Anyone found a use for Ethanol yet?

Googlefu tells me it makes for great hand sanitizer, so perhaps it's going to have medical applications?

Not a bad idea, but the the database text indicates something else.

Ethanol is a high toxic chemical compound.

It can be used as a highly effective fuel source when burned.

That's why I suspect it's fuel for a rocket engine. It could be something else. Power production doesn't seem likely because ethanol is made from wood and there is already wood burning power production.

I noticed that it has a decent thermal capacity and stays liquid down to -114.1 C. That could be interesting for some pre-space cooling applications.

This is what I was thinking. You could have a pretty big excess of it way before most people get access to oil, might make a great thermal liquid.

A biofuel generator was my first thought, but then I followed your train of thought on the wood burner.

The wood to power conversion seems unbalanced. It's 5.7 g/s wood per W for wood burning while it's 6.4 g/s per W for converting to ethanol and then burn that in a petroleum generator. While it's more efficient to use the petroleum generator, the 240 W to convert wood to ethanol cost more than the gain.

We should expect the input/output values to be updated.

I found a typo in my spreadsheet calculations. It actually looks more reasonable when calculated correctly (wow, what a surprise)

Wood burning: 5.7 g/s per W

Ethanol: 2.85 g/s per W

An off by one error can indeed make a huge difference when it's a cell address :p

All calculations are outdated because a recent patch changed all the numbers.

Ethanol production also produces a substantial amount of polluted dirt as a byproduct, making it even more superior to wood burning.  Perhaps ethanol should be nerfed somewhat.

There is a new plant that makes wood, and a building specifically to make Ethanol, but I cannot seem to find any recipe or item in the game that can utilize it. Am I just missing something?

There's listings in the files for an ethanol generator.

Ethanol is also drinking alcohol, so I have a fair idea on where the modding community can take that. :wilson_sneaky:

I was wondering how we were going to feed the new crab. It eats polluted dirt.

How many crabs do you need? There's also the sieve, now that we have alternate sources of dirt.

Too many uses for pwater. I end up not actually sieving all that much. They added a new useful plant that eats pwater too so it'll be even less. As for how many crabs? Need to learn more. It seems like at least one stable of them is a good idea. They generate extra lime when they shed. If they lay eggs at a decent clip and give more meat than hatches or pips maybe more.

the trees seem to be mostly copied from the peppernut plant, I would hold off on figuring out plant stuff until it's been finalized, as things could change.

Because we have SOOOOOO much algae to feed pacus with so they poop for us.

All critters that excrete will do so at least once in their lifetime, whether they eat anything or not.  Depends on their relative lifetimes, kCal requirements, and kCal conversion of their food items.

You can grow trees for ethanol, combust it in the petroleum generator and use the pwater to grow the trees. The result is an ethanol positive feedback loop (per watching streams last night). You can feed the polluted dirt to crabs and use them for food and lime
