Becoming a Ghost..

Recommended Posts

There is one thing about Don’t Starve Together that is really boring to me.. and that’s the part where you DIE and float around for forever as a ghost trying to find someone to revive you.. or a resurrection stone/whatever.

The only thing you can do is “Haunt” things which for the most part is completely useless!!! what I thought would be really cool would be if we made being a ghost LESS useless..

so here are a few of the best idea’s I could think of for them

SKELETONS!!

There are a lot of Dead Skeletons often scattered across your worlds these usually have loot nearby and your character will make funny remarks such as “Better him than Me!” Etc.. but what if as a ghost Haunting stuff actually DID something?!?

Haunt a Skeletons body to animate it to life and play as that Skeleton, however.. you would have maybe 30% health and will break apart and become a unhauntable bone pile after taking 1 or 2 hits from anything!!

(this would act as sort of a Second Chance type thing.. where you can play as a skeleton until you can have the ghost resurrected by normal means..) I guess to counter the 30% health as a skeleton you wouldn’t have to worry about starving to death.

GRAVES!!

Okay so becoming a skeleton is neat but what if we could Haunt actual graves in the game?? What would this do you guys ask? How about giving the player a 30% chance to spawn out of the grave as any of the playable characters they’ve unlocked randomly (I got this idea from the way you had to unlock Webber in the Original Reign of Giants Single Player game..) the other 70% chance will have you Haunt the items players dig out of graves like the boot!! however you’ll only hop up and down 5 or 6 times as the item before your ghost ejects itself from the item rejecting it.

and finally we come to the last cool thing being a ghost could do (warning minor spoilers for Don’t Starve’s Campaign Mode will follow)

PUZZLE NAVIGATION!!

Okay so in The original single player games Adventure mode there were these walls players could only pass through by having their Sanity level above or below a certain threshold but what if we had walls players could only pass between as a ghost?!?!!!!

No, being a ghost is not useless, in fact there are many things you can do:

  • Follow suspicious dirt piles without risking your life, like if it leads to hounds or Dragonfly (you can't die if you alredy did, eh?)
  • Grow farms a bit
  • Change mushrooms' type (with 50% chance I think?)
  • Make some animals and monsters panic, you can help your living mates in the fight by taking some enemies out of action for short
  • Turn pigs to werepigs
  • Turn flowers into evil flowers, either for nightmare fuel or rather a sanity station
  • Chop trees (yes, it's painfully slow)

There might be more, but that's what came into my mind at the moment.

About your haunting idea, it sounds interesting. Walking skeletons are spooky, would be very fitting for Hallowed Nights.

If it's boring to die in DST, why don't you try not to die in DST?

Or perhaps try to play DS? I mean: If you die in DS, you won't need to "float around forever as a ghost trying to find someone to revive you..", you'll just loose all your progress in your actual world and get the chance to start a completly new world, until you learn how not to die in DS.

I actually die quite often in DST... and unless your an expert who has been playing the game for forever- (or if your a cheater and look up EVERYTHING online ruining the fun of figuring it all out for yourself..) your bound to die too it just happens!!

i usually make it to about day 22-24 before Winter comes and kills me rather quickly- someday I will find a way to survive past day 24.. but for now, dying and becoming a ghost happens.

and when they start incorporating the Shipwrecked DLC stuff into DST- anyone who has NOT played Shipwrecked is going to die that much more often.

I for one loved the idea of pirate boats and naval warfare so as soon as the dlc was released on my Xbox console I bought it and completely stopped playing the non-Shipwrecked worlds.

Mmm... I guess it could be interesting if it's weaker than what you suggested, you're dead so you suposed to stay as long nobody revive you, then making it useful for multiplayer when no one give a single Wes about reviving you could be nice at this moment, like you can control a skeleton for a minute before it break in bone shards after that time.

Go play DS then you'll appreciate ghost is better than dead for good.

you do know that some people actually play this game with other players, right?

Well, if you aren't able to survive together for more than 20 days and keep complaining about it, then you should try to survive alone in a lonely world to learn the game mechanics. In that case, learning with friends is harder than learning alone.

Considering that the game did not come out on Xbox until 2017 many people including myself are still learning the game and I am not ashamed to admit that I had to come to these forums just to figure out why this little kid playing Wormwood in my world was screaming into his headset not to pick flowers and chop down trees... I do not have Wormwood unlocked... and-

Klei does not post any sort of In-game messages to inform players that Wormwood loses sanity when trees or flowers or saplings are destroyed anywhere near him.

I am a 32 yr old gamer.. and I do not use a headset while playing Xbox because of the children who yell into my sensitive ear drums.. so having this kid scream into my tv not to pick up flowers was weird...

but to put this post back onto it’s original topic- I want to be able to do more while being a ghost sometimes while playing in random DST worlds you hardly Ever see another player at all and being able to haunt a Grave or  a skeleton would give players a (small) chance of being able to revive themselves after death.

If being a ghost is too much of a hurdle then maybe stay away from Survival mode.

Endless mode provides unlimited revives at the Florid Postern.

Wilderness mode has no ghosts at all. Upon death you simply "restart" at the character selection screen and then spawn back in as whoever you like.

Personally, I find being a ghost rather useful in certain situations. With the two other game modes being available, I don't see the need to trivialise dying/reviving in Survival mode. Klei are already busy taking challenge out of the game with these ridiculous new character buffs. No need to give them even more new ideas on how to make the game piss easy, mmkay?

I don’t know what information you have been reading but the character reworks are just step 1-

they are also adding brand new content with lots of new horrible things that want to kill you as part of step 2-

I’m curious as to how they plan to Rework my favorite character Wendy her Abigail flower works well enough.. but maybe they’re considering letting her use Abigail’s ghost as some type of Lantern source?? Her character description does read “feels comfortable in the dark..” after all & that’s literally the ONLY thing I can think of that would work for her in a Rework. But you never know what Klei have in plan.

Yeesh, where have we gone?

I still firmly believe that when you're dead, you're dead.

Only thing I'd change would possibly be letting the player be able to hold onto items a bit longer, haunting an item and making it bounce once slightly bothers me.

I want more bouncy objects, fight me.
