Mike23Ua
There are lots of things you can do it’s a sandbox game and you should play the way you personally want to play, if you are playing on default settings winter doesn’t start till around day 20 or so, until then pretend your a squirrel harvesting nuts for the winter, get all the food you can that isn’t going to spoil quickly & have that ready for winter, in addition Winter itself will bring new mobs for you to hunt down for foods such as Pengull and Mactusks, At the minimum- Your going to want to make sure you keep enough wood, grass and charcoal on you to build fires with at all times when you start freezing to death, there are other items you can seek out to assist in your winter endeavors such as Rabbit Ear Muffs or Winter Hats. But as long as you stay warm and keep food sources plentiful you should survive, good luck, have fun.. don’t die! sovon9
you will get many pro player suggestion buy I will tell you how I was surviving as a new player. Winter is really difficult for a new player because in autumn you get everything you need to survive but for winter you need preparation. I always try to camp near a grass field where there are lots of rabbit holes. it's the best food source and in winter the main difficulty you will face is food. chop lots of wood in autumn if you don't have a forest near by and make a firepit with thermal stone. these are enough to survive in winter . eat , worm up body and repeat . you just have to take care of deerclops and it's very easy if you just avoid it by spanning him far from your base. Also there are many videos in youtube that will help you tremendously, watch them. me real life
If you're having issues with food in winter, keep in mind that plants that have already grown during autumn won't die off in winter or anything. You can always leave a bunch of berry bushes unpicked, then slowly pick them for meals/ingredients during the winter. DarkPulse91
The 1 main tip I will always tell every new player: Pick your fights carefully. And NEVER go into a fight without armor. Jeez the amount of times I died early on just because I THOUGHT I could solo that clockwork knight for some gears on day 3 is more than Id like to say. But that's because I always tried to do it without armor. So I died in only a few hits. BeeClops
I think this game is best experienced by exploring options and your own ideas, you can always go to wiki as it is a somewhat reliable source for your info and stats. After you know the basics survival is really easy, it becomes more of a challange to rush X boss or a base building game. I suggest you won't rush the first and best part by getting too informed, i'd also suggest playing alone until you get the hang of it; and don't be afraid to die, experiment and explore, it's how you are meant to learn. Szczuku
Temperature: make a thermal stone (survival tab) and heat it up. If it starts to cool down and you don't want to build a campfire, you can always find a singled out tree and set it on fire with a torch. That way you'll heat up and won't cause a forest fire. Thermal stone is the bare minimum you need to survive winter but you should try to make some warm clothing. Food: burning trees down mentioned earlier will give you charcoal. You can use it to make crockpots and drying racks. Crockpots allow you to turn bad food into good food. A single monster meat and 3 ice is enough to make meatballs. Drying racks allow you to turn meat into jerky. Jerky lasts longer and restores both health and sanity. You can also build an ice box to keep your food fresh but that requires a gear which might be hard to gather if you're not comfortable with fighting the clockworks. There's a small chance to find one is a tumbleweed though (desert biome). Gathering food: berry bushes and carrots can be left unharvested for emergency food in winter. As for meat you can catch rabbits with traps (place them above their holes) and you can lure moleworms with rocks (when they peak their head out to eat a rock you can kill them). For big meat you'll have to learn how to fight. You can turn a pig into a werepig with 4 monster meats. It'll drop 2 normal meats and 1 pigskin. Koalefant is a good source of meat but killing it might be hard and it doesn't always work out. Fighting: in most cases you hit x number of times and then dodge. The easiest way to learn proper patterns is to hit 2 and dodge. If you still had some time to hit before the enemy counter attacked that means you can hit it more before dodging. When fighting enemies like spiders or bees that are always in groups and can be stunlocked you need to just hit one of them once, dodge and hit again. Going for 2 or more hits in those situations will usually result in you getting hit multiple times. Enemies will keep chasing you if you allow them to try to hit you. You can use this to your advantage. If you attack a beefalo or pigmen all nearby pigs/beefs will start to chase you. If you let your original target attempt to hit you then it'll reset its agro. The rest of the enemies will leave you alone and your target will keep chasing you. Now just lead it away from its friends and you can 'safely' kill it. Hound attacks: the easiest way to deal with hounds is to base near (but not too close) to beefalos. When you hear barking leave your base and go to beefalos. Run around them, dodging hounds and after a while hounds will start to attack beefalos. wons
do you want to survive winter? craft thermal stone, try to keep it warm (put it next to campfire, firepit, something that is burning right now) and just, keep it in your inventory so you won't freeze to death, at almost end of winter, deerclops comes, when you start to hear her heavy breathing, just, RUN OUT YOUR BASE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE, you can kill her if you want or you can lure her so she might go into trees, the treeguards might kill her, you can use hats to stay warm longer but it's necessary... or just watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo4fmQi88sk Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/124831-new-in-game-p/#findComment-1405207 Share on other sites

Articestone
I think the biggest problem for winter might be food for newbies as they often use berries, carrots as a food source. I would recommend getting a crockpot before winter And for food you can use ice and monster meat from spiders for meatballs, build a birdcage and a bird trap and catch a bird and feed it cooked monster meat to get eggs and get a bit of veggies for pierogi for healing. Spiders as they are easy to handle as they can be stunlocked while you can make traps to handle the spider warriors. For deerclops if you are not confident make some armor, wood marble or football helmet and armed yourself with a hambat or a tentacles spike and build 2 firepit next to you and fight him there tanking all the dmg. Remember to bring some healing food and sanity food to heal and get your sanity up. Healing food would be pierogi - releatively easy to get and sanity food would be cooked green Mushrooms and cooked cactus(wear armor while harvesting) which is also easy to get Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/124831-new-in-game-p/#findComment-1405235 Share on other sites
VouMorrer
dont worry so much about food, in a few days a new update will come with new farming, i gess it will be easier to get food during winter now. have a good surviving! SinancoTheBest
Try not to get demoralized with deaths and restarts, that's the point of the game; trial, error, redo. Above all the adventure, building, social and survival aspects, DST is a roguelike. I see many new players struggling with the idea and failing to enjoy their experiences. ShadowDuelist
I will add my 2 cents to the previously mentioned tips: When I first started playing I didn't do the alchemy machine. It is important to try to craft the science machine early on, and then try to craft the Alchemy machine, which replaces the science machine entirely (once you have the alchemy machine you can hammer down the science machine and use its components). The alchemy machine will allow you to craft all the important items in the game, including the thermal stone everyone mentioned. Also the other important tip: Make a crock pot. Crock pots let you add a lot more value to the food and make it much more efficient. You can survive winter by capturing rabbits or spiders, and cooking the meat + 3 ice on the crockpot to obtain meatballs which is a high hunger value food. Have fun, and watch a lot of videos! Those are the best ways to learn. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/124831-new-in-game-p/#findComment-1405241 Share on other sites
CaptainChaotica
As mentioned above, ice can be used in the crockpot (as weird as that sounds). So one meat (including monster meat, which you can get from the hound attacks that happen no matter what) + 3 ice is a nice filling meatball. Actually one meat + three almost ANYthing makes a meatball, but in winter ice is more available. --If you want more variety in your diet, stuff people have said before about unpicked berries and carrots still being there, is absolutely true. Mushrooms too. Cactus is a great food and sanity source if you cook it. --ALWAYS have fire supplies (wood and grass) on you, so you don't get caught out while gathering/exploring and freeze to death. Actually it's a good idea to have those always anyway, because of darkness. --Living in a savannah isn't a bad idea, as rabbits provide both meat and earmuffs. The savannah (yellow grassland) itself provides a lot of grass, needed for fire and crafting. Also they have rocks, which might be enough to make a thermal stone. --Deserts are also good to live in or near, as tumbleweeds have grass and twigs in them _all year long_, even when those things stop growing back! and cactus of course is good food. Only the Dragonfly's desert has tumbleweeds, but both have cactus. (How to tell which one it is? Look for round cactus, that's the Dragonfly one. On some worlds the two deserts are blended into one.) --Rocks and trees being hearby isn't bad either, as you will need a steady supply of firewood...and thermal stones break. --Hound attacks can be led into beefalo, if you've found them. Wait until a hound actually bites a beefalo, and THEN the entire herd will stomp them into a paste. Pigs will auto-attack hounds, but they go into their houses at dusk and don't come out until morning. Other ways to deal with hounds include tentacles (be careful!), bees (if they bite the hive, in winter), tallbirds, or, of course, attacking and dodging correctly. --BE AWAY FROM BASE on Night 30, which is guaranteed to be the first time Deerclops attacks. Have at least two if not three torches on you, because you will need to do a lot of running in the middle of the night. Spawning the Deerclops in the middle of nowhere will keep your base safe. If you can lure Deerclops into something dangerous, even better, but not necessary. She automatically despawns at the end of winter. --I agree about ALWAYS PUT ON YOUR LOGSUIT BEFORE FIGHTING! It's easy to forget that step in the heat of the moment, so be careful. --The "Reap What You Sow" update will be off the beta soon, and in that there are a few crops you CAN grow in winter. That might be a hair advanced, but it's worth knowing. ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/124831-new-in-game-p/#findComment-1405285 Share on other sites

Cheggf
Game's way more fun when you figure it out on your own. My tip is try to figure out how to efficiently spend your time in the autumn to prepare for winter on your own. It will be much more rewarding than reading what someone else wrote and simply following their instructions.
