn't really come into play since if freezing is a problem you were likely going to die anyway on any other character.

As for webber I would put him in the bottom tier as his upsides completely negate his downsides.

I'd say yes and no the average dst player who doesn't know how to mass produce healing is probaly going to actually find surviving as her easier but she still requires alot of advanced knowledge to actually know how to make what she needs.

11 hours ago, ArubaroBeefalo said:

This  is legit a good reason for her to rank as more difficult to some, even more so for newer players as she removes one of the most abundant food types.

Fun fact: play Uncompromising Mode and suddenly Webber becomes absolute top tier: can eat the monster food you now get from almost everything and doesn't have to worry about the more abundant, more aggressive spiders and also has a meat shield available for cheap.
