Maxwell wanted some of that knowledge or their nightmare fuel to make his own chess beasts and the giant animated shadow we saw, and teamed up with them. I'm not sure if Maxwell was the one who gave them the fuel but since the way Maxwell speaks about the issue they seem to be above him, my guess is someone higher up gave them the fuel. Just what is thulecite? Spoiler If the ancients underwent some "sort of thing", presumably becoming shadow monsters. (or are they even becoming shadows, or being used to like "hatch" them or something) Has Charlie undergone something similar? Just why, does Maxwell say: "I know why you led me back here." "But it won't work." Does she want Maxwell to undergo it? It seems like some answers are being given, but in it's place more questions!?!?!
