Why use jet suits?

Recommended Posts

I used them to collect shove voles on uneven and changing terrain. The scaffolding is nice to not be necessary also.

What i dislike is the extreme slow flying. A dupe on ladder will go much faster. Then again if they can route to the target they will use the ladders to save fuel so the slow flying is only (mostly) used when they cant reach the target any other way.

I could live without them, they also lag the game a lot so maybe some speed upgrade would be nice to make them a worthwile investment.

There are places inside the gravitas only reachable using jet suits. [Behing the huge chandelier to name one.]

But I used(d) them mainly for convenience.

Having one duplicant with access to a jet suit makes deconstructing stuff much easier. [No more left over pieces or manual deconstruction for every few pieces.]

PS: My last oasis map allowed me to produce jet suits way before I could build atmo suits^^

[So my progression was from jet to atmo suits.^^]

Don’t use them.

They compromise the vacuum.

You can prevent dupes to enter a room with jet suits by building a jet suit checkpoint oppsite to the entering direction without a closet, and then setting the option to vacancy.

However... even if I have the jet suit system, I still can't plan-massive-digging-area-and-watch-everything-happen-afk because my dupes would spend 90% time of day calculating for their next errand.

Dupes equipped with Jet Suits don't find themselves trapped because of a regolith pile or the bunker doors closed and they were doing stuff up top. I've had to do enough emergency rescues of Dupes trapped behind something on the surface to appreciate this. Though at least Dupes in exo suits aren't in danger of suffocating because they backed themselves into a corner filled with carbon dioxide, which is my usual crisis in the asteroid proper.

Ladder building takes time. If it's a one-use ladder that I intend to deconstruct once the main project is done, it's just a lot simpler to let the Dupes fly to the work area.

There's also the "no build / deconstruct order dependency" advantage. Mark a floor to get constructed, it's going to get constructed, even if a Dupe digs out a 2-space gap in the process. You can mark an entire ladder to get deconstructed and it'll all get deconstructed, even if a Dupe knocks out a couple of the bottom pieces first.

So, while ladders can eventually get anything accomplished, Jet Suits often let you do it faster and easier.

I use them when my FPS is too high and I'm looking for a way to slow down my game. :D

Unfortunately, jet suits are currently only useful if:

A) You have a fast CPU

B) You know how to optimize a base for FPS

C) You implement them before your base becomes a lagfest

D) You use them in space or have a way to handle the CO2

E) All of them above

Jet suits can run out of fuel, so occationally dupes still may need rescued if they get stuck.

As they are now, pointless

There are tiles ONLY reachable using jet suits.

=> If there is no other way, jet suits can´t be pointless^^

[It´s only about some tiles inside the gravitas, so if you don´t want to "rebuild" the facility...]
