Should i buy Don't Starve Alone?

Recommended Posts

I would wait until a sale then buy it with shipwrecked because that is the only big difference with ds and dst.

Or if you have enough money I would recommend getting a pack of other games with it?

But option one is the better choice if you want it

There are enough differences and quality of life improvements in the original to warrant a purchase, at least when it's on sale. You can actually pause, it's balanced for singleplayer (which I guess you can kind of achieve using mods in DST, but it's a lot more clunky to do), and most importantly, there's the Shipwrecked DLC. So if it's on sale, I say get it.

Hi,

i just bought DST a week ago and i never played the original game (Don't Starve Alone). Is it worth to buy to original if i want to play solo or it's the same game?

Yes as fan has stated there are enough differences for them to have there own merits as some characters play very differently then their DST counterparts as well as the Shipwreck DLC that adds a new world and 4 chars that are not in DST as well as having no lag not having balancing issues and having caves always just know that because DST is technically a sequal content in DST is not going to be in DS such as hoilday events, skins or any updates that added mobs in DST and will probably not get added into DS as it is a finished product

I'd say yes...although I would normally advise people to do these the OTHER way around!  (Play normal Don't Starve first to get used to the world and mechanics, _then_ leap into the more-complicated Together, that is.)  But hey!  If Together made you intrigued enough to want to try out the original, then that's a good thing.  :)

Also regular Don't Starve offers you an option other things with expansion packs/DLC need to have--the ability to _have_ the DLC, but not always _play_ with it.  Such a cool idea, and I can't recall seeing it many other places.  That means, you can still, to this day, try out the original vanilla Don't Starve--without having to uninstall your Reign of Giants and/or Shipwrecked.  With most other games this kind of thing would be a total hassle--Don't Starve?  Does it with just two cute little checkboxes.  Harken back to the days when "summer" simply meant "it's not snowing". Remember the old days gone by, when leaving food on a crockpot kept it magically fresh forever!  Ah, the days when fire hounds or lightning only set your crops/plants on fire instead of EVERYTHING, and rain bothered nobody except WX-78...

P.S.   Watch out for Adventure Mode; it's EVIL.

(well at least for me, 'cos I kinda suck.  : P  Also I can't really say I was there "in the day", since when I started on Don't Starve, Reign of Giants had been out for quite a while and Shipwrecked was most of the way through its beta.  I did PLAY vanilla for a while before installing RoG, though...)

I bought both back in October sales and I never played the solo version. I created a world and played five minutes because it felt different to DST. I play DST alone all the time with a mod to adjust enemies HP for single player, because I'm still learning :v

No??? Have you tried Shipwrecked? You should! Because it's so different...

But seriously, I still play the solo version and I think it really worth it. Shipwrecked is just fantasting, the music, the athmosphere, .... I like it a lot.

I can understand if you don't like it, we're not all the same, but in your place I would give it a try. It's definitely more difficult as DS or RoG (or is for me, at least).

@FRiiiNK, I would recomment to buy singleplayer too (during a sale is the best, as already mentioned), because it's different from DST in many cases, easier to learn (as to my opinion), has Shipwrecked and has Adventure mode.

The fact that I can only use Wilson at start makes it very hard for me to get into it. And all the things you can do in DST and the new content we get all the time. I really would like to try Shipwrecked, but when you see DST before, DS feels so bad without characters and the rest of the things :(

If you really don't feel like playing Wilson there are console commands you can use to unlock the other characters. But yes, I would get Don't Starve if you want to enjoy the game alone. it's a different feel. Don't Starve together is putting a really big emphasis on farming and luxury which is something that was very very uncommon in Don't Starve. The game plays differently and there's a whole story mode in it you can play and discover. I'd say it's worth it.

It feels soulless compared to DST, by that, I'm trying to convey that it has less content and Shipwrecked DLC isn't an entire dynamic overhaul to RoG, not to mention all the players that now aren't in DS.

Multiplayer experience completes the don't starve experience, I don't suggest DS, unless your friends barely come online or want to feel a little bit more in control.

I dunno...I think the whole other feel regular Don't Starve has, has its own value, in its own way...maybe that's my introversion talking, but I do like the feeling that I can ACTUALLY PAUSE when I look at the map, and that I can shut down _any time I want_ without announcing it and making sure it's okay by everybody else.  And the original feel of the game _was_ supposed to be isolation and loneliness...

Also:  The original Don't Starve is a bit more hardcore, and more truly the "uncompromising" in the title:  It's a semi-roguelike. That means, when you die and have no touchstones or life-giving amulets, THAT'S IT.  DONE.  Finito.  No more world.  No countdown, no other players able to res you, no ghost state, no telltale hearts...no. rollbacks.  I'm saying this more as information than as a reccommendation; if you have only ever played Together it CAN be kind of a shock.

Me, I played that version first and was happy to see a roguelike that actually felt _satisfying_, like, I didn't lose EVERYthing when I died.  I learned stuff, stuff that could stay in my brain and MEAN something next time!  Take THAT, Nethack!  (Seriously, all the other roguelikes I've tried have just been SO reset-y, it felt completely pointless.  If you die, the world resets, you lose all your levels and stuff, okay, with you so far...but _the books and potions and staves all reset what they do_ so I can't even take notes and LEARN anything for next time? WHAT?!  Don't Starve was a breath of fresh air, as it was _finally_ what I'd been looking for--a permadeath game that you can actively get better at.  It's a _steep_ slope, yes...but one that DOES allow you to make base-camps on the way up.  I think this metaphor got away from me.)

So it was good for ME as a..._feel_ of game I already wanted.  Not for everybody, though, I know that.  And I LIKE unlocking the characters!  It's another thing that gives you a feeling of progress, of _doing_ something--I know WHY Together has everybody available already, but it does feel a little cheaty.  Just keep playing and over time, you'll get most of them naturally from experience points.  Except Maxwell.  And Wes. (I'm not at all unhappy that DST allows me to play THOSE; Adventure Mode kinda throws me into a pit of despair.)  And Wilbur.  And Woodlegs...

If nothing else Shipwrecked will almost make it worth it, as it IS in fact a whole lot more content that _Together Doesn't have_.  New biomes, music, atmosphere, mechanics...water that's _actually water_ instead of a wall, what a concept!  Water that you can _sail on_!  Water and wind that can temporarily change coastlines and blow things away!  New crops!  New shelters!  A cool new fireplace!  New characters!  COFFEE!  And a freaking _volcano_ to explore.  If didn't suck at it so bad I'd totally play it more.

Having said all that, though, when I got regular Don't Starve it was during a Steam sale and it was WAY cheaper.  Like whoah.  If you're not sure, wait for one of those.  :)

Or...wait for that Shipwrecked-y mod that's being made for DST by people from right here, on this board, to be finished.  It's going to add sailing and islands, and it sounds AWESOME.  I'm totally looking forward to it.  :DYou know?  I've always kinda wished that Shipwrecked and "the mainland" could be part of the SAME map.  My dream is _still_ to tame beefalo in a big savannah and then sail away into the islands.  That probably can't ever happen though.

I cheated to get Wes and his still my favorite though getting Wilbur is basically doing Where waldo but the entire ocean is the board very annoying if you actually sure for him Got to love woodlegs though a treasure hunt mixed with a boss fight so you can say

YO HO I'M A PIRTATE TITTLE LEE DEE

Well that would depend, how do you like to spend your money, what do you want, and how much do you want it. I would say, since it's only been a week for you, just continue playing multilayer for now and maybe wait for a sale like the others said.

Here's some pros and cons for Don't Starve.

       PROS     |      CONS

• Adventure Mode (a challenge AND a story!) |   • Reign of Giants costs money, but is free in DST

• Shipwrecked ( A whole new woooorld!)    |   • Shipwrecked costs money

• No delay when entering caves                  |   • You can't farm gems from the Dragonfly

• 3 caves per world                                      |     (unless a mod is made)

• Ruins are separate from caves                 |

• Things in DST have already been             |

modded into DS (Bee queen, Toadstool.)    |

• Willow isn't nerfed                                      |

Bigfoot                                                        |

Leave your world to start a new one            |

There are mods for being able to pause the game and scaling down the hp of the mobs if you want to play alone in Don't Starve Together, though I can't quite remember if you get a caves server when you make a free server to play alone in. ( and I'm too lazy to check. )

For $16.99 Canadian you just get vanilla Don't Starve. If you want RoG in it like Don't Starve Together has, you have to buy the DLC. I think you should sink some more hours into Together to make sure you really like it first, then when it starts to get stale or easy, or maybe if you just can't resist that beautiful looking Shipwrecked, then go for it! :D So long as you don't get buyer's remorse.

Or, if on second thought you don't want Don't Starve, if you like survival games, then for $16.99 or less you could get Starbound, or Terraria. Personally I'm waiting for Klei's Oxygen not Included to come out. The duplicates are just soooooo adorable <3 I want them to prosper and live happily.

Hp scaling mod: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=572590296&searchtext=single+player+

Pausing mod: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=758532836&searchtext=pause+

Yeah, there's a bunch of mods that can bring _some_ stuff from Together to regular Don't Starve (although so far, not the really BASIC, quality-of-life changes I'm the most interested in*)--toadstool, pets, meteors...and mods that can bring some of the better parts of singleplayer to Together (non-breaking thermal stones, Willow the Unnerfed, the Teleportato and its parts...kinda...)  And I've got the scaling mod for Together myself.

However, when I got singleplayer it was during the Steam Summer Sale, and I think the WHOLE thing was like maybe 15 bucks.  13, maybe? 15 at the most, anyway.  Don't know when the next big Steam sale is going to be, but keep an eye out.

*In case you're wondering what those are, it's the same ones I keep ranting on about all the time.  I won't bore you with it again here.

Just play Don't Starve Together on a locked server. The only thing you could get for playing don't starve is the extension, but it is just not worth it compared to all the content that was being added to DST (of course there are other small differences, but meh, more content is better).

There is currently 0 point playing the solo game in my opinion.

After you feel like you've exhausted DST's content then you should definitely buy DS. Shipwrecked adds a TON of new content (I can barely play DST because it doesn't have SW, I need my dripple pipes and coffee dang it!), and the game is built more around spending lots of time on one save file, unlike in DST where the game is actively trying to stop you from playing one file for a long time (mini glaciers never disappear, the wooden thing is gone so you're stuck in one world forever, disease comes to screw you over for daring to put plants in your base, you'll eventually run out of ruins gear since you only have one ruins without using the console... I could go on but I think you get the point.).
