Charlie (Presumably) Has Hidden Dialogue in Speech Files

Recommended Posts

I apologize if this has already been talked about; I could find this anywhere on the forums, so let me know if this is just old news.

     I stumbled across these when looking through the dialogue for various characters in the directory \common\Don't Starve Together\data\scripts. I was curious as to what the characters say when they see another version of themselves and decided to take a look, which eventually lead me to speech_waxwell. This was what I found inside the file when he addresses himself.

Spoiler

WAXWELL =
        {
            GENERIC = "What a dapper fellow!",
            --Pride... Arrogance... Conceit...
            ATTACKER = "I know that look, %s. What are you up to?",
            MURDERER = "Old habits die hard... and so will you!",
            REVIVER = "Trust only yourself, hey %s?",
            GHOST = "I'll have to pay in blood to bring you back, %s.",
            FIRESTARTER = "Do not blow this for us, %s.",
        },

     Well, evidently I found something pretty interesting. I ended up looking through the rest of it to see if there was anything else like this, although it was a bit narrow. I searched for the key words Maxwell and Waxwell, specifically. Even more of this dialogue came up.

Spoiler

STATUEMAXWELL = "It seems silly now...",
        --Your hubris... Maxy... it was always your weakness...

TRAP_TEETH_MAXWELL = "I'm... sure I had my reasons when I placed this.",
        --...

MAXWELL = "Looking good!",
        --This was your fault...
        MAXWELLHEAD = "Hey, handsome.",
        --You did this...
        MAXWELLLIGHT = "Aw, it remembers me.",
        --You...
        MAXWELLLOCK = "It keeps the master in the chair.",
        --You...
        MAXWELLTHRONE = "It's less painful than it looks. Barely.",
        --You haven't escaped its pull...

     This was made even more jarring by the importance of what's being said here. The last line, specifically. It got me thinking about what it means for Charlie to be speaking within the text file, since it never actually appears in-game, and what me reading it means canonically. I don't know what any of this could change lore-wise. Perhaps the whole "throne" and "world" is actually a clever representation of creating a game, but that's just a guess. Who knows, maybe it's actually nome speaking.

Any of you have an idea for what all of this means?

Always wondered what those commented lines are for. When did they appear in Maxwell's speech file, were they only added around the announcement of A New Reign? Also, "Maxy" reminds me of this: http://www.dontstarvegame.com/science/mdocs/6/images/hey-maxy.jpg

Pretty clear that it's supposed to be Charlie to me, and apparently she condemns Maxwell.

I also found these lines and been excited for a long time. The only thing I'm almost sure about is that these are related the New Reign.

These quotes (?) sound like if Charlie blames Maxwell for getting into this terrible world, furthermore... maybe wants to take revenge? There's one more line int the file that you might have overseen:

Spoiler

MULTIPLAYER_PORTAL = "Always did have a flair for the dramatic...",
--...Make your jokes...I'll be seeing you soon...

It really sounds like Charlie has a fixed plan. Not sure if mainly against Maxwell or against all the surviors, but if I think of all the (yet useless) staff that we have: the queenly and kingly sculpture, the fossil-sceleton (could it be only for decoration? I doubt... (at least I hope not)), the shadow atrium... I don't know what will await us in the last update, but that won't be small, I'm sure.

     Now I'm just wondering if the staff actually has this planned out, or if it's still being planned. I'm still wondering what the implications are of the text being hidden away in speech files, since we're not actually supposed to see it. Maybe I'm thinking too much about this.

it was revealed in dst's release puzzle where it was added alongside dst maxwell.

OBJECTION!

They know us. Pesky fussy fans looking where we're not needed. OF COURSE they put it there for a reason! :twisted:

Not to mention I can't ever hear/read the phrase "Be seeing you!" and not think of The Prisoner/Babylon 5... (evil laugh)

Ooh, speaking of crazy parallell theories...isolated island...everything is against you...everything is surreal and fake...no way out...creepy shadowy people in charge in the background but it might all actually be ABOUT you instead...?

(Do not highlight that unless you want spoilers for the end of "The Prisoner".  It's from the '60s, but it's still good and not everyone has seen it yet.)

Huh.

And yes, of course those lines are intended for us to find, or at least they don't _mind_ if we do.  The "voice" talking back to Maxwell has always sounded so like, low...dark...angry...whispery in my mind.  (I can do the voice I'm talking about out loud but not in text.)  I've always taken it as either Charlie, or perhaps Maxwell's conscience lashing out at himself.  "Ha ha, I'm laughing about this, I can be cheerful now" (what have I done...)

...Notorious

And I love the little bits of backstory you sometimes get from these quotes--most often with Maxwell, it would seem (sometimes with others too).  In this case, he and Charlie once spent Christmas together?  brought each other presents?  had a holiday dinner together?  Something like that.  It sounds like there were at least a few _years_ they knew each other during Christmas time, because the "My favourite" bit to me seems like he's sentimental because Charlie remembered a _tradition_, but that could just be me.

Now I'm imagining the two of them at a fancy Christmas party in 1900's clothes, sipping eggnog out of oldschool champagne glasses, and it's just such a cool image.  Too bad tragedy was about to strike...

So is she just taking pity since it's Christmas? Or just a bit crazy?

She suffers from a severe personality split.

Looks like she really likes christmas and can even go back to her previous, good ol' times state.

It's laced with laxatives

Apparently Maxwell was looking for a assistant in 1905, so they only spent one year together Which is a shame but oh well.

Well, I knew I was gonna mess it up somehow if I didn't look it up first.  : P  Ah well.  Maybe eggnog was a memorable favourite because not many people* actually like it?  yes?  no?  okayi'llshowmyselfout.

*In my experience, anyway.  Heh.
