Is there a reason to disinfect water?

Recommended Posts

Perhaps I am missing something, but if you are no longer using the Food Musher or Water Cooler, is there a reason to disinfect germ filled water before use?
I recently learned that using germ water in hydroponics do not transfer germs to the food, so there goes all my reasoning for disinfecting toilet water.

Can anyone give me a good reason to keep using my disinfecting system?

EDIT: sorry for any bad English, it is not my main language.

"To sterilize or not to sterilize"

This is a topic that has been debated before with many players arguing for or against it.

The main reason I sterilize is not for the water, but for the polluted dirt that drops from the water sieve.  When dupes handle the polluted dirt they will transfer germs to anything else they touch so there is a risk of them transporting food.

It is possible to prevent this by managing your dupes to always wash hands after they handle the dirt but there is always a risk.

Also if you play the game with easy settings (strong immunity) then you won't have a problem anyways.

ah I see, I had not considered the dirt having germs. I normally play with weak immune systems, to make the germs a bigger issue (even on weak, germs are not really that big a deal unless you go wild in the swamp biome or something). I was asking about this because I was planning on trying a "miserable" immune system run.

Thanks for your input!

At highest difficulty it's better to not risk it and clean water (food poisoning is very easy to develop). At any other difficulty I found that washing hands should be good enough to keep your dupes safe. Just make sure that they don't skip it (klei, come on, make so dupes can't skip busy hand washers!).

Also if you don't sterilize water, don't make food in a musher. And coffee. And cooler. Well, it supposed to be obvious.

I agree it's not very dangerous, but if your main source of germy water is a bathroom septic tank, it's ridiculously easy to disinfect it. Everyone uses an aquatuner to cool something, and most use PW to cool the aquatuner. Just dump the germy water there. I've forgotten the temp, but it's fairly low, I think around 140F the germs start dying. They're gone long before you need to send the PW to the sieve.

On max difficulty immunity only goes down and doesn't go up on it's own without vitamin chews. So every germ is just a countdown until the dupes get sick lol.

Much more fun way to play as you actually have to put some thought into that aspect of the game. On every other difficulty you don't have to worry about germs because you can just take the low immunity dupes out of high risk areas and swap them around with high immunity dupes. And they will heal on their own.

Wasn't it tested and the Espresso Machine DOES NOT transfer Food Poisoning?  I know the Water Cooler DOES transfer.

I certainly had food poisoning from drinking coffee at least once (not water cooler in the base, and food itself was impossible to get it from)

I've never experienced the coffee or watercooler one, and I have both in my base taking in germ water

It depents. If your dupes are in perfect health, they can handel a sip of coffee or water with germs. But if you have a dupe with biohazardous trait, or dupes with general poor imune-system, they will get sick from it.
