Is it lisenced for modders to make money from in-game sales in the DST within their mod?

Recommended Posts

I am curious about this for months, accroding the Player Creation Guidelines, i think it is not .......right:-|and illegal.

I've heard about some in-game purchase mods or chargeable mods, at last they all be forced removed, by guidelines or something else you know:wilson_laugh:.

They all end badly.

This is for sure not allowed as far as i know, I remember a similar problem happened some time ago with ingame purchases in a chinese private server.

i see no problem not that i would ever spend money on skins be it official or not ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

yeah i know what you mean, its not premitted in DST, not every games. in MC the mod profit making is permitted, but Klei set the rules here, so we should follow it

I remember a similar case from another game, the mods were forced to back away from the idea of selling their services.

So yeah, dont think its allowed.

but seems Klei do nothing with it, actually the most i concerned about is the Klei's attitude, if they made the rules but did not make it fair, its so bad and unfair for other modders and the regular players(no one want a unreliable purchase)

the most important thing you need to pay attention is that Authorized Certification, when you spend your money on it through Klei's authorization, you will be more reassured, will you?:D

The mod does have content you have to pay for/earn. I've checked.
The files for the stuff in the mod is also in an encrypted file, the same tech Klei uses for their skins.
I'd wait for a dev to speak on the legality of it all but I'm really against the practice of stuff like this... when uploading a mod you're agreeing to not wall off the mod's contents from anyone.

But, i've said it to Klei, they just did say nothing. that' s why come here.

Again, I mean, I’m sure I have seen similar thread before. In fact, this is not a news in the CN community at all. I would like to say that it is normal for the authors of this mod to make profits in any ways.

As I know, besides in-game purchase, they have ever make profits by two other different ways:

they have listed the skin of their mod characters on CN e-shop (this for example: the e-shop) to sale as shown in the picture below:

Spoiler

1869655669_QQ20211016143654.thumb.png.77fa75bfdd5f0d5b1707a863587189f1.png

this skin are sold for 9.3 RMB

I calculated the e-shop profits according to the number of the comment shown as the picture below (because comment is allowed only after purchase), the total profit of this e-shop is 43933 RMB (equal to 6826.3 dollars)(sorry i have miscalculated this number before)

Spoiler

total profits:

75*9.3+87*9.3+846*9.3+82*9.3+22*6.2+82*9.3+264*12.5+179*22+476*9.3+60*9.3+521*15.8+320*12.5+54*6.2+113*9.3+119*15.8+239*15.8+39*12.5+30*12.5+12.5*43 = 43933 RMB = 6826.346 dollars

(sorry i have miscalculated this number)

I would remind you that the guest of e-shop don’t like to send a comment at all, and the main profit way is not the e-shop but the in-game purchase. I cant image how many money they have made using this mod

By the way, they make profits not only by their mod but also the official files:

An author of this mod named DST_LSJ in forum and 美神自由梦 in bilibili have ever unpacked the art resources in the game and sold them to his fans priced 5 yuan for single picture/55 yuan for 14 pictures as the screenshot shows:

YIKES Oh no. Isn't the whole point of encrypting to prevent stuff like this?

Well, this mod is “controversial” in CN community, because its fans and some of its authors  like to say Klei official stealing their ideas. Here are some of the screenshot of these words, noticing there is one screenshot of the author himself to say the mod is a DLC.

Klei's image is a repeat offender of plagiarism in their mouth. surely they like the mod but they dont like the klei officail :spidercowers:

And the words I mentioned above cause some argument, here is the example: this is a thread for 600+ replies on arguing these words.

While I agree its worthwhile to bring such concerns forward, when it comes to legality and also potentially stepping-in on infringements like this devs (and I can personally confirm Klei telling me similar when reporting a different issue, basically just "Thanks, I won't speak more on this for legal reasons") don't want to make their actions public. Another thread on a similar topic was likely closed without response so that it could be reviewed and responded too internally without drawing to much attention to both any corrective measures or the offending party.

This is, almost certainly an infringement of something, but I think the most that can be done is the removal of the mod from particular upload sources such as steam. Putting things like this under the right number of layers can make taking action difficult.

So that's why I post this thread, if one modder can make huge money by their ingame purchase, so do I , or everyone. But the truth is no one did the work like myth team. It's totally unfair, right? So this problem should not ignored by Klei.

Modders, in theory, should not be profiting from their mods directly- aka, ingame mod purchases, asking for funds to add features, etc- These are things that are basically 100% against the rules and not intended. There are some blurrier lines- for example someone whos a prolific modder might have a donations page linked somewhere for people to support their work. On the surface this seems very similar to ingame mod purchases, but is actually generally seen as something perfectly fine to do because you're donating to support the creator, and not the mod directly. This is the same reason why fangames made for things usually always make the game free, even if there is an option to "support the devs"

But the problem im talking about is really about implementation- even when things are against the rules, actually enforcing them can be very difficult. The monetization of the mod in-game, if on platforms like steam, can easily result in it's removal. But that doesn't delete the mod from existence, and it would still be usable with some tech skill and a different download link. The money payment runs through a QR and chinese storefronts, and arguing that those are invalid (from a legal standpoint to get them taken down on those sites) is a lot harder. That's why I said putting such infringements behind the right number of layers can make doing anything about it difficult, even if Klei knows about it and wants to.

And because these things can be very messy, if Klei does take action they wouldn't announce the details of it unless they absolutely needed too.

I just want to make sure the attitude of Klei, if they clearly said"it is not right", so the CN players will know it's  wrong and do not pay for or support it no longer, and this infringement could be shut down by pubulic opinion.

The truth is few of CN player think it's unright and illegal, more and more consider it is just like OFFICIAL SKIN PURCHASE because of Klei ' s mute.

The attitude and claim from Klei is very crucial
